Of course you could just go to the one on May 29 at the Expo Center, and then on May 30 to the one at the Carnival Grounds.

Heres a little secret thats not so secret. Even if there are two events held, the only one that will succeed will be the one that pulls the first line big name exhibitors. That's the main reason most people attend any hamfest.
Watch to see where the likes of Alinco, Icom, Kenwood, Yaesu and the major retailers say that they are going. Chances are that is the show that will likely still be around 12 months from now.

The unfortunate part is that those who want to attend the fest are left wondering about a few things:
- Where is the darned event?
- Is it a single day, or two? Makes a difference for people trying to plan travel.
- Can the Rochester ham community really be that dysfunctional? (But then again, Syracuse has it's share of oddities as well among hams who are bit zealous when it comes to "possessing" events).
Bottom line- the confusion is not good for anyone.

Whats new? This has been going on since "what hath God wrought" went out over the air, hams stepping on each others "cahones" since day one. Childish, but I've heard worse. Anyway, the good thing is there will be two hamfests back to back, enjoy!!

I used to be on the hamfest comittee back in 1983 to 1988 and there was no "turf war" then. The workup for the hamfest at the Monroe County Fairgrounds was sometimes hard, sometimes easy depending upon the amount of work our fellow hams were willing to do. The job did get done on time, though. The hamfest was always a big success, and made a lot of money for the Club. I was KA2HLW back then, had two great mentors: Burt Johns WA2IYA, and Jim Taylor who worked out of the Buffalo FCC Field office, and the old monitoring station near Canandaigua, N.Y. AND the Rochester Hamfest was the second only to Dayton, OH hamfest. I wish we had a hamfest like that down here in Montgomery, Al. Where or how did this stupid turf war start? I have been out of contact with anybody in the Rochester area ever since Burt became a silent key in 1993 (I believe). Who started it? Was it the repeater group, or the HF group? They probably split into two clubs, and there the trouble stated, I'll bet. Knowing human nature like I do, I bet that was how it started. Somebody "enlighten me" please?
Best Regards,
Fred - W4FJF.

ARRL's lists this year's Rochester fest on this link: http://www.arrl.org/sections/WNY.html
Would be nice if the "bogus" site would be taken down.

Why doesn't the Carnival group move to the parking lot outside the other one?

I think the two clubs should have a "Feats of Strength" contest. The winning team gets to hold the ham-fest.
Make sure the contest starts AFTER the "Airing of Grievances".

I serve on the Board of Rochester Amateur Radio Association and also the Hamfest Committee. If perhaps the "reporter" who wrote this uninformed article had done his research this would not be an issue. I copy our club president's response to him:
Mr. Badman,
Referring to your article in the Syracuse Post-Standard yesterday:
http://www.syracuse.com/poststandard/stories/index.ssf?/base/living-6/1231927156198280.xml&coll=1
You mention two websites with “conflicting” information about the Rochester Hamfest. However, you don’t mention that the contact information on one site is obsolete and disconnected, while the information on the other site (RochesterHam.org) is validated by the ARRL. You should verify your sources before you attempt to disseminate information. As a fellow amateur radio operator, you would have done the hobby more of a service by discovering the TRUTH and dispelling the rumors. Instead you did no research and only fostered the confusion. Shame on you.
The alternate website you referred to is maintained by K2HC, an individual that is no longer involved in the Hamfest. The Rochester Amateur Radio Assn. (75 year sponsor of the Rochester Hamfest) has no influence over what he posts on the internet. We have requested he remove the confusing content numerous times, each met with flat out refusal. It’s disappointing that someone who has put a great deal of effort into the event in the past, has taken up the position to confuse the public. This certainly demonstrates his disloyalty to the club, the event, and his fellow HAMS. If he is soliciting advance ticket sales, that would be fraud on his part, because according to officials at the Dome Arena he has not rented that facility.
You know what Mark Twain said: “If you don’t read the news paper, your uninformed. If you read the newspaper, your misinformed.”
Maybe you could enlighten your readers, and fellow HAMS with the TRUTH.
73,
Frank Schramm

President,

To which the reporter replies:
Mr. Schramm,
Lee, KI2K here. It's unfortunate, but in "checking my sources" (as you imply I didn't do)- I find two web sites claiming that they are theofficial public face of the Rochester Hamfest.
In checking the
registrations for the domain names (the web servers), one belongs to the group who has been the long-running official site for the fest (rochesterhamfest.org). And one belongs to you, by name. I'm not looking to spread rumors, as you imply. I am reporting the confusion surrounding the fest, period. And IT IS confusing as the long-running, now ex-sponsor of the fest has a website that very much feels current.
And I agree with your suggestion that someone should be providing some clarity about this event- but that task falls to you Rochester radio folks, and you're simply not getting it done.
So... in your own words, shame on you.
The truth is, there is confusion about who is holding it, where it will be, and how many days it will run. That is the truth, regardless of the ARRL backing RARA- no one should have to conduct an investigation to
find out which fest plan is real and which is not.
RARA needs to negotiate with whoever is the human being behind rochesterhamfest.org and get them to either pull their confusing website, or to post a link to RARA's/your web site about the event.
That's the only resolution, and until that happens, to report that there is some confusion around the Rochester Hamfest is to report the truth.
At no point do I support false claims, or spread bad information- my point is that this is a weird situation and folks looking at both sites need to be careful what they read. That was the point of my article.
Period. Beyond that, I'm not an official mouthpiece for either side of the issue.
You quote Mr. Twain eloquently, but inappropriately.
To Joe Outsider, this is confusing. Reading the newspaper is irrelevant.
I put my writer hat away, and I'd just like to go to a good fest. The bonus would be that this weirdness is put to bed well ahead of it.
Respectfully-
Lee Badman
KI2K
And I do notice since you have been "called out" out on this, you're finally trying to provide some clarity- it's about time.

FYI- since I wrote the original article, let me update:
Both websites cited in my article now point to RARA's information, and so the primary source of this confusing situation has been eliminated.
For anyone looking for information from the outside- there should no longer be mixed messages available from the web.
