'Twas The Night Before BPL Ruling

Twas the night before ruling for the BPL op's,
not an F.C.C. Commissioner was stirring, not even Michael J Copps.

BPL licenses were hung by the chimney with care,
in hopes the F.C.C. would renew them this year.

ARRL execs were snug in their bed,
while visions of Ed Hare danced in their heads.

Our new no code band proposals were ready,
and the no code debate was again to become steady.

When on top of my antenna there rose such gyration,
it sounded like one hundred brass pounding stations!

The red lights on my tower illuminated the night,
when a blurry shadow came into my sight.

All of a sudden I saw something streaking above,

At first when I looked, I thought it was Dick Cheyney,

But no wait! It was a sleigh, 8 reindeer driven by Jim Haynie.

He shouted, “Now Winlink! CW! and ARRL, too!
On Sumner and Riley woohoo!”

To the top of my tower on this night they will ride,
knowing Marconi's magic is right by their side!

And then, with a twinkle, I heard nearby my home,
a BPL transmitter fire up and it melted my coaxial foam.

It sputtered and spewed then it did modulate,
as BPL just smiled as it pondered my fate.

With satellite, ipods and Internet, too,
I started to wonder how ham radio, AM and Sideband would do.

The BPL proponent was there, the choices quite many,
who in the future may have users aplenty?

I spoke not a word, I knew it's purpose was deemed,
and it started filling my neighborhood with new internet streams.

Then my radio went quiet and who was to know,

Suddenly, up my antenna tower I saw Ed Hare rose.

He sprang to Haynie's sleigh, with a smile of glee

They killed my BPL noise, how lucky for me.

To his ARRL team he gave a wink and a whistle,

So back to Newington they flew like the down of a thistle.

Happy Holidays

You have too much time on your hands. Maybe a dose of Ritalin will help!

Happy Holidays, and thanks for the chuckle, Chuck!

Maybe he does have too much time on his hands.....

That said, I stand in awe of someone who can come up with rhymes like this. I guess it is the Engineer in me that limits this spark of genius. We each have our areas that we shine. Alan, I think you have great expertise in mobile operation and amplifiers. Let each of us have a time where we can show off our talents.

Charles, just what kind of fish have you been feeding to your Star Seal? Alan is right! You have far too much time on your hands! Chill out, have a beer and chew on a few corn cobs with Granny.
Have a COOL YULE and a very FRANTIC FIRST!

PS. Give Darla a hug and a kiss for us. Be sure to duck quickly as she will probably slap the fire out you for allowing me to get fresh!!!

Maniacal laughter fading out as I sneak back to the

For any who missed the true and original "Night Before Christmas," unabridged and not dumbed down, it started out something like this:

"'Twas the nocturnal segment of the diurnal period preceding the
annual Yuletide celebration and throughout our place of residence,
kinetic activity was not in evidence among the possessors of this
potential, including that species of diminutive rodent known as
Mus musculus.

Hosiery was meticulously suspended from the forward edge of the
wood-burning caloric apparatus, pursuant to our anticipatory
pleasure regarding an imminent visitation from an eccentric
philanthropist among whose folkloric appellations is the honorific
title of St. Nick.

The prepubescent siblings, comfortably ensconced in their respective
accommodations of repose, were experiencing subconscious visual
hallucinations of variegated saccarinose fruit confections
performing choreography through their cerebrums. My conjugal
partner and I, attired in our nocturnal head-coverings, were about
to take slumberous advantage of the Arctic-like gloom when upon
the avenaceous exterior portion of the grounds there ascended such a
cacophony of dissonance that I felt compelled to arise with alacrity
from my place of repose for the purpose of ascertaining the precise
source thereof.

Hastening to the casement, I forthwith opened the barriers sealing
this fenestration, noting thereupon that the lunar brilliance without,
reflecting as it was upon the surface of a recent crystalline aqueous
precipitation, might be said to rival that of the solar meridian
itself--thus permitting my incredulous optical sensory organs to
behold a miniature airborne runnered conveyance, drawn by an octet
of diminutive specimens of the genus Rangifer, piloted by a miniscule,
aged chauffeur so ebullient and nimble that it became instantly apparent
to me that he was indeed our anticipated beatified caller.

With this ungulate motive power traveling at a greater vertiginous
velocity than patriotic alar predators, he vociferated loudly, expelled
breath musically through contracted labia, and addressed each of the
octet by his or her cognomen: "Now Dasher, now Dancer," et al, guiding
them to the uppermost exterior level of our abode, through which structure
I could readily distinguish the concatenations of each of the sum total
of the thirty-two cloven pedal extremities.

