Undermining Housing Associations...

I have tried to get hams on the air over the years with what ever they have to use for an antenna with no success. If you are an expert at scheduling nets (I've tried everything) please try this in your area and across the country.

Here is what I propose, (this is not a joke) using indoor antennas for 160 meters (I use two outbacker antennas hooked in series) just get on and call CW.

Normally you wouldn't think you'd make any contacts but we may be surprised as more and more of us having to use repeaters make traditional CW contacts. Use the most power you can without causing TVI this could be less than 100 watts. If you have used indoor antennas on 40 and 75 meters you know how many contacts you can make as opposed the higher bands. On 160 we might be pleasantly surprised! Just forget about theoretical physics for once and have fun.

Here's net info:
1805 kHz every night/morning
3:00am pac time or 1100hrs UTC

Even if you have a 4000ft rhombic in your back yard, try hooking up an indoor antenna and join the group, why don't you run traffic handling and relay for hams with severe antenna restrictions with your monster antenna. Then if you make any contacts (I think we will) go to my Yahoo Group and let us know what happened.

"There are five to ten hams in one square mile of most areas"

Oh yes! If you can find a VLF transceiver 1750 meters this will work better, and since no license is required you can't beat actual on the air code practice.

I'm just betting on the lower layers of the f2 region to add and cancel groundwave and vertical radiation.

Undermining Housing Associations...

Sorry. This remains as puzzling (and uninteresting) as it was when you first posted it 2 weeks ago.

How does this undermine housing associations? What has any of this to do with housing associations? And didn't you admit the last time that you rent (not own) your home, which means that you didn't agree as an owner to HOA or CC&R restrictions anyway?

How do those with no 160 meter frequencies get on the air with anything?

Why not use 10 meters which Novices & Techs have access to, to maximize potential audience AND make a physically short antenna more practical?

Considering the severe power and antenna limitations for the 1750 meter band, how can this band possibly be used for anything practical? And how would we use it without upsetting the current experimenters on that band (both amateur and non-amateur)

What has 0300 PT / 1100Z got to do with any of this?

Outside of urban areas, what makes you believe that there are significant numbers of hams per square mile to make it worthwhile?

What makes you believe that you can arbitrarily repeal the laws of physics, which are not arbitrary except on Star Trek (and similar media where the pen is mightier than reality)?

Are we going to see this half-baked proposal repeated every few weeks after it "scrolls" off the screen... and why does eHam continue to promote it as a "interesting proposal" when it is anything but?

C'mon man! Make your case! You've done anything but!

If you want to promote late-night operating, and nets involving such, as a means to getting inactive and lightly active amateurs on the air, that's a great idea (though the execution needs some work). But what has that got to do with housing associations?

We keep seeing this drivel over and over and it still makes no sense. WD6EJN, come on man, go to the local community college and take introduction to english writing, your ability to communicate via the written word is very poor.

None of this posts makes any sense and I cannot see why eHam keeps putting these articles up. Doesn't someone proof read the content to see if it makes sense? If they do not why have article approval adminstators?

I'd say that the problem is the card is too large. There is a de facto standard in that the vast majority of amateurs world wide send cards that fit American 3-5/8" X 6-1/2" envelopes. However, when I first encountered larger cards, I began sending the longer "business size" envelopes and these work about 100% of the time. (I'd still rather have a folded card than none so I wouldn't complain).
Dx'ing, dx qsl'ing and going on dx'peditions isn't cheap. Cheap dx'ers will just find the going tougher.

Huh? "Repeaters to make traditional cw contacts?"

Huh?

Ten hams per square mile?

Huh?

In fact, just plain old, "Huh?"

I still don't get this post either. I'm very glad you like 160 meters. I think your trying to organize a net but I don't think your one of the people you refer to in your article as a person good at organizing nets.

I didn't think much about this either until I noticed 3 AM Pacific....how is transmitting in the dead of night using an indoor antenna going to undermine or make a statement about anything? At 3 AM, you could probably run 1.5 KW into a 75 foot crank up with a 3 element beam on 10 meters and nobody in your neighborhood would complain!!! Everyone's asleep!!

This solution isn't about undermining housing associations, it's about caving in to them.

