Hmm. If I knew the UK's rules regarding this, I could make an opinion, but since I don't....

A sad story for sure. One the RSGB should take on.

Its amazing how this can be happening after apparently a lengthy installation time.

But, its Great Britain, not the US, so not much we can do.

Sounds worse than the CC&R police we have to deal with.

Man I feel sorry for that guy!

If I can work South Korea from the middle of the desert in New Mexico on 100 watts with a hamstick, I don't want to hear any whining about having to reduce the height of towers. This guy is making his problem out to be way bigger than it really is. Nobody is asking him to remove them, just reduce them. The fact that he is blind should play no part in any legal decision. That would be discrimination.

SAME HERE ON THE RULES, BUT IF A PETITION IS MADE UP I'LL GLADLY SIGN IT.

GOOD LUCK TO HIM!

How about some local UK hams go and help this guy straighten up his antennas, instead of throwing around blame? Isn't that the spirit of the hobby?

His antennas have been up 17 years! Basically the neighbors are saying the antennas are unsightly. Didn't keep them from moving into the neighborhood in the first place.

"Anti Social Behaviour Order"

Do the enforcers wear brown shirts like the people Britain fought against in WWII?????

Maybe the Brit's have it backwards - and should serve Robin Wood's neighbors with the ASBO.

Sadly ironic that the complaint about the blind ham is his antennas are "unsightly"

It would be like me complaining that Stevie Wonder's new album isn't "visionary"

"Read Daren2000's comment on this!"

That dude is a stroke, however, there should be actions taken if the ham in question broke the rules and extended his antennas onto property other than his own. It only makes the rest of us look bad.

Hearing about all the cases of neighbors crying "wolf", however, I think the neighbors should have to prove their allegations of interference. Did they even approach him to begin with? I think they just don't want to see his antennas.

If he's blind, I'm wondering if he even did the antenna work. He's not getting much sympathy in the comments to the article on the link.
If you haven't seen the typical English yard, check out a few home improvement shows on BBC America. I don't doubt someone extending something across an alley, er, street. Being Britannia, none of us should be surprised if a town council's decision lacks logic. I'm sure nobody there is.
Time to go stealthy.

Me thinks he is playing with your ego.

I checked into this article, as so many before, that were playing on the world hams said tisk tisk.

No instead I find that he is described as a arogant handicapped person who enjoys letting others know not to mess with him because he is blind.

Seems to me that the neighbors are fed up with him invading their space/yard/garden. Seems that the minister has had enough also of his ego.

Its not the radio that they are complaining about but, the man and his attitude towards the community. (see where he says he talks to people far away... wonder why?)

He has gone byond civil means. He has threatened others around him that if he doesn't get his way (like a spoiled child) he will make it known that they are discriminating against him.

This didn't work. So now he is going to court. Got a lawyer and all to fight the local people who have had enough of his rantings and ravings, keeping them up all hours of the night with his noise because he doesn't work. (must be on what is like our welfare)

When we read on about the article in the brits paper it seems that he has been asked several times to restrict his operations so others can sleep and work. (must be in real close quarters like so many of their houses over their)

He rudely told them to "BUZZ OFF" (must be their way of saying our four letter words of wisdom)

So it seem our nice ham is somewhat of a dr jeckle and Mr. hyde... and the locals are fed up with him.

Not a good showing for a ham operator.. one might conclude him similar to our jammers and rude oprerators over here. (we americans live in the wild west that has indians... and have guns so this kind of thing doesn't fly??)

Sorry after reading the news, I think he is duping all of us into feeling sympthy for him. In fact he is the one that should have his bottom whacked for not cooperating.

It appears that the neighbors have had it with him, his attitued and his radios. It appears that the court is their last salvation from this... person.

We would do the same here.. if one came into your back yard to put up his antenna without asking permission claiming he was handicapped and you can't do anything to stop him. Then threaten you with discrimination and bias. Then go home and make radio noises because he is on welfare or disability, all night long so you can't sleep, making you tired and effecting your performance.

We too would go to court and get his nose bent a different direction.

That is not being a ham operator, more its being a pain in the rear.

As madona said in the movie argentina, don't cry for me.. I don't feel sorry for him either. I am sure if he stay'ed in his own yard they would be much happier.

I'll bet right after the judge orders his antennas down this person gets a large size boom box and sits out in the yard with it going full blast playing rap music 24/7. Just to piss the neighbors off and make it pay back for messing with him.

Allowing the local political hacks to handle interference problems is akin to allowing trash collectors to perform neurosurgery. Technically competent politicians are more scarce then "Hope Diamonds". This type of tripe makes me appreciate a strong federal government.

