Dayton Update:
Crowds have been enthusiastic on this, the opening day of the Dayton
Hamvention. Thursday evening featured the ARRL Donor Recognition
Reception that honored those who have made a significant financial
contribution to the ARRL. If you didn't make it to Dayton this year (or
even if you did), you can follow the action on the ARRL blog
http://www.arrl.org/blog/Dayton%20and%20ARRL%20Expo. An update will
also be posted to the ARRL Web site during the weekend, and a
comprehensive article will appear in the July issue of QST.

I again enjoyed both the flea market and the inside vendors. Not all the outside vendor spaces were taken this year, probably because of the cost of gas, but there was still plenty of interesting stuff to browse. Inside, all the major vendors were there, and people seemed to be buying -- though we'll have to hear from the vendors to know how this Hamvention measures up financially for them.
There were lots of interesting forums going on at the same time, and of course many different special events each evening, for people with all kinds of interests including QRP, Collins, etc.
We shouldn't underestimate the impact of fuel prices and economic conditions on our hobby and especially ham fests, but I don't feel this has impacted the quality of the experience this year at Dayton.

Another Hamvention and nothing new from Kenwood. They must be designing something really unexpected to be quiet so long. Their product line is seriously lacking. They recently came out with a good VHF/UHF mobile...but both the TS-480 and TS-2000 have been out for a couple of years. Icom and Yaesu are running circles around them. I used to be a die hard Kenwood fan in the 80's. Now, every radio I own is from Icom...except for my Yaesu FT-8900.