Has anybody else looked up WD6EJN? I didn't think you were allowed to list "General Delivery" on your licence. I'm sure Larry Starkweather might be a nice guy, but I always wonder when a Ham appears to being hiding something (or him/her self).

As near as I can figure out, the writer thinks that the lower the operating frequency the better. Seems that the easy thing to do would be to use your house or apartment wiring as a giant antenna (remeber those ads?) and insert your handkey in a 60 Hertz outlet and let her rip. That ought to beat on air code practice!

WD6EJN is obviously from California. But i do not think it is as simple a matter as perhaps having had a heavy bout with the sauce the night before. So show some understanding. WD6EJN is not trying to talk gibberish and see "how low he can go" in freq. He succeeds in making the point that HAMs can and do operate in areas cursed with CC&Rs. Moreover I think his article is encouraging in this particular regard because it shows that CC&Rs can be circumvented and defied even on 160m. There is value to it. Just try to look beyond the fact that he is the poster-child for the typical quintessential tetrahydrocannabinolic Californian.

Re general delivery by US Post Office.
In my zip code 77367, there are NO deliveries outside the Riverside TX post office.
In Spring TX post office zip code 77380, the idea that mail is delvered to you home was jetisoned in favor of the end of the cheep trailer court style mail boxes, never mind the cheep homes start at $250,000 and 4 thousand square feet.

Now add to this the 911 address mapping schedule, which has not much in common with the post office schedule, and you have a call sign with General Delivery.

Just an observation of course.

I'm not sure how getting on 160m CW at 3 o'clock in the morning undermines housing associations, but next time I can't sleep, maybe I'll try it!

A better title would be, "Increase activity on 160 meters!" After all, it is a little-used band that many hams shy away from due to inadequate space for effective antennas. If all we really wanted to work was our neighbors, we could all use the equivalent of 160m "rubber duckies," and that should work just fine.

Just a comment. A P.O. Box address doesn't necessarily mean someone is "hiding" their identity.

As difficult as it may be to believe, there are STILL locations in this country that do NOT have individual Postal delivery, or street numbers, and HAVE to rely on a P.O. Box number. (And try to explain that to FED-UPS or when trying to apply for a rebate on computer equipment!)

I read WD6EJN's similar article several weeks ago and I didn't understand it then and I certainly don't understand this one now. And it is pretty obvious that I am not the only one.

To Scott, K9PO: I did go to the Yahoo group where I learned that the group has exactly two members and exactly two messages posted--both back in March. I did not join as I can already read WD6EJN's stuff here.

To Martin, KG6QKJ: IMHO Ham radio is 100% about communication. It's pretty clear that the problem here is a falure to communicate, or at least to communicate anything comprehendable. Even changing the subject line does NOT make the posting any better. And rather than defending WD6EJN, can YOU put his message into anything understandable?

I studiously avoided buying property in a CC&R community so this is not a problem for me. However, I've often wondered if anyone has tried making a motion at a HOA meeting that some or all of the CC&Rs be eliminated? This approach might work someplace where the cable TV service really sucks. The idea could be bundled with eliminating restrictions on wind chimes, bird feeders, and other such nonsense that builders put into the rules when they start HOAs and the home owners never think to change once they are no longer under the builder's thumb.

WD6EJN's location demystified
by N0TONE on May 8, 2003 Mail this to a friend!
WD6EJN is homeless. That's why he does not actually need to care about CC&Rs. His inability to communicate might explain why he is homeless. Camarillo is plenty warm all year 'round, and homelessness is common and in fact, is considered a chosen way of life.

This is not spectulation. To verify Larry's status, go to his Yahoo group (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/radiopenpals/).

Notice the link to Amazon? If you cut that URL out, and paste it into your browser, you go to an Amazon page where he is soliciting $50,000. His plea reads, "Please help this homeless ham. I have provided numerous projects and articles to the ham community but cannot continue to practice this field without your donation.".

This also explains why he has commented, in the past, that he has to use a library computer.

Larry, if you're homeless, where do you string your antenna? Where do you keep your rig, to avoid having people steal it? In fact, what kind of rig do you use?

Here's hoping that Larry can find adequate work to provide an income so that he can establish a fixed station and decent antennas.
