HUNDREDS of lives may have been saved on the night Superstorm Sandy hit America — by an Irishman in his shed.

Amateur radio fan Benny Young, from Tyrone, was tuning in on his hut-based hobby when he heard a ‘mayday’ call from a plane over the Atlantic.

But the United Airlines captain, en route from Dublin to Boston, wasn’t able to reach flight controllers in the US.

If this happened as stated, great. Saying the relaying saved hundreds of lives is going a bit too far. Airplanes don't need radios to land. A pilot can avoid the weather, consult his charts and pick an alternate field. Sure, it is more work than calling the controller, but certainly not life threatening. The planes have a good reserve of fuel, GPS and real time weather information. I also doubt a pilot would call Mayday for a communication problem. He would have come within VHF range soon enough to make contact..

On another site someone posted that the story was a farce. Said they spoke with people in the airline industry and it never happened. It's an exciting story to read - wishing you could have been the one. But if it really didn't happen, well, that would be bad.
