My daughter Nicole K0LEY got her license at age 11. She also passed her Morse Code test at age 11.
She is now 13 and has many friends in the ham community.
It is great to see the kids take up an interest in this fine hobby!

If there ever were reasons for operating according to the Amateur's Code, here is a very good one. These younger hams, and there are more out there and hopefully more on the way, are not only on the air, but visiting sites like eHam.net.
Think about what you hear on repeaters and on 75/80 meters, and what you see posted on eHam.net. Do you want to be a part of that when these young people come across it?
If ham radio means anything at all to you, do you want to be a part of those early impressions of amateur radio that will be greeting newcomers?
I have had an anonymous name poster attempt to mock me on eHam.net by asking me if I was the chaplain. No, I am not the chaplain, but I do understand why Paul Segal, W9EEA, composed the Amateur's Code back in 1928, and I do keep a framed copy hanging in my shack to remind me and my buddies of what it is all about when we go on the air.
Let's raise the quality of the QSOs and the posts. Merry Christimas and Happy New Year!

"Interest in amateur radios has been growing by leaps and bounds.
MARS had less than 25 members just four years ago and now has more than 120."
Do you remember the thrill when you got your first amateur license in the mail? Of course it is a "big deal"!
This little girl is a part of the future of amateur radio, and as long as the present license holders act like ladies and gentlemen on the air, newcomers will keep adding to our ranks and continuing the good operating practices they hear on the air.
You can either be a part of the problem or a part of the solution. Choose to be greater than you seem.

Congratulations Rachel, I can assure you that you have accomplished at 10 what many of us took years to do. I myself was 23 when I passed my first ticket and it was hard too. You can be proud of such a commendable accomplishment. Now get on the air and have fun. If you operate HF you will have many older guys like me standing in line to talk with you. By the way my daughters name is also Rachel and she too was and is very gifted. My guess is that you are also a good student at school. All I can say is keep up the good work and your family can be very proud of you.--- I hope to get to work you on HF soon....Bruce NU0R

Taken right from KI4EYO's web site, "Hi, my name is Doug and my call sign is KI4EYO.I am 14 years old. I have been a ham radio operator since April 2004.You can usually find me on the 146.820 repeater in Mobile,Al. It has a 203.5 Hz tone. Most of my QSOs are made on ECHOLINK so look for me there."
Congratulations Rachel.

No, it's not about you. It's about the 10 year old girl who got her license. You chose to denigrate the situation. It really is not all that common for a 10 year old to get their license. People might have said the same about you when you got your license in 2004 at the age of 12 -- plus or minus.

I disagree.
Prove me wrong and let us know when it happens again.
Would you be so kind as to share the reason for your discontent with us?
Did you not get a warm welcome when you got your license? If not, my apologies. You certainly deserved it, but that should not stand as a reason to scoff at the accomplishments of those who are a few years younger than you are.
One could ask in retribution, if it is not so unusual for 10 year olds to pass the Technician test, why didn't you do it?

"You certainly deserved it, but that should not stand as a reason to scoff at the accomplishments of those who are a few years younger than you are."
The last week at eHam has shown that there's A LOT of people on the site that have nothing better to do than complain about something. Personally, I did a lookup on his call just to see if I could get an idea of what kind of person would look down their nose at a child who passed their Tech test. Apparently it's a very bitter type of person.

Congrats to Rachel.
And she had to learn the CODE too, even though it was only at Five WPM, it is an accomplishment that will not be required for future kids getting into the hobby. She can be PROUD to say that she got her license while it was still a challenge.
I believe you will see lots of younger folks getting into the hobby now that the testing is pretty much a giveaway for the "license".

My niece, my brothers daughter, received her license at the age of seven in 1937. Her test was taken in the Federal building on Washington Street in New york City by an FCC examiner.

Congratulations to everyone that gets a license at a young age. I always wished that I knew more about amateur radio at that age versus my late teens when I first knew anything about it. I am all for people getting on the air and actually doing something to preserve and enhance our hobby and bands. The Amateur Radio Service is just that a service and a way for you to help your fellow man. If you seem to be unwilling to do that or participate in the community in a civil manner, perhaps it would be best to turn your license in.
After all, why do you need ultra sensitive amounts of negativity. As if these kids, etc don't get enough of it from the media and all of the nonsense they are subjected to throughout the average day.
So bring about more of these people who want to grow, participate, and give something back to the hobby.
Thanks for the forum and thanks to the Eham crew for allowing me to say my two cents.

