Many amateur radio dealers have announced that they have received
shipments of Kenwood's long-anticipated TS-2000 HF/6M/VHF/UHF/1.2Ghz
tranceiver. Kenwood has finally made the manual available in PDF
form on their website.

Let's hope the early reviews on this radio are positive!

If the reviews are good, I'll probably be getting one of these!

I've spent many hours this week behind the front panel of one. I can't find any bugs, or goofs. It appears to have all the best features of the TS-870S, plus all the added satellite and weak signal vhf/uhf capabilities. I'm very impressed.

I got to play with one down at HRO San Diego today. It's not as big as I thought it would be. It's just a
little bit bigger than the 570. The receive audio sounded real clean and smooth from what I could tell but then I'm not as experienced as a lot of other people. I wish HRO had a VHF/UHF antenna hooked up to the radio as well so I could have tried out the HF + VHF/UHF combination. I love radios and the idea of having a radio that can do HF AND VHF/UHF at the same time in one neat box is appealing to me... especially in a mobile application when it comes to today's vehicles and their limited locations for mounting equipment. It will be interesting to see how well this radio does. All I know is my wife caught me playing with the radio and I apparently looked like a kid with the Sears Christmas Catalog. At $2300 it doesn't seem like an outrageous price considering what it offers and compared to the FT-847/IC-746. One thing I'll have to admit though... it would be nice if it had an analog meter instead of a digital one but that's minor.

I played with one at the Virginia HRO candystore. It is pretty impressive especially with the possibility of operating satellite (if that ever gets working). I also liked the packet cluster interface. You can set an internal second receiver up on your local packet cluster and see the results on screen. Punch a button and you are on the DX station's frequency. Pretty neat.

The second receiver only works on 2 mtrs and above so this is not like the Yaesu FT-1000s. You have an A/B VFO for split operation but no true second receiver for HF.

The filtering is all DSP, like the Icom756 Pro, so there are no filters to buy. It seemed to work well but the DSP Noise reduction was very hollow sounding.

I didn't like the fact that the front panel seems crowded and there are a ton of menus. Worst of all, was no bandstacking register like Icom. If you hit the packet cluster button and are taken to a station at the other end of the band there is no button to take you back - you gotta spin the wheel and there is no shuttle jog like Yaesu. I didn't notice that the tuning moved faster as you spin like Icom. So, if you have the tuning set on "fine" you got a lot of spinning to do. Now, it is possible I just didn't know how to do it.

This is not really a review of the radio but some thoughts. This radio has some definite possibilites but I found the lack of bandstacking and quick tuning to be a major annoyance.

well, hopefully a few of the "candy store" hams are taking a few home with them. I think we'll have a verdict soon enough. It is quite rare for a radio to be smooth and polished as soon as it's released so I'm not too surprised that it has some annoyances. I don't want to wait very long for this one, so hopefully kenwood will release updated versions very quickly.

Take all other radios in this price class and above and trash them. This radio is truly amazing. Have been comparing it side by side with 756Pro, JST-245, and others and in many cases it is equal to or better than the rest. Have spent 10 hours with it so far. When I have more time I will give a comparsion between them. In my opinion Kenwood did a brilliant job in the design and QC is excelent.

Just a follow up on my original posting. The question was raised about satellite operation. The radio will do any mode on either band in the satellite mode. I also tried the Sky Command function with my TM-D700 dual band mobile. After getting all the parameters set, which took a while, it performed extremely well, You can control most major functions on the radio without any problems. The transmit audio on HF was good, according to the reports I received. In fact, I had to tell the other stations what I was doing. No one knew I wasn't sitting in front of the 2000. I agree on not having band stacking registers. I have become used to that on my Icom, and it is very handy.
So far, that is the biggest knock I can find. Even if some minor bug rears its ugly head, the is a tremendous accomplishment by Kenwood. I think they have raised the bar a couple of notches!!

RE: Kenwood TS-2000 is shipping

Yep, Kenwood has a much better reputation for quality control than most of the other companies (I especially hate Yaesu). So, ya never know, this rig might be the one to buy right off the bat.

I have had the TS-2000 for over a week and I am still learning it's fine points. The highlights:
The if dsp is well done and easy to use.
Variable bandwidth(a DSP function) is great. The low freq and high frequency cutoffs are displayed as you change them.
The satellite features are well done. Much improved over the 790a! Now if they only can get AO40 working well.
I have done some weak signal work and it appears to be simular to the 570 which means it is good.
The menu display is very easy to understand.
One word of caution don't buy the MC90 microphone for this rig. the output is too low for FM (mentioned in the manual) and the Vox gain has to be at max on HF (not mentioned in the manual).
More later......73

I was told from a good source. A tri bander set up with the 1000 mp V a 756Pro, 746, and Ts 2000.
All switched to the same qso back and forth. 1000 the tops. then the 745/756 were a tie and was told the the 756 sounded hollow. Now the TS 2000 was the worst lower sig on rec and very hollow. THis is the report I got. But I would like to do the test myself. I will say this I wont buy a "new" rig. There are ALWAYS problems and with kenwoods track record on customer turn around times well you will be waiting along time for some warranty fixs/upgrades. I like kenwood but the serv. dept is Slowwwwwwwwwww!! I will wait a good min of 6-8mo to find out how this thing really performs.

