PLEASE DO NOT WIRE MONEY TO ANYONE
Walk away from any seller who wants money wired. This is how scammers work.
Don't buy from someone selling for a "friend".
Pass up the deal! It's NO deal.

It's a shame people still need to be told this. Oh yeah, and don't deposit cash in any Nigerian bank accounts - I don't care if the guy is a prince in his country.

You know what? When the son of the deposed king of Nigeria emails you directly, asking for help, you help! His father ran the freaking country! Ok?

They must be doing something right in Nigeria. Every day I get so many emails with people wanting to just give away millions of dollars to complete strangers. What are we doing wrong here?? :P

If it seems to good to be true...IT IS!

With all the price information available on the internet nobody gives things away anymore.

Research, research, research...Google the call, Google the name, Google the email, Google the telephone number, Google the XYL, Google the grandmother, Google the dog. Used words like scam, rip off or problem on your Google search. See how long the seller has been a ham and how many QRZ look ups he/she has. Read his/hers QRZ profile. Leopards don't change their stripes. Once a crook and a deadbeat always a crook and a deadbeat.

Google the item image. You would be surprised how many crooks will steal a picture on the internet and try to pass it as his/her own. Some will steal the image and the entire ad word for word. I even had a real ham try to use my equipment pictures for his ads because he was too lazy to take his own pictures. he even got highly insulted when I called hi out on it.

Does the sale make sense? Is he/she a novice or tech with no look ups selling a ton of HF equipment at garage sale prices? Close the deal on the phone not via email. Not the safest but Paypal is better than Western Union, personal check, cashiers checks or money orders.

Never buy from a non-ham selling ham gear.

Another good way to avoid being taken for a ride is to keep an eye on the forums--especially three, "Company Reviews," "Stolen Gear," and "Good Buyer/Seller Beware" down at the bottom of the list.

You can pick up on a lot of buying and selling activity that some of the notorious people/businesses have their dirty fingers in.

BTW, if you do use PayPal, remember that it isn't regulated by any of the laws that govern banking. Pay the extra to get proof of delivery, insurance, and keep records for the time period that PayPal allows a person to file a claim within. It just may save your money and possibly your equipment from being taken.

I recently responded to Nobranna in Nigeria about a bridge he wanted to sell located in the NYC area since he indicated it would be an excellent site for a beam antenna(high elevation and optimum ground plane area).I checked it out on Google earth and called a few friends in the area to satisfy myself of the actual existence and location.Since I am somewhat cash strapped I offered him an even swap of 50 prime acres of ocean with an unobstructed view of Honolulu,HW. just 2 mi.to the east and threw in a small boat for easy commute to town.So far it looks like a go.

At least you can still buy 1 liter "Big Gulps" Coca Cola original overthere. Not so in Bloomberg City.

I personally gave my banking account with password to a Nigerian Prince , and he did what he told me in all honesty, he provided me with 4 million bucks for helping him out of trouble. Attorney says here I did nothing wrong against the law. I even paid 2 milloin income tax to revenew service, so government can spent half of it.

So now I am still rich and buy all the kenwoods, yaesu Icom, Flex Radio and Elecraft equipment that is for sale.

So you guys believe the writer of this article, that increases the opportunities of the honest people that believe others still on their word.

I will occasionally exchange E-Mails with one of these Bozos offering to send them a money order for more than the price if they will please help me out with a financial problem and send me back the difference less 5% for their trouble. Never had ANYONE take me up on my offer! Could it be that they know something that they assume I don't know?

"Don't buy from someone selling for a "friend"."

I am a long time member on eham and have bought on eBay with a 100% rating as well as a number of other sites. I generally don't sell, however, and I don't own a digital camera.
Some time ago, I asked a friend to list several items for me on eBay as I had never done so and he obliged. The items were sold, sellers were happy; end of story. My point? NOT ALL SALES BY "FRIENDS" ARE QUESTIONABLE!!! AND ALL generalizations, no matter by whom they're made, should be considered suspect.
I have very specific ideas about the type of digital camera I want to (will) buy and I will NOT compromise those requirements just to please the demands of some website "little Caesar". Therefore, until I can afford the camera of my choice, I will simply do without; and I MAY ask a friend to list items in the future. At least I have been forewarned about where NOT to list my items or, for that matter, to BUY items.

