EX-HAM GETS JAIL, PROBATION FOR UNLICENSED OPERATION
Former amateur Richard Allen Burton this week was sentenced to three months
in jail and one year's probation for unlicensed operation of a radio
transmitter. Burton also must undergo psychological treatment.
Burton was sentenced January 22. The FCC says he'd been operating without a
license on repeaters in Southern California. Burton is scheduled to report
to the US Marshal's office on February 26 to begin serving his jail term. He
has been free on $20,000 bond.
Formerly WB6JAC, Burton, lost his General ticket in 1981 as a result of
unspecified violations. Since then, he's racked up a lengthy history of
alleged unlicensed operation, most or all of it on amateur frequencies. He
has served jail time and probation as a result of earlier convictions.
Burton was arrested last August 5 following his indictment by a federal
grand jury in California. He faced six felony counts of violating the
Communications Act of 1934.

Well done by the FCC!!
I think that also the FCC and Mr. Riley Hollingsworth will like to catch a fish like this guy, who is posting an auction for VERY BIG 11 meter linear amplifier on Yahoo Auctions, please check the add and pass on the info.
http://page.auctions.yahoo.com/auction/48826912
I was told that the FCC is watching what is going on on the internet auction sites and looking for illegal equipment.

I'm sure glad that it wasn't an eleven meter operator. I'm tired of seeing hams constantly slam those guys, especially when most of them aren't half as bad as they're made out to be. Guys like this fellow, Burton, and those running amps, like the previous poster mentioned, give a bad rep to many. Good work FCC.

Mr. Burton has received a relatively "light" sentence considering how flagrant his crimes were and his disregard for all the warnings that he has received throughout the years of his operating. I think that the hams that encouraged and "purpetuated" his illegal operations by talking to him after he had lost his license, should be considered "accessories" to these crimes. This list should include control operators and web masters which sensationalize these antics by acknowledging such behavior and actually posting Mr. Burton's name and picture on its web-site. Disgusting.

Wasn't this site intended for Licensed Amateur Radio Operators?
I ask because now we have some "Freebanders" like Alan who posted above, that are members of the site.
If the hams in South America are happy and can get along with CBers and Freebanders that's fine, but don't expect that US hams will do the same if they operate ilegal, sometimes you don't need to know the lenguage to find out that somebody in other country is operating ilegally, specially if you hear SSB and AM on the lower 10 meter band, just hear the echos, roger beeps and the jargon.
ITU region II also covers South America, so the same band plans rule for US and Latin American countries, and as far as I know no Latin American country is giving the 10 meter band away for CBers and Freebanders. Actually it will never happen.

Dear Mr./Ms. Anonymous,
I'm not a licensed amateur and I belong to this site. I'm not really sure what the message is that you're trying to convey. If it's an attempt to troll, too bad. If not, perhaps this may help.
"Wasn't this site intended for Licensed Amateur Radio Operators?"
I believe this site is intended for licensed amateurs as well as all who are interested in learning about amateur radio. I assume you've read this chap's bio as you make reference to "selected" points of detail. If you're still unclear, contact eham...I did.
"I ask because now we have some "Freebanders" like Alan who posted above, that are members of the site."
Did he say he was a freebander?...I must've missed that. Was this something you perceived as "inferred?"
"If the hams in South America are happy and can get along with CBers and Freebanders that's fine, but don't expect that US hams will do the same if they operate ilegal, sometimes you don't need to know the lenguage to find out that somebody in other country is operating ilegally, specially if you hear SSB and AM on the lower 10 meter band, just hear the echos, roger beeps and the jargon."
Re. first statement, yes that IS fine(cooperation and learning) and it is too much to expect. Re. second statement, point taken re. lid activity on 10m, etc...but what does this have to do with this guy.
"ITU region II also covers South America, so the same band plans rule for US and Latin American countries, and as far as I know no Latin American country is giving the 10 meter band away for CBers and Freebanders. Actually it will never happen."
Re-read and this time, comprehend and think before you reply.
I hope you don't misconstrue my post, it is not an attack on you. It is merely an attempt to understand an overt expression of mean-spirited exclusion. Alan has shown that he wants to get a ham(US) ticket, learn, and supports the FCC's efforts. Why not drop him an e-mail, at least he stood by his words and didn't post anonymously.

Well Richard did it again.... But this is most interesting - the FCC goes after the easy marks for the biggest splash.... Richard has problems and he was sold down the river by is old HAM friends like Arny who loaned him his HT against court order to see Richard get further into trouble... Yes, fellow HAMs helped Richard into trouble - Richard has a problem - he cannot pass up a pickle unless he pushes it... he is a communications alcoholic with an upstairs problem. He's needed help for years and he needs to get away from the HAM peers that gode him into getting on the air.... What this story doesn't tell you is that Richard went CLEAN after is last stay and his near BUST on New Years eve 1984! He did his time and stayed CLEAN then after his probation was over he took the test and past it - but the FCC refused to grant him a license on teh grounds of past convictions - that he did his time for. After that the peers and the addiction took over and the FCC was able to nab him again in an easy bust and get all this favorable news print.
Why do I know this - I was part of the special FCC RDF Aux in 1984, and I busted him in is green caddy and chased him in my car. He thought my passenger was Larry Guy and the next morning Richard handed his borrowed radios over to his attorney figuring he was nailed and going back to jail that he just left two weeks prior. Richard was an easy RDF target sitting behind the Jack-in-the-Box in Rowland Hts. CA... Why was he on the air - well his good friend and buddy Arny invited Richard to a New Years Eve party but decided at the last minute to not tell him the location - Richard was lonely and did the only thing Richard knows to entertain himself - talk. It was wrong but he was wronged by many - especially Arny, who walked away with no scares from his contemptuous actions - real good HAM buddy.
I did not hear Richard's exploits of the initial 1980's trouble. But now knowing the players involved much of it was trumped up and a certian HAM lawyer (now silent key) who really blew it out of proportion but due to being a disgruntalled "big mouth lawyer" he scared the FCC into action. Richard can be very crude, vulger, rude, obnoxtious but so can most of us. Richards biggest crime is he wants to part of the group.
Now FCC go after the REAL 2m problem in LA not JUST the easy fish that give you and the ARRL easy press coverage!

Thanks Bert,
I got your e-mail and I've revised my bio to ensure no further misunderstandings. I'll order the CW CD today, sounds like a good deal. I'll be taking the tech exam next weekend and I'd like to get my CSCE so I can get on 10 meter phone too. Sad to say that I think I'll have to keep my 11 meter interests to myself to avoid any malevolent behavior. Thanks for the info and the "heads up." 73.

Well there you are, go for it Alan! Might be a few out there who would not be afraid to tell you they
probably got their start fooling around on 11M too. I did in the early years but had enough HAM friends to encourage me to get my ticket. I'm very greatfull for that and have tried to continue that in my
own efforts. Good luck, you'll do just fine....

hasta pronto

They are speaking of linear amplifiers sold to and used by CB operators. Those amps cause the CB user to violate the law by exceeding the legal transmission power allowed for CB users.

More in detail the Amplifiers are specturally dirty and poorly designed, more of a TVI Oscillator, these cheap amps are Illeagle to use on 11M. BC and are considered banned from certification.
also the export radios were same way, also blow up finals .
in other words a peice of junk.
And the FCC should put the jerk in prison anyway maybe he can play with Bubba just depends how he makes some Good Buddies who like the Village People :-)

Well, that breaks up the Burton/Geritsen team, one down one to go. I like the bit about treatment, Bubba sure will have a psychological effect. Better yet, send in Leroy!
