Well, what do you want? Say ANYTHING about two way radio and the only thing people thing about is the CB craze of the 70s and 80s.
I had the same thing in my area about ten years ago--the reporter who came out to a field day site was embellishing his story with all those CB radio phrases. I took him aside and spent almost a half hour with him, giving him a sort of education about ham radio. The result was an even better story--AND that reporter also went and got his ticket that year!
Take the time to do a little teaching and PR work--and the result may just surprise you!

You make a good point - the general publics' perception of amateur radio is often distorted from reality. e.g. I recently worked in an organization of technically adept people (computer geeks) and a surprising number of them held the view that "hams" did nothing more than figure out ways to intercept cell phone calls and transmit to the police on police radio frequencies. As time went on I countered these misconceptions with the truth and was constantly asked about the ins and outs of amateur radio. While none of them ever decided to get a license, at least from a PR perspective they had a good handle on what we're really about. I never did figure out how anyone got the idea we spend our time doing illegal stuff.......oh well.
