3 Ham Radio Emergency Communications (Katrina) News Stories (8 Sept):
Editor's Note: Due to the sheer volume of news stories relating to Ham Radio's role in emergency communications in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina I am placing all of the (daily) news stories on this topic into a single news story. I will be adding these multiple stories in each day as they come out. This will keep our News section of eHam from being a several pages long in just a few days, while still providing our readers with just as many ham-radio-related news stories on the subject as possible. As always, simply click the "LINK" below the titles to bring up the story in a new browser window.

While hams have always been the one reliable means of communication in disasters, perhaps this incident will help to educate the public to our service. It might even help educate some on this board!

It's been a good year for ham radio. Dayton attendance was up, CW smoked SMS on Leno, and the ARRL is looking better than FEMA. The good press hopefully will translate into renewed interest and a protection for amateurs.
Personally I am glad to see this press after having an opportunity to help out here locally this past week in Louisiana. There are lots of impressions to get. Passing a message to a loved one that their family is safe, while at the same time getting no answers or constant dead ends in search of another. Every ham ought to do a little public service atleast once just to know how they can lend a hand when disaster finds them...or atleast to know what to expect. Think of it as playing field day for a week.