Sky Command Legal?
by KE9ZZ on January 9, 2001 Mail this to a friend!
I know there was some legal issues with some aspects of Kenwood's Sky Command. Has this been resolved? I think even ARRL objected to some part of Sky Command.

RE: Sky Command Legal?
by KC7YCL on January 9, 2001 Mail this to a friend!
Yes, it has been resolved. The problem was that Sky Command used control signals on the 2M band, which is illegal. The TS-2000 uses Sky Command II which just reverses that and uses control signals on 440Mhz instead.

Anyone who thinks that Kenwood is junk obviously is extremely prejudiced. I directly compared the ICOM 756 Pro, the Kenwood TS2000, and the Kenwood TS570D(G) at Ham Radio Outlet in Phoenix and frankly they all compare favorably. I made comparisons on receive and all three rigs received the same strong and well as weak (and I mean weak) stations identically--there was no difference!!! Anyone who says otherwise only has a grudge against a particular manufacturer and the drivel they purport is utter nonsense.

My TS-2000 arrived today (1/12/01) and was waiting for me when I got home from work. I've had to do some things this evening like eat dinner, pay bills, and go to the computer store with my son, so I've only had an hour or two to get acquainted with the new rig. But, here are some initial impressions, anyway.

Manual: For the past several days I've been looking at a copy of the manual (in pdf format) that I downloaded from the Kenwood website. The actual manual that came with my radio is the same version that I downloaded so I don't have to worry about what I've been reading not agreeing with the "real" thing. Included was a one page addendum that corrected some typos, reworded a few operational items, and added a "demonstration" mode which I haven't tried yet.

Schematics: Comes on four HUGE (33" x 23") sheets printed on both sides. These things are so big, they're actually READABLE!

Appearance: I've heard a lot of negative comments about the appearance of this rig. In fact, when I saw the first pix of this thing I thought it was ugly. Seeing it in the full color brochure made it look a little better. However, when I unpacked the rig earlier this evening, I was in awe -- this is really a good looking radio! The pix on the 'net and in the ads do not do it justice.

Rear Panel: The 440 MHz antenna connector is an N-type (the HF/50 Antennas 1 & 2 and the 144 MHz connectors are SO-239). Also, all three DIN receptacles, the 9-pin D-sub connector, and the modular jack for the cable to the remote control head came with removable protective covers on them. A nice touch.

Packet Cluster Monitor/Tune: Very nice. Pops the DX station's frequency into the SUB display, sends the station's call through the speaker in CW, then, crawling across the bottom of the SUB display come the call, time, and comments. If in auto tune mode, the DX freq gets popped into the MAIN display and you're ready to go.

Antenna Tuner: No motors, just L's & C's switched in and out by relays. It's definitely noisier than the tuners with motor-driven variable caps, but on the bands I tried it, tuning lasted less than 10 seconds (probably more like five) so it's not too bad.

That's about all I can say at this time. It's supposed to rain all day tomorrow so I should have plenty of time to play with the new toy, including some A/B comparisons with a couple of other rigs. I will post again when I have something more to share.

73, Jim, K5QL

I am curious about what you mean. Except for IC706s I can't think of a mfr or a rig that has gotten an update. It appears to me as if huge production runs are made, and they then ship radios for a long time afterwards. Am I wrong?

I agree with Rick. Unless I'm missing something, the only companies that do true "updates" to radios on the fly are Ten-Tec(with the Pegasus and Jupiter) and Kachina(with their 505). Of course, all of these radios are really computers in a box and they merely provide new software to do a flash update of the respective ROM. As far as the Big 3(Kenwood, Yaesu and Icom), I'm not aware of periodic "updates" made available to everyone. They merely come out with a new radio(e.g., IC-706, IC-706 Mk II, IC-706 MK II-G). That way, they can make more $$$$. Now if Kenwood is going to make software updates for the TS-2000 available via software download, that could be a real plus for this radio. Anyone know if they are going to do that?

Euh, and what about the ...

- FT1000, being at Mark .... V in the mean while.
- Kenwood also released some upgrades for its THD7 and TMD700 regarding packet DAMA support in Europe.
- Upgrades of TMV7 (without any notice) regarding the riblle on the 1750Hz in its initial models
- FT847 (without any notice) that was full of bugs in the initial versions

Fact is that some vendors give those versions new numbers to state that something has improved, like others do.