"Never buy from a non-ham selling ham gear."

ANOTHER GENERALIZATION!" BEWARE of generalizations!

The seller may very well be a relative of a recently deceased ham. What's (s)he supposed to do? Let his friendly neighborhood ham rip him off as I've seen happen time after time? I even had one of those relatives tell me that she was told that its customary to give the sellers 50% of the proceeds for their "help". Fortunately, that was squashed before it happened.

Oh boy, someone is in line for a stroke or heart attack...ha ha ha ha.

It's a hobby people and if you are going to get your blood pressure up on account of it, or what someone said or did not say, find something a more solitaire hobby where you can control what opinions other have and possibly skirt that stroke or heart attack that is surely waiting for you.

Have you thought of, gardening? Leafy things do not have opinions or talk back. Stamp collecting might also be good but you might end up in a fight with the images...cheers!

WRT the Nigerian scammers, etc....saw where they prey most effectively on females who are older, lonely, and otherwise socially awkward and reclusive. Some even KNEW they were being ripped off, but were so emotionally taken by the swooning on the phone that it didn't matter.

Absolutely friggin' mind-boggling.

At least my annoyance (NOT anger) is directed toward comments that, I believe, causes an unreasonable impression of someone not deserving of it; a justifiable reason to be annoyed.
As for your comment, I'll die when its my time to die. Nothing I can do about that and I accept it for what it is so don't get too excited at the prospect.

As noted in another post; annoyance, not anger. And, yes, I do tend to get a bit irate when I recall the incident I described about trying to charge the SK's widow. Two very nice people whom I considered to be very good friends. I think a similar occurrence would upset you as well.

No need to abandon electronics. I've found that very enjoyable over a 50+ year career. Just need to ignore ham radio and ham radio web sites, as a former employer admonished many years ago, and concentrate on electronics.

"certified by the Republican governor of Hawai", when has Hawaii had a republican governor?

..........................

I have had many transactions wired directly into a bank account. I have a separate bank account set up just for that function. Pay pal cost 3% of the total fee and on large items that can run into real money.
On a $7000 radio you pay $210.00. The bank $45 deposit fee in a much better deal. As other have said do you research.
Google the call.

Go on QRZ.com

Ask for more information.

Why is the item being sold?

Warranty?

How is it being shipped?

References?

Will they accept a return?

In 53 years of ham radio I have rarely run into a problem selling or buying an item.

Linda Lingle (R) 2002-2010. The President was elected in 2008, when this whole birther nonsense came to a head. She made a statement in 2010 about his birthplace as being confirmed in Hawaii.

Actually, the he was a she, and the Bureau of Vital Statistics confirmed it and compared it to backups, and there were two independent newspaper birth announcements. But honestly, people would deny it if Jesus Himself confirmed it on live national TV, so really no specialists examining this will make a difference. It's really just a ploy to circumvent democratic elections when your candidate lost.

That's the problem with the world today. Too many generalized assumptions and falsehoods spread by those who either want to cause problems--or get their jollies by doing so. If that guy wasn't born here (in the US) there would have been action taken way before now.

RE: PLEASE DO NOT WIRE MONEY TO ANYONE

Paypal fees--and their so called business ethics--are a matter of concern when the cost of an item is high. Anyway, if I can't see and hear an item like that (high priced) that I'm considering buying, I don't buy it!

You've got to remember that e-bay and paypal have been conceived and are in business to make money for their owners--AND ONLY THAT. They're claims of providing convenience and security are only claims. Just look at RadioMart and that company's record if you want proof!

Unless and until paypal is governed by banking regulations, the most I'll use it for is small change items. I'll buy my rigs either at a dealer or from a local source only, and that is still only after I've seen it and heard it work.

>You may not be aware that the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office examined the provided documents and determined they are were forged documents.

The Maricopa County sheriff Joe Arpaio is a known publicity opportunist and fringe politician. Outside of conservative propaganda media his findings were generally dismissed as being frivolous and his credibility is nil with regards to the birth certificate issue.

After the nuts whined for months about the short form not being sufficient and demanding a long form, the long form certificate was produced and validated by the State of Hawaii, and they whined that was a fake. No one has ever explained how someone went back in time and faked two newspaper birth announcements, though maybe crazy Joe can prove time travel exists. These people want a certain outcome and they're quite simply willing to abandon all logic and evidence to get to that outcome.

