President Obama Nominates Financier and Former Telecom Executive Tom Wheeler as FCC Chairman:

On Wednesday, May 1, President Barack Obama announced that he nominated Tom Wheeler to be the new Chairman of the Federal Communications Commission. If the Senate confirms the nomination, Wheeler will replace Julius Genachowski who announced his resignation from the FCC in March. Pending Wheeler's confirmation, FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn -- the agency's soon-to-be senior Democrat -- will serve as the Commission's acting chairman.

Wheeler, 67, has served as an informal adviser to Obama in recent years and has been a major fundraiser for his political campaigns. He has a background as a venture capitalist and as a lobbyist for the communications industry. He is the former President of the National Cable Television Association (now known as National Cable & Telecommunications Association) and former Chief Executive Officer of the Cellular Telecommunications & Internet Association. Currently, he is a Managing Director at Core Capital Partners, a venture capital firm in Washington, DC. Mr. Wheeler appears to be someone with experience in the industry. Now, will he be the first ++non-attorney++ appointee in decades?

At least, from his brief vitae, it sounds like he might have a technical or business education instead of a law degree. I sure hope so. Frankly, I'm tired of former Congressional-aide-lawyer-understudies being given "plum" jobs on the Commission.

However, he is also a venture capitalist and lobbyist. Mostly involved in the cable TV side of the industry..
He will NOT be a friend to amateur radio or anything that doesn't generate money. I can see some bad things happening should he be confirmed.

Perhaps you're correct. But, then again, his allegiances don't favor more competition in broadband delivery. So, I doubt he will be a friend of BPL.

If his mantra is to cut costs, well, he can begin by granting lifetime amateur licenses (or at least credit for element passage), including a large fee hike for vanity issuance as a lifetime grant.

Is he a friend of homeland security, etc.? Probably. As such, it won't take a great deal of effort to show him the holes in public safety radio and cellular coverage that amateur radio can fill post disaster.

On the other hand, if we are still wishing that the FCC pre-empt CC&R antenna restrictions, we can hang that one up....

Personally, I prefer to have someone with some experience in the area to a green behind the ears young attorney who owes allegiances to his senate and house benefactors who "plummed" him/her.

Wheeler was a major contributor to your president's campaign. 'Nuff said.

Hmmm, a financier and an executive. I sorta remember when the "zeitgeist" of the FCC was more engineering-oriented. Now, it seems that appointments to this body are more often rewards for political favors and financial support.

As for helping us with CC&R antenna hassles, I don't think the very political FCC will help us there UNLESS congress actually MANDATES that the FCC provide regulatory relief. So, we have to be relentlessly persistant in lobbying ( read that, hounding, badgering and pestering) our congressional delegations to REQUIRE the FCC to provide relief to us. ~73