Anyway, topic here is the TS-2000 and all information is welcome. Especially those that relate to the TRX itself (I don't care that much about switching freqs based on cluster info, or a backlight frontpanel)

Hi,

I did found somewhere that it contained flash RAM... this could open a way to solve bugs (afterall, a modern TRX contains a lot of software) in the transceiver.

by KC7YCL on January 14, 2001 Mail this to a friend!
Yeah, most manufacturers that really care will be continually improving their products. I like these radios that use a lot of software because if a problem is found, there's a chance that it could be fixed in software, even for the early adopters. Of course, all the newer production run radios would include the updates as usual. I've been talking to my local dealer and he says that the TS-2000 seems to be pretty polished and bug free.

A lot of people have noticed the similarities between the TS-2000 and the TS-570, so maybe they just redesigned the older, more reliable radio so they could incorporate the newest technologies without having to reinvent the wheel. That'd at least reduce the number of things that could go wrong. I think it'll be a while before I can afford to buy one of these (saving for college), but it's comforting to know that when I do finally get one it will perform like I expect it to, with a minimum of quirks.

As a side note, the radio has been ready for release for quite a while now, it's just been delayed because the FCC wouldn't give it type-acceptance until Kenwood redesigned the Sky Command feature. Who knows, maybe during those delays Kenwood's engineers DIDN'T just sit on their hands and wait...maybe they toyed with their new rig and double checked everything to make sure it was all working like it's supposed to. Kenwood makes most of it's money in consumer audio equipment, so I get the impression that the Amateur market is mostly a labor of love for them.

By the way, I just bought a Kenwood TH-G71A handheld (two of them actually) and it's the best handheld radio I've ever touched. I'm going to post a review on it, but it won't matter much because it's already got close to a '5' rating from the other reviewers. I own a Yaesu FT-50RD, which was my first radio, and I honestly had no idea how sloppily designed it was. I wouldn't say the FT-50 is awful, but for the money the Kenwood is a far better value.

A post above, in this forum, says that Kenwood redesigned their Sky Command to satisfy the FCC. Can anyone tell us what the changes in Sky Command II+ involve?

I was under the impression that the repeating of HF to a Freq. below 220mHz (2 meters) was the problem. Inasmuch as the D7 & D700 are 440/144 rigs only, I don't understand what Kenwood changed to satisfy the regulations and remain in full duplex mode. Thanks

RE: Kenwood TS-2000 is shipping
by KC7YCL on January 15, 2001 Mail this to a friend!
Your impressions are almost correct. It is OK to retransmit HF below the 220MHz band, but the problem with the original Sky Command was that it's digital control signals were on the 144MHz band. All as far as I know, the only thing different in Sky Command II is that the HF signals are repeated on 144MHz and the control signals are on the 440MHz band.

Original Sky Command
144MHz - Control signals for remote rig
440Mhz - Repeated audio from remote rig

New Sky Command II
144MHz - Repeated audio from remote rig
440Mhz - Control signals for remote rig

As you can see, all they did was swap the bands. No big deal, but it complies with FCC rules now.

Gene,

Thanks for the reply, but I think I stated the problem correctly in my first post. I have used Sky Command (original) and, to the best of my recollection, the only thing on the VHF channel is HF audio and a morse code ID.

The ARRL News Release (http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2000/07/28/3/) seems to concur. According to the ARRL article, the FCC said:

"The Commission turned away Kenwood's argument that because the 2-meter link was NOT used for telecommand, it should not be considered an auxiliary station. "We disagree," the FCC said in its Order. Section 97.213(a) of the Commission's Rules requires that if radio is used for the control link between the control point and the station, the control link must use an auxiliary station." The FCC said the VHF link was integral to Sky Command and that Kenwood's view represented "at best a tortured interpretation" of the rules".

So, I've heard that the FCC has blessed Sky command II+, but I can't find any reference to this. If anyone can post a reference to this, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks again & 73,

Bob

OK, I did it. I emailed Kenwood and here is the exchange. It sounds like a computer generated response, although I'm confident that Leo was at the controls. My interpretation is that Sky Command of any flavor, even in the TS-2000, remains illegal in the U.S. Following is my question (friend's calls edidted out) and his answer.

To: Leo Fahmie, Kenwood Service

You have exchanged emails with Rick, K???, some of which are copied below for your reference. Six members of our group are seriously considering purchasing six TS-2000s, but I still have some concerns.

What is your position on the FCC's decision on Sky Command. I see you are still promoting it as Sky Command II+, and I've heard this has been designed to address the FCC's order, but I am unable to find any references to this. Can you tell me the details.

Thank you,

Bob Fuller, W7KWS

(RESPONSE)

Dear Kenwood Customer: Bob

Thank You for your e-mail. The Sky Command issue is not over for Kenwood, we still feel that a rule change is in order, and we will hopefully make it reality some day.

