Preventing Theft of Your ATAS 100/120

I didn't leave the car alone for weeks after installing my ATAS 120 antenna. I was constantly worried that some passing joker would steal it. I came up with the idea of a cable type mount using about a 2-foot piece of 1/4" insulated cable and a few compression ferrules. The materials are available at Home Depot for about $5 and took about 10 minutes to put together. A padlock secures the cable to my mount on the spare tire carrier of a Chevy Tracker. It's hard to see in the pictures, that the lower lug nut on the spare tire also has a lock on the nut to prevent removal of the tire and mount.

Wrap the cable around the lower thin part of the antenna, compress the ferrules with the proper tool (or hammer...WATCH THE ANTTENNA AND FINGERS!) and you are set. The cable won't go above or below the thin part of the antenna. Since the cable is insulated, and the bottom of the ATAS null anyway, there is no interference from this cable.

No here is the important part... Yes, I am well aware that this won't stop a thief with heavy bolt cutters. But it will stop your antenna from being taken by the common neighborhood moron walking by as a random theft or vandalism. (As the old saying goes, if they want your antenna bad enough, they are going to get it. Although, I can't see fencing an ATAS at the local pawnshop!)

Please email me for additional pictures. kt4ht@yahoo.com

I have been worried about losing my antenna and you are right about the bolt cutters. If someone is willing to go to that extreme they are going to get it anyway. Sounds like a viable solution and I am going to try it today. This works out great as I was heading out for Home Depot in about an hour. I'm presently working on a project that my wife has been after me to complete. Now I get to go to HD and spend some time on something I'm passionate about. Thanks for the posting.

I have a High Sierra 1800Pro on my minivan. All it takes to remove it is a screwdriver blade on a knife and about 15 seconds. I have two Larsen antennas on the roof that will unscrew in about 10 seconds each.

I have made NO attempt to 'theft-proof' the antennas or the rigs in the car, nor do I lay awake at night worrying about it.

I have insurance on the vehicle, the rigs and the antennas.

Thx for the idea...

Unlike Lon though, I prefer not to spend my entire deductible on replacing something when a simple fix can safeguard it instead...

of course where I live, Smith & Wesson is our insurance agent so most people really think twice about dying over an antenna....

Actually guys I worry less about some idiot stealing the antenna than having my coax cut. To end that problem, I have encased my three coax lines in some old 1/2" steel bx cable I picked up out of the scrap heap on a project. You can buy it pretty cheaply at Home Depot or an electrical supply house.

Keep in mind that if you do have a theft and you are part of ARES or SKYWARN that the offender can be charged under the Patriot Act....I made a point to let that be known to a couple of the goofier types in my town and have noted that they tend to walk farther around my truck now.

I do like the idea of the cable fix though.

Good article, good idea!

I have found that none of the insurance writers in my state will not cover antennas, even roof mounted TV antennas. They will cover damage that my falling antenna caused, but not the antenna... and the Smith & Wesson Insurance Policy only works when the car is in the garage. The cops take a dim view of shooting the bad guy when there is no "immediate threat" - darn!

Did you know that a hobby laser power supply, attached to an antenna insulated above ground, is an EXCELLENT theft protection device... even drunken party goers remember not to touch the antenna again.

ARRL has a company on board that will insure every piece of ham equipment you including mobiles, ht's and antennas as well as computers and software, cheap. Go to www.arrl.org and search for "equipment insurance" under the "services" tab. Of course you have to be a member, but it probably still is cheaper that anyone else.

For a few extra bucks, you can get full comprehensive coverage on your auto insurance. I have State Farm, and the cost for this is less than the ARRL policy, but it may not be so in your part of the country. With full comprehensive, theft is covered 100% (no deductable).

Although you think this little hunk of cable doesn't effect efficiency, I suspect it does. However, since the ATAS is not very efficient in the first place, it probably makes little difference overall.

Mike,

I think that every OB or YL who has a major investement in a Mobile Ant setup worrys about their installation!!!

But frankly I'm not!!!