Regarding the birthers: It really doesn't matter. We are living in a third world country where nothing is as it seems except the corruption.

There are two types of people - the drugged up, dunbed down who like whatever is happening because someone else is paying for it and the responsible aware type who sees what is going on but can't undersrand why so many others don't but is smart enough to keep his mouth shut and go about his business and hope he and his family survive the next four years.

I especially like the craigslist offer to sell you a gorgeous John Deere tractor for less than half the actual value, exactly $5200.00 last time I saw it and throw in 6-8 expensive attachments, mowers, front bucket and loader, 50K generator that runs off the PTO, and a few more. Then wants you to send them the money sight unseen (to his EBAY express account, "your familiar with EBAY express aren't you?" while offering to deliver to your door and a %100 refund when it arrives if you don't like it. A person would have to be as bright as a liberal to accept that one, but some must have because the ad returns time after time. BTW, it is a gorgeous JD tractor and way to great a deal to pass up.

You can have a lot of fun if you mess the scammers around. I reckon I wasted several hundred dollars of a scammer who tried to rip me off for $220. I got him to to phone my expensive phone number and FAX long documents to seal a dea where he thought he was going to get around $25,000 for various bits of radio kit.

I've documented it in some detail here:

http://forum.419eater.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=230851

In my opinion the best way to find out if something actually exists, is to ask for photos with everyday items in them. Like:

"Please take a picture of the rig with a battery in front of it and a bit of toilet paper on top and a cup of coffee in the picture."

It would be hard for someone to create such a picture. Of course, I would still never wire the money.

Amateurs need to get together and waste the time/money of these scammers. I am baiting one at the minute, who has phoned me a dozen timees from Nigeria, which is routed to my UK mobile number. I suspect each call costs him $2. Next he is going to FAX several documents.

I don't understand the "friend" thing, while the wiring money thing makes perfect sense.

So a guy selling something for a senior online is a risk somehow? A person who sells alot online, putting something on eBay for a friend who normally doesn't is a risk? I don't get this.

Lots of scammers claim to be selling for a friend, their husband who had died, selling on behalf of the family of a silent key etc.

Of course, this could be genuine, but it is a wery common way for a scammer to get you to send money to who they want to, rather than than real radio ham, a genuine friend, XYL of a silent key etc.

Before the advent of Paypal I would sometimes send SMALL amount of cash in the post to US hams from the UK. I'd walk into a travel agent, buy some $US, and stick them in the post. The cost of gettng a bank draft was often more than the cost of the components I would buy, and in any case the bank draft would give me next to zero protection.

If it was a scam, and someone ripped me off, the loss was minimal.

As somone who has scam-baited a number of scammers, indicating I want to spend serious amount of money with them, the way they often work is:

1) Look up details on QRZ.com of a radio ham, such as VE3XAX. T0hen set up a free email (Hotmail, gmail, blumail etc

2) Tell you their name and address are of the radio ham.

3) Want Western Union

4) Send you details of who they want it paid to. This person is quite different from the radio ham.

5) When you query this, they tell you they are out of town, it is their wife/cousins etc account.

6) Want the Western Union MTCN sent via email.

7) They can't accept local pickup, as they are out of town.

I once tried to buy a computer which I was a bit suspicous about, but since the seller said he would accept a credit card, I deceided to go ahead. Then he tells me the credit card had been declined, so could I wire the money. So I phone my credit card compnay, and are told they had not declined any transaction, and no attempt have been made to withdraw funds.

There are a number of things you can do to reduce the risk of fraud.

A) Confirm they actually have the item. Ask for photos with the item, along with some random items. Any idiot can get a photo off the web of an expensive bit of radio equipment, but it is much harder to get a picture with items *YOU* specify.

See my pictures here, when I asked for photos of some exensive test cables wtih pictures of a battery in them.

http://www.vnacalibration.co.uk/help-reduce-scams/Agilent%2085131F%20sn52620%20003.jpg

B) Ask for a phone number and chat to them about the item.

C) Ask them how they intend packaging the item. I've had problems with heavy items being damaged due to inadequate packaging.

D) Send the money via a secure means. Paypal is not bad, but is useless for high value items. I've never used Google checkouts, but that might be a better option.

If you want to read an amuzing story of how a radio hame wasted a lot of money of a scammer, see

Good luck
