Ham Operators Among Katrina's Unsung Heroes:

Good story. Good writing. And its actually believable.

One thing though you don't hear much about is the great work that ICOM and Kenwood did during the aftermth. My dad who lives near Gulfport and serves as a volunteer Fireman lost his entire rig. Both in his house and truck. We filled out the forms from Kenwood we got from the ARRL and not really expecting anything, but to our surpirse not only got a brand new radio - (in fact a much better radio then he began with) for both his basestation but also two HTs he lost in the water, but a check to help pay for the antenna he lost. So my hat goes off to Kenwood.

I know that ICOM also has helped out many of the hams in his area with free equipment that was lost during the Hurricane. And i mean top of the line stuff. His neighbor got a new 7000 for an old 1980 ICOM boat anchor he lost -- I think both Kenwood and ICOM set up a $100,000 fund to replace equipment.

Sounds to me like real credit should to to the manufacturers that gave away free equipment.

free ride!

My dad told me NOTHING is for free so I'll have to assume that it is the rest of us that are paying for these "FREE" radios. Do I have to destroy mine before I get a replacement?

Every ham...

Every ham is an "Unsung HERO" while he sat at home, passing "traffic". OK?

Fact remains, not one net on HF that I monitored was worth ANYTHING related to what was happening on the ground in the affected areas.

What a bunch of wannabes.... Jeevzus!

Dunno about you, but I never felt like I was sitting at home...in fact, much of my traffic was passed from a rooftop in downtown New Orleans.

Now that you mention it, it would have been nice to have been sitting at home.
