The first sentence says it all. Ham Radio is priceless when all else fails.
When all else is working I use Skype to natter with family and friends and Echolink / IRLP Repeaters for Ham friends Worldwide.

Holding our own, eh? Well, when the Inet is working, we can all aggravate our advanced carpell tunnel syndrome by keyboarding away like so many others out there with Internetitis.
So, are we dying off as a hobby? Will 650,000 or so of us attrition off to be replaced by Internetites?
Maybe diminish in numbers somewhat, but, the thrill of using QRP power, a battery and a wire to talk to someone half a globe away is something worth achieving to many. My son waited until he was 22 to get his license, since at that point in his life he became interested in serious out back treks and the availability of low power gear (FT-817) intrigued him.
He couldn't do Internet from 50 miles from nowhere with just a backpack. But, he could do what I described above. Or, summon help if he or someone else needed it.
HR will always be of interest to many folks, irrespective of the Internet.
