Brazilian Power Company Launches BPL Pilot Project:
According to media
reports, Brazilian power distributor Eletropaulo plans to begin testing
broadband over power line (BPL) Internet service in São Paulo, Brazil.
Eletropaulo reportedly has been conducting BPL lab tests for the past three
years. The reports indicate that the utility now considers BPL to have
reached the point where it's economically viable to offer it to residential
users. Eletropaulo is hoping to attain throughput speeds of 200 Mbps.
Eletropaulo provides electrical power to some 5 million customers in two
dozen Brazilian cities. Details of BPL equipment to be deployed and any HF
frequencies to be used in São Paulo are not yet known. Late last year, a
public BPL pilot project went on line in the Regional Administrative Center
of Restinga on the outskirt of Porto Alegre, Brazil. That system uses
Mitsubishi BPL hardware. Although BPL testing has been conducted in Brazil,
there have been no commercial deployments.

That's nice...but it has nothing to do with ham radio.

It has everything to do with ham radio in Brazil. This board is not limited to American hams.

Don't these bozo's know that arrl has determined that BPL is a "flawed technology" that "won't work"?
Who cares if the likes of Motorola, IBM and Matshusta say otherwise. What could they possibly know compaired to the almighty, the all-knowing and infallable arrl?

"Who cares if the likes of Motorola, IBM and Matshusta say otherwise."
I certainly don't care! They are in the business of making money. They could care less if their moneymaking activities destroy a national resource.
But they do NOT say otherwise, by the way. They are just selling.

Actually, they DO say otherwise.
By pouring money into BPL, they are clearly saying that BPL DOES, in fact, WORK, contrary to arrl propiganda.
Motorola "does care" about the "national resource". They make 99% of their money off it. If Motorola thought that BPL would harm the effectiveness of their PS systems (the performance of which Motorola GUARNTEES) then Motorola would not be piddling around with BPL.
Perhaps some people should tone down their hysterical hyperbole about how BPL is the end of wireless communications and alleged harm to a national resource.

I would suggest a look at the real world. Motorola does exactly ZERO business in the HF spectrum, not 99%. In no way does their BPL harm their other business. (And they do not, of course, guarantee any performance.) It is simply off their radar if it harms anything else. They have no stake. That's just business. If I run a taxi, should I care about a florist?

My state of South Carolina may just put the BPL issue away (at least within the state). They just passed the enabling legislation to start setting up a statewide system of free wireless internet access for everyone.
First once again! (But I live in a border county, so may not be out of the woods... unless N.C. puts in a similar system.)