I've got a "High Sierra 1500S" on the rear-end of my 1995 JEEP Cherokee and eventhough I have it parked in our driveway here at home I've got absolutely no qualms about it!!! Our German Sheperd partols the perimeter of our house while we're asleep, and no matter where I go throughout my travels I've still have never worried about my Mobile installation including the HAM GEAR in it!!! The poor Bastard who may TRY to rip us off anywhere would be in for a RUDE awakening it they ventured to attempt it!!!

Regards!!!

Hoo-boy,

This is one of those "paranoid" crime is everywhere posts!

Does this poster really think that the world is full of kleptomaniac hams seeking ATAS antennas?

For crying out loud. Most people would think the guy with the funny antenna is such a weirdo that they'd cross to the other side of the street! The rest would figure it's a Queda rocket launcher and call the Home Security clowns!

What a waste of cable, ferrite beads (?) and locks!

This article was simply to present an idea to protect one's property from simple theft. Ham radio as a fraternity has knowledge sharing as its foundation.

I am truely sorry for offending the few who have replied negatively regarding my idea.

I've owned the ATAS 100 and now use the ATAS 120 system. The idea of someone coming along to steal it never crossed my mind (until now, I guess). It doesn't worry me. Thieves are not out to steal antennas in the thick of the night. They have bigger fish to fry..stereos, laptops left in cars, etc.
The ATAS 100 and ATAS 120 really isn't a big investment, in my opinion, to really go out and spend more on anti-theft devices.
If someone really wants it (wouldn't really know why) they'll get it no matter what.
Sorry..I've read a number of posts and articles on eham and most are very interesting and worthwhile but, with all due respect to the author, putting the "CLUB" on my ATAS 120 isn't a top priority in my life.

Sad to say, there are those who like to touch antennas, and sometimes with enough force to damage or even remove them... just because they're there. (I once had a 40 meter TenTec mobile antenna broken off at the base by a kid who did it "on a dare" just to see if he could. Ruined a nice trip home to see my dad and made a cross-state late night journey home long and dull, but I digress)

Those few truly determined to take the antenna will, and little or nothing you can do will stop them. But the suggestions made here will, hopefully, deter those who tend more towards pranks or semi-malicious vandalism, as opposed to out & out thieves.

In the past I have lost antenna to theft. The last time it happened It was to a friend. As I pulled up to his house I noticed two kids slip under his car. I leaned down and ask " what are you doing?" They came out of there and ran like the wind, then I noticed out of habit I had picked up my pistol on the way out of the car, little wonder they ran! And yes I know I can not use deadly force to protect property, but when you are living in a war zone you conduct yourseld a little different. As someone who grew up in the inner city I resent thieves. Antenna cost very little but it is the principle of the thing.

I would tend to think that one of those motion type car alarms would go off if someone was to attempt to "wiggle" or unscrew the antenna by bumping or jerking the car even slightly. If you don't have a car alarm, go out and buy car alarm stickers and paste them on your windows. If your handy with a soldering iron you could wire a "fake" flashing L.E.D. somewhere where it can be seen.

Obviously, you could have a forth knox security system and they might still end up getting your equipment anyways. The trick is to "reduce" the possibility of theft. No one can stop theft in every instance, but you might significantly reduce your odds by taking a few simple preventative measures.

Firstly, I would be inclined to remove the antenna with some sort of disconnect device. You know, if they "see" an antenna that is usually a "tip" to someone that there's something like a radio inside.

I suppose the best deterant is to make your antenna or radio as difficult as possible to remove. Usually, if it's not a quick "in and out" job, they will go elsewhere.

Hmmm. I wonder if those "locking" wheel nuts they use on car tires could somehow be incorporated into the mounting hardware for the antenna?

Personally, I would have been happy if someone would have taken my ATAS100. This antenna is the biggest hunk of junk I have ever had. After several years of fighting with it, I finally ripped it off my car and ordered a new Sidekick from High Seirra. And I don't take any steps to safe guard it either. I really don't leave my car to many places that it might be taken.

