This Month's Stiff: Hans Christian Oersted

Entered Mortal Coil: 14 August 1777

Assumed Room Temperature: 9 March 1851

“Big Compass Needle, Ain't it?”

The fundamental relationship between magnetism and electricity is sometimes taken for granted. The steps to electrical understanding were incremental. Our current state of electronic technology is built upon the shoulders of many men---yes, men. If someone can find me a dudette who was instrumental in the history of electricity or electronics, I would gladly write a short treatise on the lass. Note, however, that the young lady (or ladies) who kept Ben Franklin or Marconi company, for instance, would not count in this context. Merely assisting the great mind in his work is not proof enough. So now that we've ruffled a few liberated feathers by being blatantly sexist in this opening paragraph, lets get on to the business of telling you kind readers a little about Hans.

Hans was born on the Island of Langeland. His father, Soren Christian, was a pharmacist. The old man was fairly well to do, apparently, and had the funds necessary to send young Hans and his brother Anders to Copenhagen in 1793 in order to take an entrance examination for the university. Both passed. In deference and in honor of his father, Hans took up the study of pharmacology. By 1800, with pharmacology degree in hand and a thorough understanding of drugs in his mind, Hans turned his energies to the new science of electricity. If there was ever a more dramatic change in interests, this particular instance fits the bill! He dabbled with it off and on for the better part of 20 years, and in the process made quite a name for himself in learned circles for other endeavors. So industrious was Hans that he was appointed Secretary to the Royal Danish Academy of Sciences and Letters in 1815.

The experiment that put Oersted's name in the history books was fiendishly simple by today's standards, and can be reproduced with ease. Scientists of the era had an inkling that electricity and magnetism were inexorably linked together, but no one had devised a means to prove the hypothesis. Actually, Hans' discovery was serendipitous, as he was playing around with electrical currents in the laboratory by using a Voltaic Pile (remember Mr. Volta, (http://www.eham.net/articles/7252?), when he noticed that a nearby compass needle deflected. He repeated the exercise, and noted a compass needle deflection each time. By reversing the current direction, the compass needle would deflect in the opposite direction. Hans also noted that no deflection took place when the wire was held at approximately right angles to the needle.

0x01 graphic

Oersted's Experiment

It was left to the work of Ampere ( http://www.eham.net/articles/8857 ) and other scientists to quantify the relationship between electrical current and magnetism mathematically. In his honor, the CGS unit of magnetic field strength, the Oersted, denoted by the symbol Oe, was named after him.

Short and sweet…..Coulomb is next!

Feelip:

Awepost post, dude. Hopefully, no one will be polarized by it...I had to go back and reread it, as I initially thought it said that he was born on the Isle of Langerhans, which is of course the largest exporter of insulin in the world, pancreatically speaking. Perhaps if Benny Hill were still alive, he would have said “he was born in a small village, just outside of wedlock.” In any event, well done on DED #17; the entire series should be required reading for anyone with even half a wit. And before the other guy says otherwise, yes, he was indeed a dude!

"Instead of this, why not try that Oersted?"

"You thought you got the better of him, but only brought out the Oersted."

Dear Phil KA4KOE,

A problem with sexism in science history is that it not only is oppressive to half the human population, but it infects the objectivive reporting of that history. You didn't ruffle my feathers, but you did betrayed an ignorance of your subject.

Take the case of Laura Bassi, Professor of Science at the University of Bologna. Never heard of her?

Laura Bassi 1711-1778

Bassi was the first female professor of physics and was among the first scholars to bring Newtonian physics to Italy. Her interests covered all areas of physics, including electricity. She duplicated some of Ben Franklin's experiments and built the first electricity lab at the University of Bologna. She experimented on the medical uses of electricity.

During her lifetime, she was admired for her scholarship and achievements, as well as her charity to the poor.

She was a bright star guiding scientists and scholars to the university. "No scholar would pass through Bologna without being eager for her learned converstion," writes one biographer. From a private letter, we learn that Jean Antoine Nollet wanted the chance to use her electrical laboratory. It is truly amazing that Bassi should be doing experiments on electricity equipped with her own laboratory! Electrical experiments were dangerous. More than a few scientists electrocuted themselves with Leyden jars (that acted as giant capacitors) and experiments with kites.

Bassi collaborated with her husband on the medical uses of electricity. Galvani and Volta followed them at Bologna studying the electric nature of neuro-physiology. Bassi duplicated some of the experiments of Ben Franklin, and installed the first lightning rod at the University. The Volta Library in Bologna, by the way, is on the street Via Bassi, named for her.

Well, Phil, here's a woman in electricity you could write about...but wait...I already did!

Thus ends the lesson.

73,

---* Dr. Ken Beck WI7B

Hmmmm, a thought!

In Southern California we had a radio program known as “The Poor Man & Dr. Drew”. I don’t believe this program was syndicated, so many here may be IGNORANT as to its content. I won’t elaborate at this time, because I suspect that a sufficient number of “6 lander’s” will remember this program and make comments of their own.