If you need further assistance, please e-mail us again.

Sincerely,

Kenwood Customer Care

Today, I went to my local Ham Store to checkout this receiver and it did not have a black finish. All the advertisements showed a black finish. In real life, it is silver/grey. Is Kenwood shipping 2 colors or is this just a photo that appears to make it look like a black finish. ( I think the black finish looks sharp!)

In the February 2001 issue of CQ, Gordon West reviewed the TS-2000, in the photos appeared with the silver/grey finish.

Is the finish silver/grey or Black?

Hey Hey, I also went to my local ham store and played with the TS-2000. I must say, it's not as ugly as it looks in the advertisements, and I kinda like the silver-gray color, although I think I'm partial to black too. I didn't play with it for long because I was more interested in buying vintage Drake gear, but I think within a year I will definitely be owning one of those Kenwoods. The TS-2000X model, with the 1.2GHz option factory installed, will be available at the end of April according to my dealer. I'll be waiting for that and I'll be waiting for the rig to get thouroughly burnt-in before I pick one up.

I have been operating the NEW Kenwood TS-2000 out of the Kenwood Club station for the last 2 months.
The club call is W6DJY, and I have been hanging out almost daily around 28.480 USB at 19:00 - 20:00 UTC. I have had more fun with TS-2000, and I will have to say its the best transceiver I have ever operated. I have been in the amateur radio business for 14 years. 10 years at Henry Radio, and now 4 years with Kenwood. Its just a FUN radio to operate. The pictures do not do it justice, you have to see it and touch it, and then you will know what I'm talking about. I know what you are going to say he is partial he works for Kenwood, hey guys don't forget I am a HAM too. During the last 14 years I have been able to operate all the manufacturers HF transceivers ( Icom 775, 756,756 Pro, FT-1000MP, FT-1000D, TS-940S, TS-950SDX, TS-870S, TS-570S(G) (which I own now), but none of them are as fun as the TS-2000.

Imagine rag chewing on 7.265 LSB in the MAIN band , and having your DX packet cluster on in the SUB band (example 145.690 FM). Previously if you want to see any DX spots you needed a..............

1. VHF radio
2. TNC
3. Computer or Dumb Terminal
4. TNC Software

NOW all you need is the Kenwood TS-2000. To engage this great feature all you have to do is...

Step 1 Press the SUB band key, and enter your local DX Packet Cluster frequency (EX 145.690 FM)
Step 2 Press the Orange FUNC key, and then press the SET/P.C.T key
Step 3 The radio is now in Packet Cluster Tune (P.C.T), above the main band display a P.C.T. will appear

Oh I forgot you NEED to get the VS-3 voice sythesizer, it works great, and adds alot to the DX cluster feature.

OK now I will tell you how it works, as I said earlier you are rag chewing on 7.265 LSB, and all of a sudden the radio starts to speak to you say 3YDX, suddenly the SUB band receiver changes over to
14.195 USB, and all this great information starts scrolling across the screen on the DX's frequency. Now all you have to do to get to that frequency is just press the SET key, and the frequency changes to the MAIN band. You may also go into the menu, and turn it to automatic, that means when the DX spot is received the radio automatically transfers that information to the MAIN band..............WOW..........

Thanks for your time & 73,

Leo Fahmie KJ6HI

I also spent a few hours testing this rig. It is very enjoyable! The automatic frequency tuning of DX Packet Cluster (Built in TNC with no computer needed) is awesome!

My dream shack would be to purchase the TS-2000 with the ARCP-2000 software. Connect it to the CS-900 Simplex Interconnect made by CSI.(The CS-900 is also a reverse simplex autopatch.) From work, since I have to wear a telephone headset all day long anyway, I could dial the telephone number for the CS-900 and enter my security code. Once connected, the autopatch only keys the microphone when the person talks into the microphone. My next step would be to install one modem on the com port of the TS-2000 and set it for autoanswer with the modem dip switches. At work, I would install the ARCP-2000 software and simply get a modem to modem cnnection and be able to control the entire rig from my desktop at work. Imagine how easy DXing would be from work!

Let me go back to dreaming now!!!!

Has anyone tried out the ARPC-2000 software?

I'm first one in Norway running Ts-2000
I'm dxer and just love the setup of the rig-
I've compare it to Ts-850 with all filters,
and it's hit the 850 such as well-
but only one thing I have to say that you don't can
switch RX antenna on/off without menu, or when You
use Dx-cluster function the radio is blocked from menu
and VHF/UHF, I mean that is notso good!
But else Kenwood have done a better job than Ts-870
-funny to see Ya comparing it to Icom and JRC.
So now what will be next from KENWOOD? TS-2000 PRO?
with LCD Screen etc??
GOOD LUCK ENJOY THE KENWOOD CREATION!!:))))
