10 Ham Radio Emergency Communications (Katrina) News Stories (9 Sept):
Editor's Note: Due to the sheer volume of news stories relating to Ham Radio's role in emergency communications in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina I am placing all of the (daily) news stories on this topic into a single news story. I will be adding these multiple stories in each day as they come out. This will keep our News section of eHam from being a several pages long in just a few days, while still providing our readers with just as many ham-radio-related news stories on the subject as possible. As always, simply click the "LINK" below the titles to bring up the story in a new browser window.

If hams are doing such a great job then why is SATERN pleading for ham support and the RED CROSS is saying that they over-estimated ham turnout by 60-2 man teams...that means that there are open oppurtunity for over 120 hams to help the Red Cross alone -- yet no one is answering the call...
oh -- but there sure does seem to be allot of stories coming out of CT and ARRL about hams saving the day...
maybe someone should tell SATERN and the RED CROSS to be quiet....
to me it sounds like we are great at complaining that no one takes our hobby -- opps I mean the Amateur radio service - seriously -- yet when we are called upon to help we just look the other way ... perhaps this will be the event that finally makes us realize that us ham radio hobby folks are no longer a service but just a hobby that likes to complain ...
If you ever thought of a reason why they should do away with the code requirement then Katrina answered that calling....
SATERN and Red Cross can't find any HF operators to go to the area and help -- too bad there is a pool of 700000 UHF/VHF only guys they can't draw from...

Hmmm, does anyone else see the irony in that statement? Talk about calling the kettle black.

Uh, I think that must have been mistyped. Katrina dealt a very serious blow to those who are saying code is obsolete and of no use anymore.

This is a PERFECT time for the HF guys to have the VHF UHF guys over and show them that there is another segment of ham radio that helps with disasters and emergencies. Show them, help them, elmer them to become interested in the art of HF operation, rather than turn this into another turf war. We are ALL hams, no matter what your license class. I don't get on HF much right now, but I did pass traffic into the area. I was treated wtih respect and helped through the process. No one asked my license class when I checked in, no one asked what level of code I passed to get my license. It seems that it doesn't really matter when there is work to be done.