All around the world young hams seem to be joining. Who said its not a dead hobby. Long live amatuer radio.
My nephew recently got his licence at age 9 (VK3FMLL) and his brother at age 12 (VK3FCLL). They also come from an amatuer family (father - VK3GL, myself - uncle - ES2DY (VK2DYI), their grandfather (VK3DWU).
Its great to see the hobby alive an we should welcome with open arms all the new people young and old and anywhere inbetween.

No Doug don't flatter yourelf into thinking the numbers of hits increase on your pathetic site was a postive thing. Many of us "experienced" hams at times need to be reminded of what the term "LID" describes as most of us "Experienced" hams have never been one. You certainly fit the classic description. Why don't you put your radios away and play your X-box you no doubt waited for hours in bad weather at Wal-Mart to buy as I am sure an converstation with you on the ham bands would prove to be boring full of self-adulation and a waste of band-width.

Congrats to Rachel! I look forward to saying "hello" on one of the Carrollton machines. Just a little more studying and you can get your General class license and talk worldwide.
We don't know if she'll ever see this thread but if she does, I hope she ignores those who would say "no big deal". If she were my daughter, I wouldn't even tell her about eham.com or qrz.com with all the venom/hatred that goes on here.
By the way, I don't know where you guys got the idea that she passed element 1. The article doesn't say that. But if she did, more power to her.
As for the following drivel:
"She can be PROUD to say that she got her license while it was still a challenge."
and...
"I believe you will see lots of younger folks getting into the hobby now that the testing is pretty much a giveaway for the "license"."
Yeah, we know, radio/electronics theory, operating practices, and FCC rules (the written tests) are meaningless (a "giveaway") if you don't master that almightly Morse. Can't you save this garbage for one of the many "code vs. no-code" mud-slinging threads?

KA0MR- If my site is so pathetic, The "404 Not found" error on your must represent your so called "Experience".
"It really is not all that common for a 10 year old to get their license."
Is that so..
"My niece, my brothers daughter, received her license at the age of seven"
"My nephew recently got his licence at age 9 (VK3FMLL) and his brother at age 12"
"By the way, I don't know where you guys got the idea that she passed element 1. The article doesn't say that."

WAY TO GO!!! :) Its nice to hear that the younger crowds are making their way on the hf bands. The HF bands are a bit on the dull side if you ask me,..nothing much in common,..to be honest. Its getting a bit tiring listening day after day about the same ol' age related problems, and especially the "know it all" attitudes. We're all equal as one. "Variety is the spice of life". Its time for a cool change. :)

What is really special about this is that it got published in the general press. I.e. good PR for amateur radio outside the amateur radio publications.
Although others have achieved their licenses this young or even younger, it is still a special accomplishment. It shows dedication on the part of both the student and the parents. It shows parents who are interested in and interacting with their children rather than just running them around to one activity after another.

Gee Whiz..How Bizarre! I cant believe it escaled this far. Iam fairly new to ham radio after taking a major absence for nearly 25 years, and its terrible to see this negativity among some of you. And it seems like its getting worse by the year. I dont remember people acting this rude 25 years ago. Lets be happy for each other, and pat our fellow man/woman on the back for the goals each one of us achieved in life. The little girl who passed her test is simply amazing in the minds of normal people, but the ones with the mental defects gotta rain on her parade. Why be like that? Does it make you feel good or something to be an a**hole, especially at her young and tender age?? Dummy up losers. Its a positive achievement/goal and she needs to know what she did was a "good thing". This will build up more and more confidence in her life, and who knows, maybe one day she'll become the President. This "BIG DEAL" Attitude really sucks. But, like i always said many times *There's at least one in every crowd" that ruins someone's day.Iam glad we only live to about 75 years of age..I couldn't handle it any longer than that. Honestly, I think its all about jealousy when it comes to this topic. People.. Bottom line..."Say something nice, or dont say it at all..Whats wrong with some of you? Get a life. 73 K7PWR Happy New Years To All!! :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

There is nothing negative about it. This in not newsworthy. This is not even news at all. Who really cares if a 10 year old gets one. Or if a 15 year old gets one. Now if a 2 year old gets one thats newsworthy. This is not NEW. This is not NEWsworthy.

She is no smarter than any other person, or any other 10 year old. And only a "Dummy" would say she has a chance at President.

