This is GREAT! Country Music on a ham HF band in Canada!
Who would have guessed this was legal? Maybe this will spread across all available ham HF bands.

I did a QRZ.com name search on hams in Canada with his last name and found none listed. Kind of odd.
Much about this story doesn't quite add up from a factual standpoint.

There's something fishy here. As far as I know, the rules and regulations for the use of the amateur radio bands forbid the transmission of music in all countries. Either this guy is running illegally (funny that the guy's call sign was not mentioned) or there was some important bit of information left out.
I also tried looking up "Cyril Gillingham" on qrz.com and came up empty.

I just sent the newspaper in question an e-mail trying to see if i can get more info on this fellow's activities.
I looked for his name in the rac.ca database and found nothing.
I think this guy is not a ham but probably just a radio enthusiast and he probably bought a small AM transmitter and is using it in that remote part of the Atlantic.
It might be that the newspaper in question is probably giving us a false impression of what is really going on.
I will check out and see what these people answer me back.

Based on my high school broadcasting exploits
(Radio Free Moscow www.omen.com) I would guess he's using a low power FM transmitter. 5 watts AM would not give a solid nighttime signal very far.
