QYL: The Time Has Come

In celebration of my fiftieth year in Ham Radio, I'd like to return to a concern – an idea – I had back in the days of my youth. As a young 13 year-old Novice I knew many hams my own age and worked mostly unmarried, young ops at first and then started talking to older ops too. I could not help but notice that there was one thing that separated the age groups even more than music or politics. That was that when I worked what I then thought of as an “old guy” (probably someone much younger than I am now) I couldn't help noticing that they would often end a QSO saying that their wife needed them to take out the garbage, or maybe the dog, or she was calling them for dinner or somesuch explanation.

As I got some years older I began to notice that many of my friends would have to go QRT because they were late picking their girlfriend up for a date. Or perhaps said girlfriend was visiting and either she thought Ham Radio was less than a treat to watch or they had other more exciting plans together than to continue the ragchew. Then I got married and many times my own XYL would have some sort of “honey do” task in the midst of a QSO and I would have to sign off.

I realized: Ham Radio is lacking a Q Signal. We have QRT and QRZ and QSO and all those most excellent semantic helpmates. But where is the Q Signal to cover the above instances? So, I wrote my only letter to be published in QST Magazine more than twenty years ago.

In that letter, I suggested the Q Signal of “QYL.”

Sending QYL means “I must immediately close my station because my wife or girlfriend wants me to.”

The idea of QYL is not just the informational content but it is situational as well. To anyone and in any language or culture it conveys the near emergency of having to quickly close your station without even momentary hesitation or unnecessary and ill-advised further chat.

Like all Q signals it is succinct, answers a communication need that almost all hams face on a near-daily basis, and can be quickly defined in any list of such signals. As a young man the idea of QYL seemed to be a viable thought and now as an older and long-married ham I must say that this is a Q-signal to conjure with.

I understand that times change. I know that our hobby has progressed. I realize we have many hams now that are themselves XYLs and YLs. Not just to be politically correct but in recognition of a true need I now also suggest the Q Signal of QOM for them to use.

QYL or QOM, there's something here for everyone! This time, a couple decades later, are you all with me on this?

My XYL, children and grandchildren have all learned that as I am "beeping away" at the paddles there is a living breathing human being on the "other side" and to interrupt me is as rude as if I were speaking to someone face to face. They do not copy code but have learned to identify when I am in qso and the manners to wait until I finish my qso before asking me to build a life size nuclear submarine out of popsicle sticks in the back yard. I on the other hand have learned: When the XYL comes home with groceries and I am in the middle of QSO, I need to QRT quickly as I do not really enjoy sleeping on the sofa!
Nice article, all food for thought!
Oh crap, QYL QYL!!!! Gotta go feed the dog, 73's!

If you are controlled to that degree, then I suggest another Q signal--QHP. (I don't have to explain the H P, do I?) Just as I recognize that my XYL wants me to spend time with her AND that sometimes she wants to be alone, she recognizes that when I'm at my hobby desk in the middle of a QSO, I would like to finish that without being interrupted.

I also realize that if I'm just twirling the knob, looking for a QSO and she needs me--even for just bringing in the groceries--that I can leave it for later. Co-operation, and just keeping an ear out for your better half, can work too!

Interesting idea. Of course, by extension, you are suggesting another Q signal for the YL ops: QOM.

Gotta go "... build a life size nuclear submarine out of popsicle sticks in the back yard." LOL

My Household-6 gets deferred to occasionally, although she is usually VERY understanding if knowing a QSO even might be going on, particularly CW. That said, the grocs need to be unloaded at times or, being vertically challenged, needs help reaching something important. Especially in CW, brevity is appreciated.

I see a niche for this.
:)
p.s. and am waiting for the plans to be posted for the nuke sub w/popsicle sticks.

It isn't a Q code but there is a letter sequence
which addresses the matter.

It is:

SWMBO

or:

She Who Must Be Obeyed!

We have been married almost forty three years and I am still proud of this move....
knowing full well the the 'will ya' love me forever?' thing was a crap shoot at best I used what little leverage was left to me and insisted she get her ticket BEFORE we got married. ... she didn't just settle for the Tech either, she buckled down and got (and still has) her Advanced class.

I'm here to tell the prospective ham grooms out there, this is the best move you will ever make in a marrage.

We have not only shared an interest over the years but I never get any heartburn for wanting to go to a hamfest or get a new something or another.

Any of you guys that drop everything the moment your YL appears on scene...

Do you do the same thing to your wife? Your kids? Your friends? Store clerks? Any other humans? I'd bet you don't. I'd bet you'd consider it rude if you did.