This is Rachel’s’ father, W5WZY, extra class and VE. I am thankful for all of the recognition and support regarding my daughter’s recent accomplishment. It has been really good for her.
She did study hard to pass the Technician test. Needless to say, I am very proud of her. A seed has been planted for sure. Whether it flourishes and she goes on to get her General or Extra class license only time will tell. Knowing my daughter, it certainly won’t be because she can’t do it. It will only depend on if she wants to do it. A great part of that depends on all of us. The positive reinforcement and encouragement that many of the members in our club and others she has contacts with will certainly have an impact.
I want to thank each and everyone who congratulated Rachel on this thread. Unfortunately, I won’t be showing any of it to her because a couple of individuals who felt it necessary to belittle a 10-year-old girls accomplishment on a public forum. I hope your comments do not discourage other youngsters who are thinking about or already studying for their licenses.
We hams are well known for our nurturing and mentoring. In the hobby we have a quaint term for it, Elmering. I wonder what the original Elmer would have thought about the dissenter’s comments. We must be careful not to trample the seedlings with indifference. We may be behind a keyboard and be using a screen name, but we are all still accountable for everything we say.
I’m not going to engage in bantering. I think it is best to it just like we do on the air, by ignoring those types as if they weren’t even there.

If you tell her anything, tell here that her "accomplishment" was a good thing. But she is definitly not special for what she did. many have done it before her, even at a younger age. And many will continue to do it. She was not special in any way. So dont treat her as if she was.

Randall, congrats to your daughter Rachel on her technician license. My son is 8 and we are working slowly to get him licensed in the next few years. He has the interest, but attention span is a little short! No matter what anyone says, that is quite an accomplishment!
As for the young ham KI4EYO, whether or not something is newsworthy is a matter of opinion. With all the negativity and outright hostility toward the code being dropped, I for one am pleased to hear this kind of story. Another licensed ham is great for this hobby.
My advice, and you can take it or not, which is your perogative of course, is that negativity or discounting someones acheivements no matter how large or in this case how small you feel it is serves absoulutely no purpose. It only makes you look immature, foolish or bitter at least. I can see by your profile, you are very active in the hobby. I for one think that that is "newsworthy".

Andy W6AWS

Give the kid a break, he's only 14 for goodness sake!
He simply expressed an opinion and he's entitled to it whether you agree with him or not. None of you guys ever had a bad day?
Personally, I think it's great any young (or old) person getting their license and joining this great hobby; especially if they go the extra mile and learn morse code.
Well done Rachel and well done Doug. Don't let these grumpy old me put either of you off the hobby.

And express his opinion, he did! Likewise, the rest of us are also expressing our opinions as you did also.
Anyone is free to say what they want, however, they are not free from any fallout because of their statements. 14 or 140, he made a couple of statements that the majority did not agree with, and was called on it. If you are going to make statements in a public forum, be prepared to take "heat".
Personally, I think that is part of the reason our kids today are so "soft". KI4EIO is certainly entitled to his opinion. I'll be the first to defend that. But I don't think he should get be exempt from challenge because he is "just 14".
Somehow I think he can take the "heat". :-)

You're right, the internet is NOT ham radio. However, I can't think of one single place, be it on the air, on the internet, or walking down the street, where it is appropriate to use a callsign that does not belong to you.

Reply: Big deal. The call doesn't belong to anyone. If it was I wouldn't use it. As far as the internet how come people use phoney names on ebay.com. What are they trying to hide? Why don't they use their real name? Are you saying thats wrong? How about your email address why don't you use your real name @ xxxx.com. What, are you trying to hide something? Yeah right, walking down the street, next time your walking down the street instead of saying Good morning or Good afternoon say "Hello I'm KX8N" to everybody you see. Soon they'll haul you off to the rubber room(mental ward).

You better check FCC regulations because it is very illegal to use a potetially valid FCC issued callsign unless it has been specifically "granted" to you. So since KA7PQQ meets this criteria to are violating FCC regulation and that puts you in a position to be denied an FCC license in the future or if you really have a license granted to you it can be cancelled because of it. A word to the wise it is very easy to get a licensed cancelled because of character issues. I am an Offical Observer and have accomplished license cancellations of hams meeting this criteria.

I would say the reason that people do not use OR should not use their correct name is hackers on the cpu higher chain than me and my business partner, can hack their cpu's and cause more problems than carter has little pills

"Congratulations to everyone that gets a license at a young age. I always wished that I knew more about amateur radio at that age versus my late teens when I first knew anything about it."
Ditto.
The first time I was sure I ever saw an amateur radio was when I was just about to turn 16 - an Icom W32A carried by my orchestra director/supervisor (I was a teacher's aide for him and others in the department) who used it to talk to his family. If I had gotten my license then (when my focus was on music and organization), we could have talked on the Disneyland repeater the day the orchestra took a class trip.
After a couple years of learning about ham radio with the assistance of a radio scanner and the internet, I got my license.
