CQ Communications Acquires WorldRadio Magazine:

NEWS RELEASE

For release: November 12, 2008

CQ COMMUNICATIONS ACQUIRES WORLDRADIO MAGAZINE

(Hicksville, NY and Sacramento, CA, November 12, 2008) -- CQ Communications, Inc. has acquired WorldRadio magazine, CQ Publisher Dick Ross, K2MGA and WorldRadio Publisher Armond Noble, N6WR, announced jointly today. CQ, based in Hicksville, New York, currently publishes CQ Amateur Radio, CQ VHF and Popular Communications magazines.

WorldRadio, based in Sacramento, California, has been published monthly since July, 1971, with a primary focus on the human side of ham radio. CQ, a general-interest ham radio magazine best known for its support of DXing and contesting, has been in print since January, 1945.

Armond Noble, N6WR, Publisher of WorldRadio, said that at the age of 74 the time had come for him to retire. "I wanted to be sure that WorldRadio found a good home, and that our readers would continue to be served by an independent voice in amateur radio," Noble said.

CQ Publisher Dick Ross, K2MGA, said, "WorldRadio has filled an important niche in our hobby for nearly four decades. We welcome WorldRadio's readers to the CQ family, and we look forward to meeting their needs for many years to come."

Current plans call for WorldRadio to continue to be published online as part of the CQ family of magazines, with Editor Nancy Kott, WZ8C, continuing in that position. WorldRadio subscribers will also have their subscriptions transferred to CQ magazine. Readers will be notified of details as plans are finalized.

Well there we go, if you want to keep on getting World Radio prepare to be raped. I cant believe people keep CQ's high prices. I did for ahwile both CQ and Pop Comm. I cant justify paying there high prices in this economy.
I suppose the current economy will justify another price hike soon for the CQ publications group.

Your comments on World Radio and CQ Magazine being high priced appear to be just more of the same cheapskate ham blather. I have been subscribing to both for may years and find them to be worth the modest price they command.

The big question is what are they going to do with the lifetime subscribers to World Radio? Hopefully the subscription transfers in its entirety.

I am a CQ subscriber and I think it is a great magazine. My biggest problem is not having the time to read it. Every issue has a few articles that explain how things work and other basics that I need to review because I can always learn something new. I've been a ham since 1972 but until a few months ago did not know very well how switching power supplies worked. Well, there was an article in CQ that explained them. CQ also serves as an alternative to QST and anyone in the publishing business will tell you that all periodicals need competition in order to be good.

I think all ham magazines are as good as the state of ham radio. They are dependent to some degree on contributions from ham readers. All magazines are more expensive now and in fact, we are probably going to see the end of print magazines over the next ten or twenty years as we know them anyway. I never subscribed to World Radio but enjoyed looking at it, especially in its big tabloid newspaper days. I'm glad it's not entirely going away.

W2GLA Im really bummed that a great mag, world radio is going to CQ. I like the mag as is, and you gotta admit the price is right. Plenty of content and lots of ads I like looking at ads... Ill buy from ads in the mags. CQ very glossy lots of ads.... If you saw what cq gets for the commercial ad fees adding on to the purchase price you might be surprised. I am a ARRL member. I really feel I get more for my money including QST. am I a cheapskate? as the economy flounders that is a compliment. At one time I had a $50.000 dollar Station.
I suppose I am around $5.000 right now. I just bought a house, paid cash for it. I see harder times coming to us all in the US. I gotta keep life in balance, a lot of hams don’t think about that.
They will forgo cloths for the kids so thay can make credit card payments for a new Icom, Yaesu or Kenwood.
We all have a right to free speech and our opinions.
To sum it up: I feel sad that WR is being sucked up by CQ.
W2GLA I respect your opinion as I do all other opinions here.

In reality I spend most of my ham radio reading time here on EHam. I hope they don’t sell out to CQ or the ARRL for that mater.

BTW. I never said World Radio was high priced. I said CQ and the asso mags are. If anything WR has under valued themselves for years

"World Radio and CQ Magazine being high priced appear to be just more of the same cheapskate ham blather."

Now lets all go have fun.

I believe my WorldRadio subscription is good through 10/10, and my CQ subscription nearly the same. So, now what happens? Do I lose the $$ which I already paid WorldRadio, or does this $$ get "tacked on" to the end of the CQ subscription? My personal pick of the two mags is WR, but CQ is a close 2nd with QST third. Just rambling...... 73, Gene AFcY

The above announcement failed to mention it will cease to be a print publication, moving to online only. It's on the ARRL website.

I have worked with Worldradio as a writer of articles since the 1980s and they were very good to work with when I wrote the book for them, Six Meters, a Guide to the Magic Band for them in 1994, followed by three more editions. I will miss working with them very much!

