Icom Caveat

Icom Caveat

After helping several visitors to my site with various RFI problems, one very glaring, owner omission has once again reared its ugly head. Although I mention this on my web site, posting here on eham.net will garner a bigger audience, and hopefully save a few folks a lot of frustration.

The Icom IC-706 in its various forms, has become the most popular amateur transceiver ever! The IC-7000 is fast on its heels. One of the reasons for their popularity is their remoting capability. The remote mounting kit for both radios includes a mounting plate for the head (MB-63 for the 706, MB-105 for the 7000). The included interconnect cable is a 11.5 feet long (OPC-581 for the 706, OPC-1443 for the 7000). Longer cables (16.4 feet) are available for both. Over the years, Icom has included the remote kit with the transceiver as part of their sales promotion theme. In fact, as I write this, that is the case for the IC-7000.

Referring to page 10 in the 706 Owners Manual, and page 16 in the 7000 Owners Manual, are drawings depicting the installation procedure for the remote cable. The reproduction shown here if from the 7000 manual.

The screw depicted in these drawings is a metric 2 mm x 6 mm phillips head with very fine threads. It is included with the cable in a small, plastic envelope. This screw grounds the shield of the remote cable, as well as anchoring it to the body. Leaving it out can cause a host of RFI problems especially if you have common mode current flowing on the coax and/or antenna control cabling. Even if you aren't experiencing any specific problem, this screw should be installed.

Well Alan, how about that! I can see the metal collar in the screw hole. You just learn something new every day. Now where did I put that screw.

Thanks!

Ferrite beads on both ends of the separation cable, power cable, and speaker cable. Without them, key down with 50W on 40M and the radio would shut off.

Always read the instruction manual, and be sure you have a good reason not to follow it, if you decide to go your own way.

Very useful info!

Of course, for most male hams SOP is (1) don't read the instruction, (2) put it togehtehr, (3) try it, and (4) when problems arise wait for Alan's article in eHAM. Hi, hi.

You no longer need to worry about RFI......

His royal majesty, the messiah, the almighty Barack Hussein Obama will now take care of everything, from your mortgage, to your car payment, to all of your RFI problems.

The USSA (United Socialist States of America) has now been declaired. You no longer need handle any problem for yourself. Now, the government will handle everything for you.

If the manual says install the cable with the screw, then install it. Period. Icom will not go out of their way to explain what will happen if you don't in the owners manual, let alone the service manual. I am sure their engineers are all smiles when they get a complaint such as this. Yes, one screw can make a big difference!!!!

Moral of the story.............stoop to the level of the "wet behind the ears ham" and READ THE MANUAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Back when I was doing the GM Mr Goodwrench part of my life. We always had mechanics that would not put all the bolts back in the cars just because they thought they didn't need to be there. I figured if they didn't need them GM would have omitted them and saved themselves some coin. Since GM builds everything as inexpensive as possible that means that the engineers thought it is really needed. Why would Icom/Kenwood/Yaesu be any different? Besides, they know more about the radios than we do, since they are the ones who designed and built them.

There are a lot of really talented people on here with lots to share, so it's best to be ecouraging and uplifting of those who post something of value.

For those that may have lost their factory screw, it is the same as the fine-threaded screws used to mount most CD-ROMS inside computer cases.

Fortunately for YOU, the socialist motto is "From each according to his abilities; to each according to his needs." Hence, under our new socialist utopia, even political ignoramuses will have life's basic needs, for it is not their fault that they lack the abilty to contribute to society.

In your case, however, a brief stay in one of our re-education camps would likely be sufficient to provide you with the skill sets necessary to doing your part for the community. You can begin your re-education right now...just repeat after me: "I will not use ham radio forum threads dedicated to solving technical problems, for the purpose of posting fat-headed, politically illiterate belly-aches about the President."

Write that 10,000 times and your re-education will be complete.

don't you just love it.. they elected a man who did nothing in the senate to do nothing in the presidency except promote socialism and reward his buds

I am waiting for the trickle down effect of the ham radio bail out... a free icom in every stocking to help the ARIES be ready to save the US from invasion. Of course we won't have any guns or ammo but we will have icom 7000's to talk about it.

good article as always K0BG... keep up the good work most new hams need it.

Back to the subject !! I did read the instructions and have been passing on the info. While I have always found the screws I dropped I also have a couple of spares in my tool box !
Since both 706 and 7000 have been mentioned - the two 706 mics , HM-103 and HM-154T, can be used on the 7000 .I like the HM-154T because it's larger and more comfortable for my large hand.
DO NOT use the HM-151 of the 7000 on the 706. To do so would damage the radio !!!

Most remote headed radios need attention to RFI feed back into the main unit to prevent interfering with software defined (SDR) processing same as a computer near the operating position.
The KENWOOD TS 480 is one such unit. It uses ferrite clamp on chokes provided on external cables.
Page 6 and 7 of their manuel shows these for the various options.
Don't short cut not using them because if your antenna match is not good you can have issues.
Always use shielded cables even for the speaker and any keying leads to such places as the mic, linear and ALC feedback cables.

Here we go with the intollerant liberals!
So long as you post a political comment they agree with (its non-idiotic) and acceptable. But just as soon as you post something that angry, intollerant liberals disagree with, then its "idiotic" and unacceptable.

Political comments, whether left- or right- wing, smart or stupid, are inappropriate here. This is a ham thread, not a political one.

* People who continually post political crap here are announcing to the world that they cannot hold their own against political junkies on the premier liberal, moderate, and conservative blogs.

* It's easy to win arguments against people who don't think that you are worth an argument because they want to discuss ham radio instead of politics.

* Perhaps they've been banned from political sites because of bad behavior?

Congratulations. Epic fail.

I am entitled to my opinion. I've been minimizing my clicks recently just for this reason. In the future, I may click elsewhere.

You are not a very good business man. If you're going to be a tool for making the site owners rich by posting inane political crap that would embarrass thinking people, you should at least get paid for it. Persons who post relevant ham radio stuff don't expect to get paid -- after all, it's just a hobby to them.

Why is it liberals must personally insult anyone and everyone that disagrees with their narrow minded world view?

* I am not a liberal. You do not know me, so don't call me that.

* My opinion was that all political comments, irregardless of ideology, should be posted in political threads, not technical ones. There are plenty of other places for that stuff. I come here for ham radio, not politics, although that might change ...

* You could have perceived my comments as insulting, but in reality I was trying to be helpful. Instead of posting political diatribes here -- giving free money to the board owners for more clicks -- you could be doing something useful.

* In my final posting to this thread, I will actually make an on-topic comment ...

Alan: I own a 706MkIIG, and I've never had trouble with the remote head. I will keep your information in mind, to avoid future difficulties. Thanks.

Why do liberals think that their personal insults "help" people? I guess its because liberals view themselves as so SUPERIOR to others. Everybody that disagrees with liberal dogma is not a "thinking" person.
