On Tuesday May 23 we had a hardware failure that caused the main eHam
machine to go down. Adding to our troubles, another machine in the
same rack developed a problem within a few hours on the same day. We
attempted to have the machine rebooted Tuesday night so that we could
figure out what had gone wrong but this reboot effort was not
successful. The machine finally got rebooted on
Wednesday morning. When it came back up it it appeared that we had
lost one of the hard drives in the raid array. We were hopeful that
we would be able to bring the site back on-line with the raid array in
a slightly degraded mode while getting a new hard drive purchased and
installed by late Wednesday or early Thursday. After running the site
for a short time it was clear that it would not support the load in
the degraded operating mode. While we had one extra machine (an older
server that used to be the primary eHam database machine 3 years ago)
we decided that it would be better to get a new (fast) machine
as quickly as possible.
Since we were down and would have to build a machine up from scratch
the decision was made to use this opportunity to switch
the operating system back to Linux. Several years ago we had moved
from Linux to freeBSD. Unfortantly, we were never totally pleased with
the database performance while running on freeBSD.
Thursday we ordered a new server that would be delivered locally to
the co-location site that afternoon. All seemed to be going well and
we were looking forward to staying up all or most of the night on
Thursday to setup the new machine and migrate the new operating
system. But, the machine never showed up. It was not until mid day
Friday that the server was finally located - it had been delivered to
the wrong location on Thursday night. Argh!
Friday evening the server was in the rack and on-line - but both of the
admins that would be working on the machine could not get started until
almost midnight. They worked as long as they could before falling
asleep. After a few hours of rest, they were back at it on Saturday morning.
So now we are back on-line. I am sure there will be a rough edges
since we changed Operating Systems. We will get them smoothed out as quickly as we can. We think the new machine and new OS should make
the site hum along quite nicely for several years to come. We will be
removing the old server out, sorting out it's hardware issues, and
putting it back in service as a backup.
Again, we are sorry for all the downtime - I can assure you that we
dislike this more than you do.
We thank everyone for the many emails of support.
Thank You and 73
The eHam.net Team

Glad to have you back. I'd heard some guys griping that this wasn't a "planned outage". You've gotta be kidding - these things are never planned.
Anyway, glad to see you've worked through the major issues. Thanks for your hard work.

Congratulations on getting things back up and running, and a BIG THANK YOU!!!
Some people think (whether they contribute or not) that a web site is always available, 24/7/365.25. And are upset when it sometimes goes down, whether for maintenance or a more serious reason.
thanks again for providing theis web site. Hopefully, some people will now appreciate it more, due to it's temporary abscence.

Ok, having to buy a new server is rough. I finally broke down and decided to subscribe to help offset the cost of the server. The secure credit card page didn't work for me, so I did Paypal. Come on guys, pony up! I seriously doubt that this website is a gold mine. I've used eham for years, I figure $15 is the least I can do. No connection with eham other than as a user.

It may help you to know that others like me have dealt with similar computer problems and have lived through it. Glad to have everything back, but rest assured that it will probably happen again at the very worst time.

Having only been back from Hamvention for a few days and with a spanking new Icom 7000, and now being on the road again without it, I was going through withdrawal even worse with eHam down.
When you first came back I decided it was time to renew the subscription, and I guess it couldn't have come at a better time. That small amount of money is a small price to pay for all the companionship and knowledge eham gives us.
In fact, I'm going over to double my subscription now to help pay for the new server and recommend everybody else to the same. Good luck keeping it together and thanks for all the hard work on our behalf!

Amateur radio does not go down, but alas computer networks do. The fact that a lot of us missed seeing eHam.net on our screens is a testimony to the value that we attach to all the time, effort, and labor put into it on the other end by eHam.net hams. Thanks for all it took to get things up and going once again. You are appreciated. Informed hams and hams who interchange ideas and differing opinions are the hams who get the most out of amateur radio. You help us to get there.

Here's what got me... the day before eHam went down, Windows XP totally crashed on my computer. It's the first time I've ever had XP crash like that since it came out. I couldn't even get it to boot.
So, after working on it for a day (and finally doing a clean install), I got my machine up and running again. As I went to add bookmarks back to IE, I tried eHam and couldn't get it to come up. This happened over a period of several hours. All I could figure was that it worked BEFORE my computer crashed, so the fault must be on MY end.
Eventually, I saw that every other site was working fine, and FINALLY the message came up that eHam's site was indeed down.

Hard drive crashes are no fun; They always seem to happen when you least expect them. I've been running a Linux-based OS, and have had no problems in the three years it's been running. Even moving to a new location, once set up with new IP, Linux kept chuggin' right along. You guys at eham.net do a great job. I am happy to make PayPal donations to the cause. That's the least I could do. Keep up the great work on the #1 Ham Radio site on the Internet!

All things work for the better. I am happy you guys went down. I realized just how much time I have been spending on this eHam site and how little operating I have been doing. After a couple of days of checking and still no eHam I started to get on the air again. What fun I had. Not the negative commentaries and trolling one finds on eHam but REAL PEOPLE with REAL RADIOS and REAL LICENSES. What a breath of fresh air it was. So goodbye eHam. I will not desert you but I am going to spin my dial and it doesn't cost me a subscription fee just because my radios got bigger.

George;
The team did a great job. The server is much more responsive and doesn't chugg along anymore. There were times when it seemed to take forever to access the site and download new pages.
The replies you received could be used as the results of a site survey. Most are interesting and obviously pro-eHam.
Everything from "best ham radio website" to "I check in sometimes 3 times a day" to "wow, I didn't realize how much time I was spending on eHam compared to being on the air".
I wonder how much of a variation you would see in site activity if we were at the peak of a sunspot cycle?
Going by most of the replies, probably not much.

