Enthusiasts Flock To Shelby Hamfest, But Economy Takes Toll

I enjoyed it, especially the large flea market. There were more used HF rigs of every vintage for sale than I have seen at any hamfest in recent years. But I always wonder about the guys who bring junk that no one even glances at. Do they haul it back home until the next hamfest, or do they leave it in/by the nearest dumpster?

My XYL(KA2SBC) and I really enjoyed the hamfest. This was only our second year. The weather couldn't have been better. I enjoyed the flea market Found what I "needed". Looking forward to next year already.

I saw a quote from "Tower Electronics" that said their business was off. I used to buy from them a few years ago, but they've raised their prices so high that they're no longer competitive. They had PL-259/N adapters priced at $5 each. I found a vendor with hundreds of them out in the flea market area for $1.50 each. Tower had EZ-on silver/teflon "N" connectors priced at $7 each last year and $8.50 each this year (see their website). I can buy them for $4.25 each on eBay out of California and get flat-rate shipping for as many as I want for $4.00. I go to hamfests to find things CHEAPER than the internet. If you're going to be a vendor at a hamfest, you'd better be as cheap as internet prices or lower. If you're not competitive, you need to be selling something nobody can buy on the internet. -WY3X

Most hams have their essential gear and can put together what they don't have for a pressing situation.

Yes, the economy has been hit hard, but like most businesses, we as individual hams don't know what kind of taxes, fees, and essential item price hikes we are going to face in the months ahead. We know that once we hand money over for anything, that money is not ever going to come back to us. So, what's the rush to buy now? If I need medical care in February, what good is an old Drake going to do me now?

Like most hams today, if you want to see something it better be good, otherwise it can wait for better times.

I was a bit overwhelmed by the layout of the flea market and I forgot sunblock so I got red as a lobster, but the XYL and I had a great time. I am putting a station together after a many year hiatus and I scored a good power supply and a GREAT microphone for my rig at the flea market. Also got a great deal on a "to be shipped" item from one of the dealers inside. Probably spent close to a hundred dollars on odds and ends like, connectors, plugs, cables, insulators, etc. A one stop shop for me!

Thanks to all those who put it on... that's a feat!

to K3AN: I think they haul it back home and don't care what they sell... it's an excuse to set up shop and socialize. And if they have something somebody needs, I suppose it makes their day.

Will somebody pass the sunburn cream?