It's rude to interrupt others, no matter who is doing it. If you allow others to rudely interrupt your hobbies, then it's YOUR problem.

Thinking up a new Q signal for "I'm a whimp and enjoy other people telling me when I can or can't enjoy my life" is just plain silly.

"QPE" has been used during especially long rag chews...

It stands for the wash room break and is known as "The International Pauses that Refreshes"

I don't know if, (like the officially added "@" sign) the ITU sanctions it or not...

When the opportunity arises, (and it is certain that it will) I think I'll use this "new QYL". When an explanation is required I'll tell them to look it up here on eHam. At any rate, they'll get their explanation and the site will garner a few hits in the process. ;)

Rumpole! Yes indeed - sad to say Leo McKern died a while back but watching him almost made me take up the law instead of science, and DID lead to me loving the occaisional Chateuea Thames Embankment!

Back on topic - I am a considerate husband; I help when help is appreciated or required or just needed. I have a few other pastimes; motorcycling (very important to me), surfing, reading, scepticism, MTB, banjo and bagpipes! Ham radio is JUST a pastime. Its a very pleasurable one, but it doesn't come before my wife and daughter by any stretch of the imagination. In return, my wife gives me plenty of time to do things like ham radio, motorcycle riding and surfing; things she neither does nor is interested in doing.

Its called getting along.

RE: QYL: The Time Has Come
by WI7B on May 4, 2011 Mail this to a friend!

I understand the humorous side of this proposal, but don't be surprised when some fellow ham berates you for a lack of knowledge of the Q-codes.

"go QRT"? No, I don't thing so.

QRT => Q: Shall I stop sending? or A/S: Stop sending.

It does not mean you are "going" anywhere. That's just sloppy usage. As for QRA through QUZ, these are allocated to the International Telecommunications Union (ITU). Further, QVA through QZZ is not allocated.

So, is the proposal to get folks on eHam to petition the ITU for the first Q-code in the unallocated series to be 'stopped by my wife or girlfriend'? How far would that go? How would amateur radio appear in their eyes at this crucial junction in a debate on our frequency allocations?

Finally, we already have a Q-code for this propsed suggestion A/S: I am busy (with). It's QRL.

So, try QRL XYL.

73,

---* Ken

Well, no. Actually I proposed to get people to chuckle! I'm nowhere near persuasive enough to rally hundreds of hams for an ITU petition. But, thanks for the implied compliment!!

Surely QRT would cover this situation, the person you are in contact with has to leave the frequency. Am I correct in thinking that the authors suggestion would be used during a CW contact ? If the contact needs to leave the frequency following a short chat saying that he needs to do some jobs or something is simple enough to say. without another Q "thingie"

In times past when I've become bored with listening to the never ending list of station equipment, the thickness of the wire antenna etc etc there's always a call for me on the phone, must go, 73.

M6OZI bet you dont do much surfing since the water is so bloody cold there. But as your other comments go you are right on the money. this year will be our 21st year married and I do go QYL/QRL/QRT when she calls me. You might call me QPW but at least I am still getting some. But one thing my XYL will do is let me finish the QSO because she thinks it is rude to interrupt a conversation. But when she does come home with grocery's you bet I am there ASAP because it is too hot here to leave food in the car for too long.
Funny article many funny comments also.

Let's see. So if I'm not divorced three times, living in a rusted house trailer, 50+ pounds overweight, and have a relief tube running from my shack to the outhouse, I'm QPW? Good enough, I can live with that. And when I'm SK (which most hams will be sooner than later) you can sit your radios in the chairs at your funeral. No thanks, my family and friends are more important to me than any box of silicon will ever be. Color me QPW, I have a life.

Life is like a wheel. What goes around, comes around.

Repeatedly disrespect your wife or girlfriend by flaunting your ham radio 'mistress' and you will surely pay for your indiscretions, somewhere, somehow.

While some hams thump their chests and brag about being Boss Hogg at home, little do they know that their better halves may be looking to trade them in on that state-of-the-art male at her work or on social media or even at church.

I wouldn't trade my wife (I NEVER call her an XYL) for ten K3's or a boatload of Alphas. And therefore, as that metaphorical wheel of life rolls my way, she is right there, supporting my hobby, still working to keep me in radios, and always sending me those priceless signals that no 'Q-whatever' can hold a candle to.

To those who might laugh, consider this:

When was the last time your radio gave you a needed hug or gave itself unconditionally to you on a cold winter's night?

I thought so!

For those who have been fortunate enough to maintain a good marital relationship, you are to be commended. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a spouse who is tolerant of our behaviors without a lot of sound effects from the "Snow Tires on Ice" album. We cope using a number of methods. Humor as misplaced as it may be at times is one of the more popular techniques of dealing with the insanity of dysfunctional relationships.