God save this MAN!

PS:Any doubts about the validity of motivation for the American Revolution against Britain have been put to bed.

If DXR2's post is correct, he needs saving from himself. He should be held to the law where he is, but he's making it doubly difficult if he's stirring up the hornets.

Jim,

This is the UK not the USA. They don't have PRB-1.

"But the council is taking him to court to try and force him to reduce the size of the aerials, meaning he will no longer be able to communicate with his friends around the world"

Welcome to the democrat/socialist philosophy of:
"the government can tell you what you can and cannot do"

If we in the US are not careful, we too will wind up living in an all-powerful "nanny state".

I'm not a bit sorry we dumped that tea in the harbor. Having worked with many of them, I know there are some fine people in the UK, but some of them have odd ideas about property rights. Unfortunately, there are a few on this side of the pond that do too.
Let us be vigilant and keep our powder dry to protect what freedoms we have left.

I long for the day when I can live next to a guy with 5 or 600 pounds of aluminum and guy wires in the air next to my property!! As for the argument that the neighbors knew when they moved in? We have no idea who was there first. He likely didn't put all this up in one day, it probably grew over the years. There is no indication that the one he put up yesterday is his last. I think neighbors have every right to complain if their neighborhood is turned into what looks like an industrial zone. Some people get "carried away" with everything they do.

Yes, I've had and will have again, a tower in the back yard and a couple of wire antennas. I won't subject my neighbors to 2 or 3 towers and stacked mono-banders though, I don't think it's right. I'd move to place more conducive to antenna farming.

Like so many things in life, it's about perspective. That this guy is blind has absolutly nothing to do with the issue. If your neighbor was deaf, would you mind him playing a super loud car radio just to get the low frequency massage for his tired muscles?

by K1CJS on May 16, 2008 Mail this to a friend!
The guy is a blind ham--and it seems he's playing that card for all it's worth. If he would have kept the antennas on his own property, I would be more inclined to accept his explanations, but if those antennas cross public ways and the cables are crossing public footpaths (which is a safety issue itself), what the heck does he expect?

Another item is he says the aerials have been up 17 years, but the neighbors say they are constantly being revised and added to. Which is the case? If they're being revised and added to, they haven't been up there 17 years.

I don't intend this as picking on the handicapped, but this case has an unmistakable odor to it--it seems that the 'look at me I'm handicapped' syndrome is being played at for all its worth here.

I think Chris has a pretty valid point here. It seems we are hearing the extremes of both sides of the story and the truth is likely to be somewhere in the middle.

Physically infringing on property that is not owned by the ham in question is probably what will be his undoing.

It's a pity that the lack of cooperation prevails. Probably the only ones that will 'win' will be the lawyers.

i am indeed sad to see this and being an avid contester i have been many times harassed by the lake station indiana police who havent a clue to what amateur radio is and even 1 neighbor with rabbit ears for his antenna who cut 3 of the cables while i was operating. It seems they all want us around to be able to save them..but in the interim they want us not to operate and/or wont allow us the means to operate.Yes indeed these are very sad times for the world and america & its not just radio either and i am glad my time here is about over!73,Kb9ygd.

See his video:

http://www.itvlocal.com/central/news/?player=CEN_News_26&void=67746

His towers are short masts. I personally don't see a problem, but I do realize the cameras don't show everything. After seeing the video my feelings have turned pi radians in phase and hope this guy the best.

I am a British expat, but only got my license when i relocated to the US last year.

However having viewed the video in the previous comment, I can say that if the fact that he doesn't transmit unless it's in the middle of the night means that most of the allegations seem to be unfounded.

It is entirely possible that the residents of Mr Woods neighborhood may simply have a grudge due their impression of the ugliness of the antenna system. They have probably moaned and complained until the local Council took notice and enforced the letter of the law in terms of planning regulations. That sort of manipulation happens all the time in local politics in the UK because some people band together and make enough noise that the local Council will do something just to make it go away.

I believe that it is likely there is fault on both sides, but that there is a solution which can accommodate all parties. That being said, my gut tells me that the only way for this to be fairly resolved is for the RSGB to get involved and help resolve the allegations of interference with real testing and facts. Then help Mr. Woods defend his rights in the courts.

I watched the news video and I dont see what the big problem is with the mans antennas. They arent exactly beautiful, but Ive seen much worse. He also claims he doesnt transmit until the very early morning hours to avoid RFI and TVI issues. Unless theres more to the story, Id have to say his neighbors are just a bunch of vindictive AH's.
