If you haven't accessed the amateur-radio-related Usenet
newsgroups lately, things have much improved since the
last major eHam thread on the subject from 2006:
Amateur Radio Newsgroups: Total Meltdown
The new moderated discussion newsgroup,
rec.radio.amateur.moderated, has been going for nearly 3
years and over 3900 approved articles. The moderated
bulletin and announcement newsgroup, rec.radio.info, has
been reactivated, and carries a comprehensive collection
of available amateur radio news bulletins in English from
around the world, relayed immediately and automatically
when they are published by their sources.
Even the unmoderated discussion newsgroups have
improved greatly. Flooders, abusers, and other problem
users have been successfully discouraged or restricted
from posting. Some off-topic noise continues, but is easy
to steer around. Newsgroups and web blogs like these are
both useful resources, but Usenet newsgroups can be an
excellent supplement to blogs due to the following
notable advantages:
- The user can control the interface (choices of
newsreader software)
- killfiles
- threading
- unified, but distributed, discussion on a specific topic
- better searching
- better archiving
- less bandwidth
- rugged, distributed transport system that has been in
place for decades
If you have been away from newsgroups for a while,
please consider returning, and trying them out again.

Usenet went all to hell once people started cross-posting sex ads and material in the newsgroups. I used to love the newsgroups. A lot of good information was passed on these groups, but now with the internet revolution, newsgroups are basically a ghost of the past. Can't wait for the internet to come crashing down so maybe people will realize how good packet and BBS's actually were (albeit slow connection speeds, but the comms got through reliably).

Thanks for the heads up. Actually, I have been checking out newsgroups lately and there has been a definite improvement. I don't pull em up everyday, but I do at least weekly. Give the currenty moderated groups a chance. 73
