Lost Mobile Mic, Fix

Lost Mobile Mic, Fix
by N6JSX/8

If you have operated mobile long enough you have had a mobile hand-held microphone fall to the vehicle floor while driving - retrieve is by pull up on the mic coil-cord. Depending on where the microphone hanger bracket is located in your cockpit you may have to reach across the vehicle to get to the mic, usually taking you eyes off the road. Here is a fix I created to minimize this Safety hazard while driving and allow me the use of the Braille method of mic location keeping my eyes where they are suppose to be - on traffic.

Found on eBay & Electronic Goldmine – are “Rare-earth Neodymium N50 ring type super magnets,” 10mm Dia x 3mm thick with countersunk 3mm hole in the center. Pkg5/$4.00

These Rare-earth magnets are just about the size of the button hanger on the back of most mobile-mics (like my FTM-400/7800/8800/8900). The mic plastic hanger button is attached with a screw making it easy to substitute for this button magnet.

But I soon found a problem; my SUV cockpit is almost all plastic. The traditional button mic hanger bracket is metal but little else. So I put a fender washer with double-stick tape on the center console to hold the mic inplace. Works like a champ giving putting the mic in easy reach. The mic even sticks to my pants pocket holding my small pocket knife.

Excellent! Just ordered a dozen Neodymium magnets from ebay. Still have a few metal surfaces in my Jeep TJ to hang a mike from.

Brilliant! With a neodymium magnet of that strength, a even smaller washer will suffice.

This is a great article for all states that do not have a distracted driver law in place. California basically made mobile amateur radio illegal. No amateur radio exemption.

The ARRL says that they are working on it, but no progress as of today.

Outstanding for everyone except us here in California.

If you don't want to home brew one these folks make a very nice one which I have been quite happy with.

They put the magnet on the "mount" not on the mic. I suspect thats to keep it from latching onto anything in the interior of the vehicle thats ferrous.

I have three of them and they work perfectly.

This is a great idea and thanks for sharing!

This is not only a good idea for the mobile - why not use it in the shack instead of having to drill holes for a metal mic bracket.

Thanks and God Bless.

In all my decades of using two ways in mobile settings, I have never dropped the mike on the floor. Lord knows I make enough clumsy moves in other areas though...LOL!

If any of you old dogs out there are using casette tapes, keep the magnet away, or some of your precious artists will sound worst than they already did...But then, it might be handy for the kid's Metallica tapes left in your ride..

Same for the mag stripe on your credit cards. If you sit on your mic and it damages your credit cards, you will have some explaining to do when your XYL has to use her card when you take her to dinner... ;D

The Calif Highway Patrol has promulgated an internal memo addressing Calif Vehicle Code section 23123.5 and mobile ham operators. See http://www.kkn.net/n6aa/pdf/CHP-Position-on-CVC23123-5_170328.pdf. The CHP Memo states in relevant part:

"For the purposes of Section 23123.5(f) CVC, a radio installed and mounted in a vehicle with a wired hand microphone (e.g., business band or citizen band [CB] radio) is not considered a wireless communication device, nor is it considered a specialized mobile radio device, and therefore is not subject to enforcement under this section."

As a ham and a Caluf attorney, I suggest Calif mobile operators print out and retain a copy of the CHP Memo in case they should be pulled over for operating mobile. The Memo does not alter the underlying Vehicle Code but is highly persuasive. The Memo should also be persuasive to local police. Note that operating mobile while using a HT is still a violation of Calif Veh Code section 23123.5.

Thanks for the tip on the magnet.

Velcro works well also.

@K6VCI. It is my understanding that the distracted driver law is at the discretion of the Peace officer.

No thanks. I would enjoy working DX while I commute to the Silicon Valley, but considering it is another law in California to help me part ways with my money. The most taxed state in the union.