They fluxed all night at every conceivable angel and vector. Millie would occasionally lead, and at other times lag. Some comments from a Dane
by SMHAM on April 17, 2005 Mail this to a friend!
Hans Christian Ørsted was born in the city of Rudkøbing on the Island of Langeland on August 14, 1777. Hi died in Copenhagen March 9, 1851 and is buried in the Assistens Cementary, Copenhagen. There is a statue over him in the Örsted Park, Copenhagen: http://www.assistens.dk/orststat.jpg

He became assistant Professor in Physics at Copenhagen University 1806 and Professor 1817. In 1822 he went on a journey after his discovery. During that journey Davy and Faraday expressed their appreciation of his work.

In 1824 he discovered a method to produce pure aluminium.

In 1827 Ørsted suggested that a Polytechnic Institute should be founded in Copenhagen. In 1829 Denmark's Polytechnical Institute was founded. It is the foremost technical university in Denmark to this day:
http://www.dtu.dk/index_e.htm

Denmark's first satellite was namned after Ørsted. It is a research satellite which studies the earth's magnetic field (what else?).

A research institute is named after Ørsted, the H.C. Ørsted institute.

1 ørsted = 79,6775 Ampere/meter

Many of Ørsted's instruments can be found at the Technical Museum of Helsingør, north of Copenhagen.

The world famous story teller Hans Christian Andersen is celebrated this year since it is 200 years since he was born. Notably, he had the same first name as Ørsted. Andersen called Ørsted "the big Hans Christian" and himself "the small Hans Christian". Both of them should however become two of the very few Danes known to a whole world. Ørsted is mentioned in some of H C Andersen's works and they know eachother well.

Well, I think that Ham radio needs Great Ham’s! I haven’t seen any lately, have you?

I used to know a guy that always seemed to be doing things. He was building new antenna designs, or testing theories about Quad’s vs. Yagi’s, or doing realistic empiric tests to resolve optimum HF gain and launch angles, or at least exhibiting a proliferation ‘Super Score’ single op contesting. Now he runs about with two or three friends in ‘Rover vehicles’ sort of pre-fabbed to contest against himself.

John Kraus is gone, and there sure aren’t any Armstrong’s or Farnsworth’s bopping about! It seems to be the latest epitome to have “3800 Q’s” at a go on 20 Meters etc as the mark of a good Ham. Personally I enjoy having one “Q” for an hour or two with some other Ham that has worked to build or understand some of the things that I enjoy. I’m running out of such Ham’s!

Now I realize that the ‘holy C’ is steeped in tradition, and that they went to a lot of trouble to install this special chimney etc but, do you think that maybe somebody could just have sent an e-mail?

It would make a great advertisement for Apple etc. We see a couple of cardinals running to the smoke stove and struggling to get the fire lit, as another cardinal merely flips open his notebook computer.

Well, the last time I was down that way, they didn't want to let me go before I helped with 'the powers that be'. Be glad you have lights!

Besides, pollen does not bother me! Don't tell Caity but, I love nature in the woods!

Hey I just dropped an e-mail to this guy Nordell, so maybe he will join our little conclave? He does like Ayn Rand, so he will at least talk to JGALT but, he also likes Thorsten Veblen, so maybe he will only talk to Caity. He will probably want her to trade in that beige Volvo for a beige Yugo, maybe just get a bicycle. Na, that won’t work either! I remember that former California Governor Jerry Brown said that the microscopic bits of rubber from bicycle tires contribute to major pollution!

BFH sed, "Besides, pollen does not bother me! Don't tell Caity but, I love nature in the woods!"

Now is the time to be here! Grab your Manpack Radio
and join Feee lep in the jungles of Chatham County
and have a CQ WAPS* contest.

* WAPS ~ Worked All Pollen Snorters. Just remember that it takes all snorts to make a world! :-)

You just gave me an idea for a cute Ham product! How about a backpack, where its frame rack has mounting positions for two or three 7Ah gel cells. This frame would also support a mounting for a center loadeded whip that would work from 70 cm, down to 160 Meters, and the front bib portion of the pack would hold an FT-100D or IC-706 etc.

There could be enough additional room it backpack to hold a couple of water bottles, trail mix, twigs and bark (ever eat a tree, some parts are edible) etc.

Probably even with the batteries and water, it would be lighter than Feeeleeeep's radio -- and be available for QRO hiking!

Who is Nordell?

Feeling better today. The bride ain't. Lots o' pollen still in Savannah.

Nordell writes the web page that JGALT posted in a reply a while back.

http://www.working-minds.com/WM2002a.htm

He seems to have rather mixed messages. He likes Rand, who was by her own description, an "Objectivist". He also writes about Veblen, who was a communist, and his article about Electro Magnetic Radiation is just flat wrong (from a scientific objectivist viewpoint)!

Don't you guys eat that red clay mud in the south for better health etc?

I particularly liked the misstatement about "electromagnetic radiation did not exist before Marconi" or something or other. That's truly an absurd statement if there was ever one.

Never heard of light quanta being EM, I suppose. I guess before Marconi, lightning didn't emit RF bursts throughout the spectrum.

Funny. I needed a good hearty laugh today.

Well, it has been a couple of years since he wrote the article, so I asked him if he has learned any physics since then. If he responds it might be interesting. At the least if he tries to engage some folks who understand RF, he will never become constipated again!

Speaking of such things, you never answered about the mud?
