Propagation software is okay, but it merely gives predictions. Beacons are the best source of propagation information because you know the path is open in the direction of the beacon, if you can hear it. Those beacons that change their output power, decreasing it in steps, can give you a good idea in real time of just how well a path is open, at least to that beacon.

Also, with a dependable signal being received, you have plenty of time to try adjustments to your receiver and examine the effects. All in all, beacons are useful, and all hams should use them to advantage at least from time to time.
