Connecticut Native is ARRL's New Membership Manager:

Sarah Dorsey, a native of West Hartford, Connecticut, is the ARRL's new--and first--Membership Manager. She officially assumed her duties at ARRL Headquarters October 5. Her primary focus will be on developing membership recruitment and retention strategies to increase membership growth. She'll also support member and customer service. While not yet a radio amateur, Dorsey says she's "absolutely" looking forward to the challenge of her new responsibilities, and a ham radio licensing class is on her short list.

"I enjoy work that is personally meaningful," she said. "I've been fascinated with learning about ham radio operators and the crucial role they played and continue to perform in the rescue and recovery efforts for Katrina and Rita. I look forward to the day when I'll also be able to work side by side with our members."

Dorsey attended Green Mountain College in Vermont and is a graduate of Charter Oak College in Connecticut. Prior to coming to the League, she served as recruitment marketing manager for a non-profit health care services organization in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she managed recruitment and retention initiatives. Her professional background also includes management, marketing and recruitment positions in various disciplines of the healthcare and human services markets. Dorsey says she's now ready for a new challenge that requires essentially the same skill set.

ARRL COO Harold Kramer, WJ1B, anticipates that Dorsey's past experience will fold right into the League's goal of boosting membership and retaining current members. "More important, we look forward to her providing even more value and benefits to being an ARRL member," Kramer said. "Sarah will become a very visible part of the ARRL team at hamfests and conventions, and she is looking forward to meeting many of our members and prospective members."

ARRL Sales and Marketing Manager Dennis Motschenbacher, K7BV, earlier this year announced the search for a Membership Manager to target membership recruitment and retention. He says having Dorsey on board in that role is part of an overall strategy to "look beyond many of the League's current organizational paradigms regarding membership."

Dorsey recalled occasionally driving past the Maxim Memorial Station W1AW building while growing up in the Greater Hartford area. "That little brick building is definitely a landmark," she remarked, adding that she never anticipated one day working on behalf of Amateur Radio at ARRL Headquarters. "Now everywhere I go, I'm starting to notice antennas!"

One has to wonder how high a salary she was offered to walk away from the healthcare industry? Since she is not a ham, she had no 'calling' to serve the hobby, like so many other ARRL employees claim as their reason for working there. Perhaps she will feel like she never left the healthcare industry because of the majority of 60+ year old 'members' she will be dealing with.

What is it now, 125 paid employees? Not-for-profit?

Jeeves...

Not worth a comment. Now for a lighter note, check out the new cq website. www.cq-amateur-radio.com Cq is all about amateur radio and there's great books on just about every subject pertaining to the hobby on their website. Check it out, it puts qst to shame. Or maybe its the league that has put qst and themselves to shame, oh well i just could'nt resist. Anyway put your money in a damn good ham magazine instead of wasting it on a dead promise from the past.

Hmmmm the league hires a woman whos not even a ham to scare up some new membership? This tells me that the league is in trouble! I guess desperate times call for desperate measures. Perhaps if they actually bothered to listen to the ham community (members and nonmembers) instead of dictating to them, they wouldnt have members jumping ship in the first place! It appears to me that their last giveaway proposal was more damaging to them than first thought. Instead of letting a handful of arrogant directors call the shots, why dont they just let the membership vote on key issues like the last proposal they just rammed through? I think its only fair that anyone who pays money to belong to such an organization at least has a say so in what goes on, instead of being dictated to by the almighty gods up in Conn. with dollar signs in their eyes. Of course the league supporters will cry and whine about my post and I dont care, Im not going to waste time arguing with blind idiots. I call it like I see it. The league is selling ham radio out in favor of its own survival and making a buck. If they actually cared about the time honored traditions of ham radio, why are they so intent on lobbying the FCC for giveaway tests and hiring new people to recruit members? One word...money.

Poor Sarah.
Since she is not a ham, she may have no idea how much ARRL is despised by the ham community or WHY membership in ARRL is down around 20 some percent of licensed hams.

She has been given an impossible task, I feel sorry for her.

Answers:
1) It would not be the Newington Boys Club;
2) It would not be the private fifetum of a few;
3) That would make ARRL responsive to the membership;
4) Your average ham is too stupid to know anything; or
5) ALL of the above.
