The Hurricane Watch Net has ceased operation
for “Super-storm” Sandy. There is no
question that the storm will continue to do
damage for several days but since it is no
longer a hurricane and not over open water
the National Hurricane Center has handed off
responsibility to another branch within the
weather system. On the ham radio side, there
are state and regional ARES and other
emergency nets in place with the specific
purpose of handling these events. We do not
want to overlap their service to the public.
Over these days we took several hundred
reports from amateurs who supplied detailed
information in a most professional manner.
These ground reports were critical to the
National Hurricane Center’s ability to track
and monitor the storm. We appreciate your
dedication to providing this information!
Our thanks go to the 14.325 group, the
Waterways Net which partnered with us in the
morning, and to the 68 group which graciously
moved off their 40 meter frequency so we
could operate. And our thanks to the hundreds
of amateurs who allowed us a clear frequency
or stood by to help with relays and fills
even during a crowded contest.
Our thoughts and prayers are with the
millions whose lives have been affected by
the storm.
