A recent reply to my ad stated it was from a ham, gave his callsign & name & city. Then stated he was away from home, but wanted the gear shipped o/seas. First flag! I called the ham's home & his wife said he was at work. She didn't sound foreign like the sender claimed either. So they're getting smarter & trying to lure you via legimate callsigns & names.

I had posted a WANTED ad for a parts IC-735 a few months ago. I received a one line reply from a "Thomas Nate" stating,"i have for sell...get back to me". That was the only thing in the email, well, except for Yahoo's little ad they place at the bottom of outgoing mails. Yes, it was a Yahoo account.
I already know this is a scam, but I decide to play along. I reply with, "How much?". It doesn't take long for him to reply with,"35 usd!shipp included!". Yes, too good to be true. He is obviously in a different country, seeing that he put 'usd' after the price. It would cost about $35.00 or more to ship the radio over here. I continue on. :) I ask him, "Are you willing to deal with an escrow service?" and he promptly replies,"for 35 usd?..no!" lol
I want to see how far this jackass will go, so I send him another email. "Actually, I would prefer C.O.D. shipping. I'm sure you can understand. If not, I appreciate the offer just the same." He replies with,"ok..i will let you know if we have a deal at the end of the day!"
I never did hear from Thomas Nate at thomasnate1960@yahoo.com with an IP Address of 82.78.202.41. :)

I don't get it -- WHERE'S THE SCAM???
Where did he want you to send it to that made you think it was a scam?
Did he ask you to send it first without payment? (then that would not have been a scam but mere stupidity on your part)
If he has a US callsign and answers the phone were you going to send it first without money????
Am I missing something here???

I agree with Dipole.
"Then stated he was away from home, but wanted the gear shipped o/seas. First flag!"
Maybe he was in the military or a business man on an extended trip and wanted to have the equipment at his location. Or maybe he was just the middleman -- buying it from you for 100 (for example) and selling it to someone else for 200 and just having you mail it directly to them instead of having to pay shipping both ways.
"I called the ham's home & his wife said he was at work."
If he gave you a real number then most probably its not a scam. Also if it was a scam wouldn't she have transfered you to his phone instead of telling you the truth?
"She didn't sound foreign like the sender claimed either."
I'm sorry that the wife didn't have an accent. Perhaps he married an American or perhaps she learned English in school. My boss is from Japan and speaks perfect English.
"So they're getting smarter & trying to lure you via legimate callsigns & names."
So how do you tell if its legitmate/fake vs legitimate/true callsign.
Sounds like you jumped to a conclusion that wasn't there.

They'll keep trying, and all we have to be is be DILIGENT, and just " think about it " I put stuff on a few differant E/sell-boards, and invariably I get an offer to buy it, The party seems to always say they are extremelyy interested in my item, and will contact their shipping agent to arrange shipping.. BUT they wish me to accept the deal immediatly, and ask me to accept a moeny order , or foriegn exchange escrow service , or whatever, all I need to do is mail forward to them the differance in the money. SO, they want to send me $2000.oo for a $100.oo item they offer to be generous and give me $50 for my trouble, but pleae send the money to an address , usually in the UK. and they try to tell me that by the end of the day their bank will have all the paper work processed to forward me the $2000.
BUT I must act now, DEPOSIT to their foreign account before some deadline time, oh, always its to help some poor family member continue her studies..
HELLO ! I want to SIGN UP YESTERDAY. Its amazing that the perps in these cases, actually believe that we in the west are that stupid...

So much for being brief! To clarify for those who doubt my veracity and intelligence;
1. Received 2 separate IDENTICAL msgs for 2 listed items!
2. The use of the term "shipping company" as in other scams! Mentioned the "market for this type equipment"!
3. Said he was in Spain at the time.
4. Email AD was yahoo.UK, not US or Spain!
NOTE: I didn't say he answered the phone..I said his wife answered and stated he was at work (in the US!!!!!) I know a southern accent when I hear it.
Read and think before you jump!!
Any questions please email me direct.

As we are all aware there are plenty of people doing scams, but i have to to point out that i have a GD callsign and operate in Florida and the UK depending on my work.
I will often ask for goods to be shipped to a overseas address because of my work, but in the same token i also ask UK hams to ship to the US.
The point is there are plenty of people working and living overseas and we are not all scammers.
The biggest scams that have been done on me are by ebay and paypal i have even had money taken out of my paypal account by a person in Boston.

Speaking of Pay-Pal and Ebay, I came to the conclusion that all Ebay sellers that only accept Pay-Pal and nothing else are scam artists from the outset.

It's amazing when an "American" bashes and "American" for trying to get word of a scammer out to help someone, used to be that Americans stood together...

"Speaking of Pay-Pal and Ebay, I came to the conclusion that all Ebay sellers that only accept Pay-Pal and nothing else are scam artists from the outset. "
I have done a little trading on e-bay both buying and selling. I have generally only accepted Pay-Pal because it is convienent and simple. I don't understand your comment and don't like being called a scam artist for selling my old gear and taking Pay-Pal.