I agree with WB2AMU. I also am a former columnist for Worldradio and have had 3 books published by them. Armond and Helen have been great to work with and the magazine filled a niche in the world of amateur radio.

On the other hand both Armond and Helen deserve a happy and healthy retirement and I wish them that.

OK. I am a writer for Worldradio so maybe I can help clarify things a bit.

1: Worldradio is NOT going away. However, it will soon be an Internet-only "e-zine." That means only the paper edition will disappear -- not the magazine. If you have a computer, a web browser, an Internet connection and are reading this posting, you will still be able to read each monthly edition of Worldradio.

2: Those of you who subscribe to Worldradio will still receive a paper magazine, but it will be CQ instead of Worldradio. You will also have Worldradio on the Internet, so you are literally getting 2 magazines for what you paid to get one. In today's economy, that's not a bad deal.

3: Worldradio and CQ are totally different magazines. CQ is a general interest magazine that covers every aspect of ham radio with an emphasis on the operational and technical aspects of the hobby. Since its inception in 1973, Worldradio has been "personality driven" -- much like the old days of "Top 40 radio" where you really felt that the disk jockeys were personal friends. Those of us who write for Worldradio try to do so as if we were writing a letter directly to each of you. With a acquisition of Worldradio by CQ, you now have the best of both genre's.

4: To my knowledge, all of the writers who have been with the paper edition of Worldradio will be in the Internet version. While there will be some attrition from time to time with new faces replacing those you have come to know, thats to be expected. Right now, I know of no columnist who is planning to leave Worldradio because of the change in ownership.

5: Possibly the most important aspect of this change in ownership is who has acquired the magazine. Its hams who love ham radio!

Since its inception all of the principals at CQ have been -- and are today -- active radio amateurs.

CQ Magazine began publication in January 1945 when I was age 2 years and 11 months. I did not discover it until just before getting my first call -- WA2HVK -- in 1959. I have been a dedicated reader ever since.

In its early days CQ was owned by the Cowan family as Cowan Publishing. Dick Cowan, WA2LRO, was one of the top 6 meter DX'ers of the 1960's. (I know because my buddy Larry Levy WA2INM and I used to vye against him to work DX on AM back then.)

When the magazine was sold to its current owner, he too was and is an active radio amateur -- Dick Ross, K2MGA. With Dick when the transition took place was Alan Dorhoffer, K2EEK, who was CQ's editor for most of his adult life. When Al passed on in July 1999, his replacement was CQ's current Editor Rich Moseson, W2VU, who gave up a career with CBS TV Network News to devote himself to the hobby and service he truly loves as much as any of you do.

I have known all of these people most of my life and can attest of their sincere loyalty and devotion to ham radio.

Simply stated, the people at CQ are as devoted to the hobby as anyone at Worldradio ever was -- and is. Thats why CQ sponsors some of the worlds most respected contests. Its why they support specialty publications like the quarterly CQ-VHF. And it is also why they spend thousands of dollars every year in co-underwriting (with Vertex - Standard / Yaesu) of the Young Ham of the Year Award that we at Amateur Radio Newsline created and sponsor.

CQ Publishing and the folks in the office on Newbridge Road in Hicksville NY are a lot more than business people. They are a group who are devoted to the hobby and people whom I admire. We are very lucky to have them.

6: In about 2 weeks we will be celebrating "Thanksgiving." Two of the things we need to be thankful for is that Armond Noble N6WR and his wife Helen devoted 35 years of their lives to bringing Worldradio to all of you. And the other is that it will still be here for years to come, albeit in a slightly different format thanks to Dick Ross K2MGA and the people at CQ. We are very lucky that we have people such as these as a part of our world of amateur radio.

Regards,

Bill Pasternak, WA6ITF

Well, answered every question except that I paid for a lifetime subscription, I guess that means the lifetime has expired. Shucks. I bought in only three years ago. Oh, well, PT Barnum was right again.

Even though Worldradio will be in electronic format, it is now owned by CQ and I am sure CQ magazine will have some say over what is printed. The one magazine that actually supported licensing standards will be sacrificed to the one that supports no licensing standards.

I am very sad that WorldRadio is going away in its hardcopy version. I enjoyed being able to get away from the computer to read it...it just won't be the same reading it online.

I'm a lifetime subscriber too. I wonder how many issues of CQ I will get in the deal. Somehow I doubt that it will be a lifetime subscription. Curses!

With all said about the sales of WR6WR - World Radio-, the bottom line is; had all of you that made comment supported this fine publication it would still be with us. As any magazine it needed income from subscriptions and advertising, neither of which, I suspect, was forthcoming from readers or advertisers. The mind set today is cheap or free. To bad that the Radio Amateur Community did not support the World Radio venture. It will be our loss not World Radio's. CQ will not continue the publication for long, it is just a case of big fish swallowing little fish. Sorry HAMS, we all loose!
