Yesterday I received word that Harry Helms W5HLH became a Silent Key on Sunday November 15, 2009 after a long battle with cancer. He was 57 years young.

Harry was an avid Ham and SWL and published a number of books on the the radio hobby over the years. I bought my share of his books.

I did not know Harry personally but he and I did exchange a number of private emails in 2008 and 2009 concerning his illness. I borrowed the following below from his Blog at http://harryhelmsblog.blogspot.com/2009/08/greetings-from-fort-mill-south-carolina.html .

.....I'm a book and magazine writer, editor, and publisher. I've written several books and numerous magazine articles. I was co-founder of LLH Technology Publishing (formerly HighText Publications), which was acquired by Elsevier in 2001.....

I have two books by Harry, All About Ham Radio and The Shortwave Listening Guide. Both were really great books. I have let several prospective hams borrow All About Ham Radio to help spur their interest in getting a ticket. Sad news to hear.

I recall many of his books on shortwave and Ham radio, I have many at home in my shack and always enjoyed his many comments on shortwave which drew me as many others did to Ham radio. Those mysterious blips and dahs were fun to hear and it got me encouraged. Ham and Shortwave is part of my daily routine and it gave me a chance to visit sites like KTWR,AWR on Guam and FEBC on Saipan..Thanks Harry you will be missed.

Click on the link to Harry's last post on his blog. It reminds you how precious life is and even at its end, one can celebrate it. Thank you Harry for what you did for this hobby.
