MARS Unifies Operation in Support of Haiti Relief Effort:
To assist the MARS communications support effort in Haiti, the heads
of the Army, Air Force, and Navy-Marine Corps MARS programs have agreed
to divvy up responsibilities among the three Service MARS programs.
According to Air Force MARS Public Information Officer David
Trachtenberg, N4WWL/AFA3TR, this delegation of responsibility will
facilitate more efficient utilization of MARS communications assets in
the overall relief operation. On January 12, a 7.0 earthquake struck
Haiti, killing thousands and wiped out the island nation's
communication infrastructure. Read more here

Interesting. If NAVMARS is responsible for recruiting volunteers, does that mean only NAVMARS will go there? But wait, they're quoted in the ARRL Letter as already having been there and helping out. Ah, maybe that's just the ARMYMARS WinLink Jump Team from Nashville.
Then, how is it that Gary Mentra, NN0EKB, on February 1 told a local Tampa Bay TV outlet that he's part of a group being recruited that WILL be going there? (Llinked as an earlier Eham item of Bay Area hams going to Haiti) He's NAVMARS, so how is it? Did he miss the deployment? And, he's quoted as saying he may be the only one going....Strange, very strange.
"According to David Trachtenberg, N4WWL/AFA3TR (AFMARS PR), volunteer MARS radio operators representing all three Service MARS programs have been on the ground in Haiti, working with military and medical teams to provide valuable communications support."
Somebody's not got it quite right, I'm afraid, and may be stretching the truth a bit. I'll trust Mr. Mentra's TV story as being the correct one.
Perhaps, in the rush to gain notoriety, it's only too easy to stretch folks actually in the military and deployed in Haiti into instant MARS membership to achieve positive publicity.
Who's telling the truth? Trachtenburg or Mentra? Why wasn't the ongoing amateur radio MARS contingent activity announced long before now?
I guess, if for nothing else, if WinLink/Sailmail via radio is deployed there, it will free up the SatLinks for more important traffic.

Oh, here come the nay sayers... If these guys are volunteering their time and going to that place (which was terrible on a good day), God bless them and more power to them. For those arm-chair folks who do nothing more than whine about one thing or another, go with them or shut up.
