KØFF Homebrew Tips

Making your own Connectors for 3/4" CATV Aluminum Hardline

By GEORGE W. DOWELL - KØFF

Material List:

  • 1 ea. 1/2" aluminum conduit coupler ( actually has a 3/4" inside diameter)
  • 1 ea. 1/2" length of 1/4" copper water tubing. Drill 2 cross hole for solder.
  • 8 ea. #8 X 3/8" aluminum self tapping screws, modified per instructions.
  • 1 ea. 1/2" aluminum threaded hole plug. Drill to fit connector.
  • 1 ea. RF connector of your choice.

Connectors are made similarly to splices (see previous article)

First eight number #8 X 3/8" aluminum self tapping screws are prepared by grinding off the tips, and leaving a flat end. In all cases where screws are used, first a small pilot hole is drilled with a 1/16" bit, then an unmodified pointed screw is screwed part way in, forming the correct size hole, and somewhat extruding the shied material into the fitting. Before the full size screw reaches bottom, remove it and replace it with a flat end one. This procedure minimizes intrusion inside the coax, and reduces the impedance bump .

Fig.1 - Threaded aluminum plugs of the kind sold to seal off unused holes in outdoor electrical junction boxes are drilled to accept a variety of RF connectors:

Fig.2 - Here the prepared connector plug center pin is being soldered to the cable center pin via a 1/2" length of 1/4" copper tubing ( typical as used in icemaker installations):

Fig.3 -Next insert the dielectric material saved when the cable was prepared:

Fig.4 - Completion merely requires threading on the Aluminum shield Coupler and securing with screws:

See you in the pileups!

Happy Homebrewing, Geo>KØFF

I have seen and easy method.
just grind down one end of a barrel connector.
shove it in side lthe aluminum jacket.
center pin will fit snug.
clamp with chose clamp if you ave to split lthe outer jacket.

Is that iron powder toroid like that guy you don't know who keeps showing up in the background of your vacation pictures?

I'm tellin' ya, George, I hate to think about all the hours I spent hanging off a utility pole with coring tools and big wrenches installing the standard CATV hardline connectors when I could have just done it this way...

VERY nice article about yet another good way to take advantage of this great very low loss surplus coax.

But do keep in mind to ask the same cable TV construction crew you get the surplus hardline from about some surplus cable TV "Pin" type connectors that fit it. Using such pin connectors is much easier. In fact the thread on them is the SAME as a PL 259! All that is needed is to cut a plain PL 259 in half and solder the center pin over the center pin of the cable TV pin type connector, Screw on the barrel, And you are done! Many pin type connectors are thrown in the dumpster when the cable TV splicer cuts the pin too short..... Or when they upgrade, About all of the used ones go straight to the dumpster! A coring tool is needed to install the stock pin type connector, But a friendly cable splicer may swap a slightly worn one for a bag of donuts, OR if you cannot get a coring tool, Just take a pliers and break off the barrel on the connector that required the coring. For low frequency use, You will never miss it!

i was shopping in the wrong aisle when I went to the home improvement center. Very elegant and use for my new drill press. I have 1 1/2 aluminum hardline and got bronze reducers with od diameters with the standard pl thread for a barrel connector. Your solution is the ultimate design. Curious how well this hardline works at your QTH. The db drop certainly has to be low. Thanks for pics and article.
