ARLX008 FCC Vanity Call Sign Fees to Increase September 25

On August 11, the Federal Communications Commission announced that the cost of an Amateur Radio vanity call sign will increase 60 cents, from $11.70 to $12.30. Now that notice of the increase has been published in the Federal Register, the increase will take effect in 30 days, September 25, 2008.

The FCC is authorized by the Communications Act of 1934, As Amended, to collect vanity call sign fees to recover the costs associated with that program. The vanity call sign regulatory fee is payable not only when applying for a new vanity call sign, but also upon renewing a vanity call sign for a new 10 year term.

The notice in the August 26, 2008 Federal Register, entitled "Assessment and Collection of Regulatory Fees for Fiscal Year 2008," includes regulatory fees expected to recover a total of $312,000,000 during FY2008, encompassing all the services the FCC regulates.

More information is available at, http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2008/08/11/10257/?nc=1.

So a 60 cent change in a fee that only some hams will deal with in their lives.

Is this worth inclusion on the ARRL home page or even this site?

A REALLY slow news day or year in Ham Radio.

The increase in fees is not earth shaking, but the subject of vanity call signs is a good one. If the thread is maintained, some interesting reasons for getting a vanity call sign and some good examples and suggestions could be forthcoming.

For example: My privious call sign was NJ2IT. I picked that one because I worked for ITT in New Jersey. It seemed pretty good. BUT ....Not long after when I got to using a certain repeater on two meters on a daily basis, I realized that it was not a great choice. The repeater was maintained by the amateur radio club at New Jersey Institute of Technology or NJIT. Believe it or not, while using the repeater, I had people asking me if I was the repeater! I started looking for another call sign.

Now my call sign is nice and short for CW, and it is also a palindrome (reads forward or backward) and is a harmless acronym for artificial intelligence to information access or ai to ia (ai2ia).

Greetings,

Man, I'm really glad that I beat the deadline!!! Whew, a whole $.60. I doubt that I could afford it.

The increase will likely be totally swamped by the cost of advertising the increase.

I'll have to forgo some of the pleasures of life to afford the renewal in 10 years.

73, Herb

Still a heck-of-a deal. When I got my license I thought I would have to pay more than $12 a YEAR for a vanity call sign.

Had trouble remembering and even pronouncing the sequential one I was issued.

It's never too late to learn.

Why are ham emcomms needed? Why are state militias and The National Guard needed? Why is the Red Cross and the Salvation Army needed?

Why? Because big government and socialist control of everything is always corrupt and always fails. What is RESPONSIBILITY? Isn't the very idea of responsibility tied up with the individual? Can an organization as a whole ever be held responsible for anything? Do great ideas spring from organizations or individuals? INDIVIDUALS who volunteer built this great nation from the Colonial Minutemen to, yes, the amateur radio emcomm volunteers. Each individual is prepared and DEDICATED to do his individual best!

Do you want to destroy any worthwhile community cause? Be a socialist and throw government money at it. Can the "government" grow wheat? Can the "government" schools teach better than the private schools? Why do all the public school teachers send their own little darlings to private schools? How about the children of the politicians?
Don't you get it by now? We the people, by the Grace of God, free and INDEPENDENT. We get the job done, not the bureaucrats. Wake up!