But glad yoou are back...knew you would return.
I especially like the PRODUCT REVIEWS that are in a great sense of order so you can find what you are looking for without having to go through needless reviews of things you are not interested in....something that other sites just can not figure out how to do.

I have twice had drives in RAID5 arrays fail within hours of each other (with no hot spare in the array). Lesson learned: always pay for a hot spare and have another spare in storage.
Over the years I think I have had more disk problems with RAID arrays than with single, simple disks. Go figure!
Good luck.

Been there done that. Being an ISP for about 10 years now, if it can happen it will. Somethings are out of your control. I have only been down three days in years during the hurricanes 2 years ago. 500+ dial-up subscribers ALL had no problems with it! I was surprised.
Even one of my main domains (sunco.com) was stolen by the Chinese about two months ago and took lawyers to get it back. And lots of $$$
I feel for you. Glad to see you back up. I'm glad my servers are sitting right here in the room.

I am glad all is well and as you can see, your site is well apprecited and needed; as one said they needed and eham fix. I too as custome drop by your site at least 4-5 times daily just to read the comments and articles as well as to look at the pics of different op's around the world. THank you for your hard work in providing such a great site for the amateur radio community.

I agree, for those that use this site, please join the many subscribers to help offset the costs that are required to run Eham.net.
An eham subscription makes a nice gift for the new operator that you helped elmer.
Now would be a good time to check you own systems to make sure you can also recover with minimal downtime.

The problem with Mr. Murphy is all his little friends. In addition to "If anything can go wrong, it will," we have:
It will go wrong at the worst possible time.
It will be the most difficult to get at part.
It will be the most expensive part.
It will be the hardest to obtain part.
It will be at the most critical part of the process/equipment.
Shipping the part will fail.
The precise tool or part needed will not be on hand.
I could go on, but you get the picture.
However, in all this of Murphy's law and its corollaries, it is important to remember that Murphy was an INCURABLE OPTIMIST!

Okay,,,Okay
I knew I should subscribe and I've been a fan of Eham for years...so this did it...the time down had me thinking it was gone forever..
So I donated today for the first time and I'm happy to do it.
Keep on with a great site for forums, reviews from users and for sale items.

"Because it was broke and hard to fix" is a good enough answer. Many thanks for all your hard work.

Wow. Glad you got the site back up. I am in IT and realize the challenges it brings sometimes. You are correct . . . usually "everthing" happens when you least want it to. I also realized how much I enjoy and appreciate your site . . . motivated me to subscribe, and I hope many others do as well.
Thanks and 73,

I think it was ridiculous that it was down so long. You guys should get your act together. I think I want my money back. It must have something to do with code no code . There was just too much positive things being said I thought something negative should be thrown out. You guys do a great job. This site is well worth the small amount I donate. Things happen sounds like it was a small miracle that you got it back up as fast as you did. Seems like it is working a lot better that it was.

You guys owe no one an apology....eHam.net is far and away the best ham-radio website ever!!! And probably will never have an equal. No one but you guys know the amount of work, blood and sweat it takes to keep a site of this calibur up and running 24/7.

As I pleaded while you were off line:
Eham come back, any kind of fool could see
There was something in everything about you
Eham come back, you can blame it all on me
I was wrong, and I just can’t live without you
Now that I put it all together
Give me the chance to make you see
Have you used up all the love in your heart
Is there nothing left for me?
Is there nothing left for me?

Glad you're back guys. Good work!
Curious though, as to why the switch was made to FreeBSD in the first place. If it aint broke, don't fix it.
Anyway, I am glad you guys got the problem resolved and now it's on with business as usual.
I needed an excuse to get on the air anyway hi hi.

Your transition back to Linux seems to have resulted in faster downloads with the dial-up connection & old computer which I sometimes use from home.

Give these guys a break! I once ran a system with two Novell servers with Raid 5 disk arrays and a 100MB data link for a hot backup. Even with this level of protection I had what should have been a simple process of replacing a bad drive, restoring the disk array and resyncing the server drag on into a 76 hour thrashing match. The only sure thing with computers is that the WILL fail and sometimes in the most horrible ways.

Funny how you really find out how much you use something when it's not available. Many times over the weekend I ended up using the Google version of an eHam page to find something that I knew you would have.
Glad to hear things are ironed out to your satisfaction. Much better to fix things up the right way rather than just doing a patch just because of us grumpy hams... :-)
We're all just glad it was temporary! Thanks for spending all the time you do on this great resource.

Dear eHam team,
Don’t let it get you down--no pun intended.
After all, it’s a "not for profit" site.
It’s strictly amateur, and as an amateur site there’s no SLA, no guarantees, and strictly on a “best efforts” basis.
Cheers!

I am so glad to hear and better yet to SEE that you are back on line. I never realized how much I depended on your reviews of products until I couldn't get on to check out some. I really do appreciate your product reviews. It is a GREAT service to amateur radio. I am sorry that you had such a problem and I know you are working diligently to improve the site. You all are GREAT!!!
Thanks again for such dedication to amateur radio.

I am glad to see that eham is back again. I am also glad to see that I am not the only one that goes crazy without it. Every night I have to have my coffee (with a tablespoon of peppermint schnapps) and eham.
I can do with out the coffee and schnapps, but I needed my eham fix. I took a little hiates from amateur radio; now that I am back into amateur radio I use eham to get back into the swing of things.
I consider eham to be the best amateur radio site on the internet. I am glad that you guys put in the long hours to get everything back up and running. Keep up the good work.
