I think it will be more attractive and more useful if the QSO got a more information beside the classical 59 report and QTH.

I thought about many things but I have found that if I know the interest of the other side I could understand him more.

Also this could trigger the interest and concern of many people to many beautiful things in the world.

It could be a positive way to increase the consciousness of the ham community to many aspect of the life, things like environment, art, music, a few to mention.

I called it (TOI), the Topic of interest. So the QSO well be like this Ur report is 59,my QTH is... my TOI is reading. Or TOI is music... or Satellite, drawing. Etc.

What do you think ?

I agree with Dr. Ali Omar. I'm a DX chaser, contester, and CW rag chewing fan for some 49 years. Contesting is a given protocal to work with. Rare DX typically has many folks lined up for that elisive 'new' one. But for working typical DX, why not strike up a decent conversation, after all building friendships are part of what the hobby should be about. I wouldn't mind knowing my 'real' signal strength at your QTH, would help me analyze my antenna system. I'm interested in know your QTH and something about it and about you.
599 - Tom- Va - TOI: Jazz, remote controlled helicopters, Corvette's, and anything new about this hobby or yourself!

I think this is a great idea! I even put a little bit about my interests on the back of my QSL cards and this has once generated a very nice letter in response. I haven't been an amateur very long, but I enjoy the contacts that are more than a signal report and location and name.

Great Idea! I think I will start using it in my QSOs and see what response I get.

My TOI - Astronomy, Spaceflight, Music and of course radio.

Great Idea. After nearly 30 years as a ham I have been questioning why nearly every HF QSO I try to have boils down to a contest exchange.

It's horrible.

What satisfaction can you possibly get from hearing "your 59 in Upper Volta, 73's...."?

Perhaps along with the TOI index would be to restrict contesting, or contest like QSO's to a certain segment of each band. Hey, instead of a CW section.....why not a Contest Section!

How about also restricting contest dates. Seems that there is one every weekend, just in time so that the average working Joe can't spend his weekend ragchewing.

Great idea.

Suggest you try one of the digital modes--PSK, MFSK, RTTY--they seem to lend themselves to a more conversational style of contact. I've met and chatted with many interesting fellow hams from the keyboard.

This is an excellent idea. I am new to the hobby also, and often tell people that I spoke to east paducah or where ever and they ask me what is going on there. All I usually have to say is, "well we just exchanged signal reports". I have often wished to get just a little bit of personal or technical info from my QSO's. This TOI is what I think is needed to make QSO's more personal and improve my satisfaction with the hobby.

This is an excellent idea. The standard topics even beyond the report, qth, and name are gettting to be old hash with age, number of years a ham, equipment, and occupation. At least with TOI there might be a chance of sharing some other common interests. My TOI would be hunting, fishing, and gardening. Let's go for it.

Absolutely agree with ST2NH and all who have commented positively.Just got back into the hobby after 35 year hiatus and nothing has changed! RST, name, QTH, maybe wx and rig and 73!This was OK when I was a shy kid, but this is a one to one communication medium. Maybe this is one reason the hobby is stagnating. How many of these QSO's can you take? Admittedly things are better on the phone bands, but us cw'ers pride ourselves on our copying and sending abilities. Lets use them to communicate something interesting. I say lets try ST2NH's idea. Maybe "TOI" will become as common as "RST".

I agree with the above comments. It is hard to tell one's non-ham friends about some cool country one spoke to, and then when they ask what did you say, to have to answer, "not much" is not a good thing. I think that the idea of a TOI as part of one's regular exchange is a great thing, and I am going to add it to all of my QSO's. Lets hope this is the start of something new in ham radio. By the way, my TOI's are music (guitar), and sailing (or boats in general).

Gregg

I fully agree. I never thought, when I got my lisence, that my new hobby would lead me to such pursuits as paragliding, dog mushing and mountain climbing. If you are open to it this hobby will lead you to adventure!

I think it's a good idea. As a QRP CW terrorist, I don't often get a 599. I homebrew my gear so on a good day it's more like 337 but that's another story. But I like the sport of prying it out of them. One particular thrill for me is to spot a genuine old timer. Octogenarian or better. You know the ones... a bit shaky with the key, but a few telltail American Morse characters thrown in there. When I hear that, I jump on the old coot like a ton of bricks. Sometimes you really have to beat them over the head, pummel them a bit but then it starts to flow. The keying gets more firm, the timing starts to return. I whip out the crowbar and whack 'em upside the head. Grab his arm and twist it behind the ol' geezer's back... Then it really starts to flow. That staccato music drip becomes a torrent. Before long and after a few slaps across the face, there it is... 30WPM of flawless syphonic Morse. 15 minutes into the battle and he starts fighting back. "Take that punk!" Another 5 minutes later and we're in a full break in QSK slugfest. A short while later a mutual respect develops. It's a no-holds-barred life story now with full emotion. "Ha!! Gotcha Gramps!"

His youth, his family, his career, his retirement. Love won and love lost. The pranks he played on the job. A kitten he saved behind the tool shed and gave to this daughter. The death of his best friend or worse... his child. The triumphs of a lifetime and the solitude of his later years. I ultimately lose the battle when my tears short out my key.

I just tangled brass with a railroad telegrapher. There is nothing finer on God's green earth...

Dear Mr./Mrs./Ms. Anonymous:

The last thing we need on the bands now is more things for people to fight about. Let's get everybody on the same page and then we'll have time to do this. If we don't stop fighting among ourselves, we'll be fighting for our frequencies. Reid WI3K

No offense Reid but just what the heck are you talking about? Post to the wrong forum or something? You lost me there...

Well I just read all the comments on the subject of "TOI". This is a great idea. I have been a ham for 42 years and find that on CW on some of the bands you can find a good rag chew anytime you want. There is nothing more rewarding than to set and have a nice informative QSO with someone from a DX location.
One of the comments on this subject mentioned having a section for contests as there is for CW. Sounds great to me.trying to get on for a chat with a fellow ham on contest weekend is near impossible.
Take care and 73 Virg W0MVR
P.S. TOI CW, Vintage Equipment. Some DXing Fishing Hunting.

Great idea Dr.Omar. I usually use the family TOI. Asking a contact about the family always does the trick for me, wife, kids, grandkids, brothers, sisters, and parents. We all have them, and I have seldom met a man or woman on or off the air who did not love talking about them.
