Ham ID Card

Hey here is a real neat and very simple idea:

I just received my new ARRL membership card and was about to discard the expired one. The other day I went to a Ham radio club meeting and had no ID badge on. It was the first time I went to this club. The people were very nice to me but had to keep asking my name and call.

SO, as I was about to through this ARRL membership card out I thought about this meeting and what a nice card this really was. So I took it over to Staples, had it laminated and placed a clip on it.

It looks so good and solved the problem of identification and a ham function.

OH I know that there are many people out there that make these ID badges but. Being a penny pincher, I get a kick out of making something my self for little or no money!

Good idea but you don't need to go to Staples just for that one card. At Staples or Office Depot or any place selling Avery products, just get a 50-pack of Avery 461253 73601 self-adhesive laminating sheets and do it yourself. No tools other than a scissor required for trimming edges.

Lamination sheets are good for other things. What I did nine years ago was to laminate an ID for all the outlet and lamp locations on a house floor plan with the breaker number in red. Those have held up very well through hot summers and cold winters, including being rained on with the garage door open.

A similar thing was done for the lawn sprinkler locations (six stations) to ID the controller cable color coding. Makes it easy to control each station when maintenance is needed on the controller.

BTW, I did laminate my original license card and again when I recently got a Vanity callsign.

I have been a ARRL Life member for 40 years. When I get my cancelled notice, I will not be in any shape to use the card for anything!

Nice article.

Thanks

You can print your current card from a .pdf from the website. It also has your current membership certificate in the same file, I think....you don't have to wait for one to expire or whatever.

I usually just wear my white baseball cap with my name and callsign in large black print.

Sometimes, I find people will still ask me what my name and callsign is anyways.

Perhaps, I need to get one of those bright strobe flashing nametags with the scrolling callsign on the electronic display while sounding my callsign in CW at the same time ?!

Something some of you might be interested in is a custom designed card. I had been looking at the generic ones offered on various web sites. Then, I came upon Name Tags by Gene...now Harlan Technologies. Gene died and Shawn, his son, runs the company now. He made up a great card for me per my specifications. At the top, is my call and name. Then he put the state shape of Kentucky, and even looked my city up on a map so he could put a dot there, with my grid EM66sx next to it. Then he copied my local club's emblem and put it with the ARRL diamond on the card. He even provided a lanyard and a plastic sleeve to put the card in. This was about $12-15 (shipping included) if I remember correctly. He gives outstanding service and I highly recommend him. http://www.hampubs.com/

"Did you have problems with the full-size license? "

No problem at all. My first Extra Class License issued in 1968 is a small certificate in a picture frame.

KG4RRN writes: "I bought a ARRL hat...it has my name a call sign on it."

Thanks for the reminder!

They sell hats, shirts, jackets, bags, etc. I'm thinking a personalized hat and shirt for Field Day and other ham radio activities. Maybe a couple, plus a jacket for when it gets cool overnight.

And I can even order online!

For laminating I just use clear plastic packing tape and labels printed on the computer.

me personally, what I have done to 'pinch' pennies... is self-laminate my fcc license and then goto the dollar store and purchased sleeves 1$ and retractable lanyards 1$..... inexpensive..... and bought a generic black ballcap and used 'glitter glue' pens(purchased from family dollar) to place my callsign on the ballcap as I can't even afford the arrl membership... the only thing is, I occassionally have to reuse the glitter pens to 'refresh'