As I retracted my cranium from its erstwhile location and was performing
a pi radians pivot, our distinguished visitant achieved, with utmost
celerity, via a downward saltation, entry by way of the ceramic smoke
passage. He was clad entirely in animal integuments, soiled by the ebony
residue from partial oxidation of carboniferous fuels. His resemblance
to a street vendor I attributed to the plethora of assorted playthings
which he bore dorsally in a commodious cloth receptacle...."

Oh, it's really much longer!

Happy Holidays to all!

I don't know about being the poet laureate of ham radio or anything but it sure was a lot of fun writing it.

On another note, If I had the income I would personally send each and every one of you that new Icom radio you always wanted under your tree. But, since I can't do that I will do the next best thing.

I would like to take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you a personal holiday greeting and wish you happiness, good health and hopefully if the sunspot cycle cooperates, gud DX in the new year.

I would also like to thank many folks here at eHam for the hard work they do in maintaining these forums for us trolls who frequent here. Also, let us not forget Bill Fisher, W4AN in our thoughts this holiday season.

Now get the heck out of here and go grab yourself some holiday cheer and have yourself a great holiday.

My Best,

Can anbody out here answer this question for me???

If as "Geo. Bushie" and his lackies tout "All America" will have access to the "Information-Highway" why should the BPL carriers provide access to RURAL AREAS when we ALL know that it'll be the same ol'story about rural connectivity???

In OUR opinion, logically, "IT'S TOO DAMN EXPENSIVE!!!"

Either way "BPL" is NOT the nirvana that some of our elected and appointed officials made it out to be!!!

When are we going to TELL corporate Amerika "ENOUGH-IS-ENOUGH???"

Maybe if you lived in rural America, you might understand the story.

Im my opinion, you don't have a clue about the issues involved in rural access broadband, considering the hyperbole you spew time after time on the subject.

Nice Job and Merry Christmas all.

Now if some kind soul is suffering from too much cash, what I really want is the Yaesu 9000 AND the Icom 7800, with one of the new Alpha amps for each. With both, I could give an honest appraisal as to which is better. I'd use the "good one" in here and put the other out in the shop. <:-)) I'd like one of those amps for 6-meters too, but they quit making them.

BPL needs a "repeater" about every 2000 feet or less down an overhead power line. That is not exactly an economical formula to serve truly rural areas.

If would like something a bit more authorative than my opinion, take your pick from the many financial analyses of BPL available at:

http://www.arrl.org/tis/info/HTML/plc/financial.html

Perhaps one of the more definitive conclusions comes from the rural-electric industry itself:

http://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/ecfs/retrieve.cgi?native_or_pdf=pdf&id_document=6516183016

"NRTC and NRECA,with their member rural electric cooperatives remain interested in BPL, as an emerging technology, and have monitored BPL technology developments since 1997. Despite our desire for rapid BPL rollout, we caution that our reseach leads us to conclude that BPL technilogi will not be a viable solution in the near term for rural America."

They are since a bit more optimistic, but there have not been any major rural deploments past a handful in rural communities, where the population density is sufficient to justify the business model. Joe Farmer and his immediate neighbors probably best look to some other solution.

Twas the Night After Christmas, our pockets are bare;
And low and behold, we hear from Ed Hare.

Of stories of poor farmer Brown do tell
Will never be having the broadband from well...

Too costly, we see, for the cheap "R-U-E"
But not "M" of Schaumberg, a mighty whoopie!!

My neighbor and I farmer Brown - can't you tell?
Live ten miles from town and the scourge BPL

With visions of quick, like a flash gone indeed;
But DSL from Alltell had plenty of speed.
To give farmer Brown and myself broadband feed.

RE: Amateur Radio License NN6EE: Warning Notice

Dear Mr. Davis:

On approximately 23 occasions since February of this year, the transmissions from your station have exhibited what appears to be alternator "whine" when mobile, and power supply noise or "hum" when operating from your base. Information before the Commission indicates that you have been notified several times about these problems but have neglected to take action.

We note that, as an Advanced Class licensee, you should have sufficient knowledge to correct this relatively simple problem and should also be familiar with the Amateur rules as set forth in Part 97. Please contact a local Amateur Radio club, however, if you are uncertain how to proceed.

Pursuant to Section 308(b) of the Communications Act of 1934, as amended, you are requested to notify this office within 20 days of the date of this letter as to what action you have taken to correct these problems. Failure to respond, or failure to take corrective action, will result in enforcement action against your NN6EE station and operator licenses.

Lee:

In 30 years of hamming, FCC has never sent me a letter complaining about anything, let alone me making noise. The point of me pasting that letter was to say that Anti-capitalists in glass houses should not throw stones. Catch my drift?
