Press Release: TenTec Announces Ham Radio Dealership and Retail Store

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Ten-Tec, Inc., of Sevierville, TN. is pleased to announce the opening of a full-line amateur radio dealership and retail store to complement the Ten-Tec manufactured line of amateur radio equipment.

Ten-Tec, Inc., was founded by two former Electro-Voice employees, Al Kahn, K4FW and Jack Burchfield, K4JU in 1968. They have been involved in the commercial manufacture and supply of amateur radio equipment since 1969.

Facing dramatic changes in the amateur radio industry through the 1970's and 1980's, Ten-Tec elected to abandon the traditional amateur radio dealer network in 1992 to sell their products factory-direct only to North America.

With the opening of their own dealership to compete with the established dealer network, Ten-Tec plans to use their strong customer base and excellent service reputation to garner additional sales within amateur radio.

"We've really come full circle with the opening of our own dealership and store, from leaving the dealers 9 years ago to now competing with them. We have a large, loyal customer base that we'll be able to supply with accessories that complement our own manufactured equipment", says Amateur Radio Product Manager, Scott Robbins, W4PA. "We're bullish on amateur radio - interest in the hobby is high, we have been selling our own equipment as fast as we can build it for several years now and we anticipate that the retail dealership will be a huge success."

Equipment from more than 20 manufacturers is already in stock and available direct from Ten-Tec. "We have a lot of inventory on hand, and will continue to add additional items from manufacturers we are already carrying, plus we anticipate adding even more manufacturers in the near future", Robbins said.

The annual Ten-Tec hamfest on September 28-29 will also serve as the grand opening for the newly-remodeled 1,000 square foot retail store and ham shack in the lobby of the Ten-Tec manufacturing facility. "While we are already open for business, we don't expect to have all the new items listed on our web site for a couple more weeks. We are already selling through the store and over our (800) lines, however, and are pricing competitively with the major dealers."

The Ten-Tec manufacturing facility and retail store are located in Sevierville, TN., 30 miles southeast of Knoxville. Retail store hours are 8-5 Eastern, Mon-Fri. Sales department (800) 833-7373. Web site: www.tentec.com

TenTec Announces Ham Radio Dealership and Retail S

It'll be interesting to see how competitive Ten-Tec will be on retail pricing of other manufacturers' equipment compared to chain outlets like Ham Radio Outlet (HRO) and Amateur Electronic Supply (AES). If they are going to sell for the same price as the chains, I'd rather do business with chains, at least they are in my backyard.

It will also be interesting to see what gear Ten-Tec chooses to retail, especially if that gear goes head-to-head with Ten-Tec's own product line. They may not carry everything.

I wish any retailer luck in this business environment, and I hope they do well for the sake of the hobby.

Boy, I'd sure like to see their business plan!

Are they really going to sell YaeComWood radios in direct competition with their own? If not, I don't see how they can keep a store in business selling just antennas and shack accessories. The margins may be better, but you gotta sell a lot of PL-259s to equal one FT-1000MP!

What about the pricing of their own radios- Are they going to end the "factory direct" route they now sell their radios through? If so, that means a price increase to cover the store overhead. There goes some of their volume. If their prices stay the same, then they've just eroded their profit margin. Two-tier pricing? Not likely. Who would buy at the higher store price?

This is amazing!

way to go ten-tec, you can count me as a customer. i am getting sick and tired of getting
jacked around by the big stores. if your sales support is half as good as some of the big
boys you already have them beat

It's nice to see some expansion and confidence in the ham radio market as so many of you seem to have written ham radio off and are constantly predicting its demise.

Best of luck in the new venture Ten Tec !

Your high quality products and top notch customer service through the years are an example to the industry.

Well, I'm going to try to get down to Sevierville on the 29th (about 70 miles southwest of here). Should be a fun visit, and it will be nice to visit a ham store in the area since the last one around here closed down many years ago. I'd bet there won't be any competing hardware there, though.

Nice idea! Convert the "lobby" into a showroom. No overhead (except stock from other manufacturers). I hope kits, components and the legendary TenTec enclosures are part of the retail line.

I'll look forward to visiting next time I'm in the mountains. Being 10 minutes from the most popular National Park in the country probably won't hurt business either. :)

If only there were a ten-tec store in Australia! I'd hop down there and buy a rig today.

Since I use Ten-Tec HF equipment almost exclusively in my shack, I'm glad to hear that Ten-Tec will now be selling a wide range of accessories. I can buy items that will match up with my Ten-Tec radios and get the backing of Ten-Tec's technical staff.

Most other ham dealers, who sell only import radios, won't give you the time of day when you tell them you have a Ten-Tec HF radio.

I wish Ten-Tec well with this new enterprise.

Maybe this will lead to a few extra Dealers across
the country. I really hate to buy the rice boxes,
but Ten Tec left no real option when they quit
their dealer program. Myself and others like to
look at and "feel" a $2000 to $3000 radio before
you lay out the cash.

The dealers don't give you the opportunity - we do.
Purchase a transceiver from us and it comes with a
30 day money back guarantee, 100% of purchase price.
You get to try it with all of your "stuff" for 30
days at your ham shack. Don't like the rig?
Send it back for a refund.

Contrast that with the dealers: use it for an hour
at the dealer, buy it and it's yours. Don't like
it? Pay a restocking fee to return it within 10
days.

One hour at the dealer and a 10 to 15% restocking fee
versus trying it risk-free for 30 days in your own
shack is a pretty easy decision.

Just one of the many reasons Ten-Tec doesn't sell
transceivers through dealers any longer.

Scott Robbins, W4PA
