Did you ever want to participate in a International Space Station mission? Starting Friday, February 3rd, you may get your chance. An old, used Russian spacesuit has been transformed into a most unusual earth orbit satellite. Just add one Kenwood TH-K2AT handi-talkie transceiver, a battery pack, a sensor for temperature readings, a compact voice synthesizer and telemetry device and a small helmet-mounted antenna and you are good to go.
The modified spacesuit will be thrust out of the space station into orbit and will begin broadcasting voice messages and slow scan television on 145.990 MHz FM in the two-meter amateur band. The Kenwood HT produces 5 watts RF output. Discover the time of fly-by using NASA's fascinating J-Pass program available at:
http://science.nasa.gov/RealTime/JPass/25/JPass.asp. Enter your Zip Code and you'll instantly know when the next show begins. Aim your Yagis toward the proper position in the sky! You may hear Suit Sat's 30-second message of greetings, followed by a burst of telemetry. Transmission of a slow scan TV picture ends the sequence.
Mission Specialists at NASA have especially encouraged schools to participate in listening for Suit Sat and reporting receptions to the project's website suitsat.org. Awards will be issued to groups that copy Suit Sat's message. Extra credit is given to those who can capture the slow scan TV picture!
For more information on Suit Sat, head for these web sites:

It should be very close to the ISS position track in it's short lifetime. Probably drifting slowly below and behind the ISS.
JPASS, Heaven's Above or Nova application tracking position for the ISS will be close enough.
Have fun !

HAHA-can you hear it....sssssssuuuuuuiiiiiittttt---ssssssaaaaaaaatttttttttt.....
By the way, screams can't be heard in space.
Just thought I would let your earthbound viewers know that..
Well, if they took Saddam Hussain up in space and let him drift outside the ISS, AL Jazera could interview him before he died from lack of oxygen, a fitting execution, don't you think??Then there is the popping sound which would come afterwards-but nonne would hear that one either...oh well...

One day, many years from now in the future, some poor sod on night watch duty aboard a space station will gaze idly out the window.
Then suddenly out of nowhere, a figure that looks for all the world to be like the floating corpse of a dead astronaut will be drifting silently towards him, arms outstretched.
The poor sod will quicky discover that space suits aren't the only thing that's disposed of in space.

...and the Mars Rovers keep on ticking. One year and ticking. Makes you wonder where our money is better sent?
Tick, tick, tick.

Great news, and I'm glad the discussion is so much more civil here than on QRZ.com...basically had to hear it from the naysayers complaining about tax-dollars being wasted and such, nothing really having to do with the merit (or spirit) of the experiment. I don't normally get involved with ISS stuff on 2 meters, but I just might give this one a try!
Tnx...N5UV...

I get e-mails from spaceweather.com. I received this one today:
Space Weather News for Jan. 31, 2006
http://spaceweather.com
MUST-SEE VIDEO: On Jan. 15th when the Stardust capsule ripped through Earth's atmosphere en route to a parachute landing in Utah, no one had a better view than scientists onboard NASA's DC-8 Airborne Laboratory, and they recorded a spectacular video. In addition to the man-made fireball (Stardust) there are at least two natural meteors in the video. See them all at http://spaceweather.com
SUITSAT: On February 3rd, astronauts plan to hurl an old spacesuit overboard from the International Space Station. The disembodied suit, nicknamed "SuitSat," will proceed to circle Earth, transmitting a radio message which anyone can hear using a police scanner or a ham radio tuned to 145.990 MHz FM. This strange experiment is a test of a sensible idea--that old spacesuits might be transformed into useful satellites. Would you like to listen to SuitSat? Sign up for Spaceweather PHONE http://spaceweatherphone.com and you'll receive alerts when the suit is about to orbit over your area.
