Mir to be permanently manned:

AMSAT News Service reports that MirCorp's board of directors recently approved a permanently manned operation of the Russian Mir space station beginning next year.

The announcement signaled a major milestone in the company's plan to use the unique facility as the world's first commercial orbital space station. A schedule of privately financed MirCorp flights begins with the launch of an unmanned resupply spacecraft to Mir this fall, followed by two long-duration missions with cosmonauts in 2001.

The implications for Amateur Radio operation from the station remain unclear.

Jeeze, when will somebody do the right thing and give that old peice a space junk a proper burial and let it burn?
Do they have to wait until it finally kills somebody?

Well, Russia is hurting badly for space program money. Mircorp will keep Mir alive in an effort to make money which is much needed for them to continue to stay in the space business, i.e. keep their parts of the ISS coming. Without Mir I believe they are very in deep trouble. So they won't give it up if it keeps getting "customers" at $20 million a pop. If Mir suffers another serious problem they'll have an even harder time finding "customers". If I had $20 million to blow I'd go in a minute....

Hi, well your key word is 'blow', not as in a million, but as 'into space'. I think the thing which was planned to live only 5 years is extremely long in the tooth and is planning to bite again soon. It's currently not even air tight remember. Pesky leaks.... And it was built during the good old USSR days where quality was job one!