On a serious note, I don't think this would ever become popular because most people don't want to admit that their wives are forcing them off the Radio. So we all make up an excuse or make a XYL crack and gracefully go QRT. Saying I am going QYL is like saying I am henpecked and the wife wants me.

And to the other poster, I don't think it's a reflection on marriage, one may have a very strong marriage and also be loving, responding and helpful to the wife but not want to broadcast that fact on the radio.

RE: QYL: The Time Has Come

I hesitate to contribute here because some XYL may be listening. The fear arises in nappy hams because of the assumption that ham radio is a way of life whereas we older hams know it is life itself. Come on guys try a little divergent thinking here. Before my wife was trained, she used to switch on her hair drier during a long QSO. Eventually she said she couldn't understand why her hair driers were so unreliable, in contrast to those of her friends. Immediately I sprang to her aid by fitting her up with a Dayton 220 volt amp fan which sadly she found could only be used in the sound-proof drier room.

If you have to worry about QYL, then consider yourselves fortunate. I lost my XYL over a year and a half ago, that's when you really miss them! Oh, to be interrupted. I guess that's why I'm back in Ham Radio for the company and activity.

years ago ie.early 80's I took a girl out on our 2nd date, picked her up and had the 2m rig on in the 4x4,one of the local guys got on the repeater and asked for a radio check (he had a problem earlier that day and had just fixed it), I answered him told him it sounded good and signed out, she says " oh no, that (pointing at radio) has got to go, I won't tolerate that (explative deleted)radio garbage, I turned around took her back home and dropped her off she was highly ticked off and so was her mother, her father told them he would "handle it" and after they walked away he said " good for you she's just like her mother, her way or no way you did yourself a favor."

Now that, Roy, was the best move you ever made. Bet the father would have wanted to buy you a beer--if he didn't have to get back in the house!

Repeat after me you spineless jackwagons:"I'll get off the radio when I feel like getting off the radio. So shut your mouth and make me a chicken pot pie!"

When it's got to this stage it is a sign that early training has not been given.

My first wife (and only wife) and I have been married now for over 41 years, and we have always mutually respected each other's hobbies. She would no more demand that I turn off my radio than I would demand she turn off her sewing or embroidery machine. When I was dating, any woman that tried to make me "conform" to her wishes never saw me again. Peiod.Anyone stupid enough to marry someone that would makes such demands either has no will of his own or likes to be dominated. No man with any real testosterone would ever get himself into that situation inthe first place. So I see no reason for a new Q signal as such.

Man, that put a lump in my throat. I think you've summed it up best. All the best, brother.

We all have way to much time on our hands. I love my xyl and I love my radio hobby. But obviously, not in the same way. We respect each others space and each other. I have managed, in the 56 years of ham radio, to find the time to enjoy my hobby each day and my xyl each day. What a wonderful life.

AB3MO,
I can sympathize. I lost my wife years back to cancer. Even when you are prepared, there is no way to be really ready. The hurt goes away in time and the good memories will stay.

Frank

Great idea, Neil. Not so much for having to QRT NOW OR Else!!, but in any case. The other day my xyl wasn't feeling well, and after an hour in the shack, I figured I should get in and see if she needed anything. Instead of, "I need to QRT and yada yada," I could've just used QYL. Or when I hear her pull in the garage and know she's just returned from the store and will need help...same thing.
Does remind me of something a CW Op told me once, that we could incorporate as well (but only when our xyl doesn't copy CW). He gave me a "AS" (Wait) and when he came back, said, "Sri, xyl QRM."

K9YNF Says it perfectly. My Wife got her ticket for one reason-ME. To talk to ME! and to call on me when the Papa Oscar Oscar hit the rapidly revolving blades. So if she's up at the house (the Shack is about 150 Feet in its own Building), I get a Call on "Our Frequency"for something that needs attention, I'll politely tell her OK, Let me clear off CW. If its Urgent I tell the Op Have to run, XYL needs me ASAP. Never had a Op say anything other than Understood and 73! Just to add one bit of data to his comments_ Until Icom, Yahoo or Kenwood offers a out of the box, Standard equipment Back scratching, Dinner cooking, Clothes washing, take care of the bills dog, kids phone calls, and other crap while I am in the shack Module, I'll go with the poster and use QYL. I'd rather cut a QSO short, Or ask if they will hang on a few if in the middle of a rag chew- then to "QPO" my Bride of 25 years. A Op in a QSO offers no threat of the frying pan...QSL?