I'll never forget when I worked my first job fresh out of college back in the 80's at an upper Manhattan Cable TV master control room. Group W Cable was located in a declining neighborhood in Washington Heights, and we often had to park in the street, making our vehicles an easy target for thieves. After having had my car broken into and my FM/cassette car stereo stolen at least twice, I decided to set up a 'booby trap' for the perpetrator, as well as install a car alarm. I carefully set up a series of razor blades duct taped and recessed into a piece of balsa wood at the rear of the radio, and lo and behold, one evening as I scrambled to my car after the alarm rang my beeper, I noticed my radio half-out of it's socket (but still there), and a small trail of blood on the gear shifter and front seats! It worked! But now I had the new challenge of having to clean up blood from my front seat, and repairing the dent that the frustrated perpetrator inflicted on the side of my car after he presumably kicked-in due to his surprise and frustration! Thank god I drove a 'beater' back then, so my satisfaction was high, despite the 'mess' he left! These days, fortunately, car alarms have gotten much better.

Since most people other than hams don't know the difference between an anttena and a door knob, I doubt an antenna is of any value to a thief. Problem is that punk kids just want to damage things.

WARNING TO ALL I had my van in my yard, a fully finced in yard. My dog, a 140lb Irish wolf hound was rasing hell and I got my gun and let her out and called the cops. One the thiefs was so scared by the dog he slammed his foot in the door of the van. The cops got there, let the thief's go (under 18), sent my dog to the pound for being dangours and took me to jail for having a gun (I do have a permit) Bottm line is it cost me 5k for a lawyer and untold time to get off the hook and get my dog back. Not worth a few hundred in radio gear.
Needless to say I moved to a state that the home owner has some rights.
Turns out, I found out a few years later, one of the kids was the cops son's best friend ... go figure.
Happy news is both are in prison now for other crimes.

My experience of the ATS100 is that if someone steals it they will be doing you a geat favor. That antenna was the greatest disapointment I have had in Ham Radio in recent years.
Insure it and hope someone else gets it!!!!!!!!

The lawyers LOVE to get ahold of these Smith and Wesson cases....guess how many honest guys have gotten prison sentences or lost all their monetary assets through lawsuits because they shot the "bad" guy. Crazy as the world seems, that's how it seems to work.....you had better make sure the thief pulls a gun or knife on you before you pull the trigger or it might cost you everything you've got....IMHO, the lawyers protecting these guys are as guilty at the thieves themselves...but that is the world we live in.

Addendum to my previous post:

I have had multiple two-radio equipment of some kind or other (ham, land-mobile, law-enforcement, CB) in my vehicle(s) since the early '70s, with the attending porcupine array of antennas. I have parked in all manner of places.

I have lived all over Texas and several other states and have had exactly ONE theft/vandelism in all that time. In 1975 someone stole a CB rig out of one vehicle and left all the rest.

I worry more about good rig performance that I do theft or vandelism.

Padlocks - unless you spent between 50 and 80 dollars for one are generally useless to a skilled thief. Why?

I don't sit and worry about my equipment, mobile or base, but I will say this - I lived in an apartment a year ago, and I had a bag of apples sitting outside on the air conditioner. It was cold, and I put them out there to keep a little longer. Well, within a couple of days, someone had STOLEN that bag of apples. I'm the type that , if someone was that hungry, I'd have just given them the whole thing. But just the fact that someone was low enough to steal something like a bag of apples just goes to show what some people are capable of. Some people will snap the whip off your antenna just for the hell of it, or because your vehicle is better than theirs, or whatever. Collectively, people just have less and less common sense. THAT is most of the trouble that you find on the bands - people in general just don't have common sense nor common courtesy or respect for anyone else.

As far as equipment, I don't know anyone who would really want to steal my stuff, for personal use or to sell. But I DO worry about vandals.

The crazy world we live in dictates that you would in fact be the criminal in this case. This is similar in context to connecting a shotgun with a string to your front door so that when a criminal breaks in they are shot.

Someone told me once about how they put 120 VAC with an inverter through thier antenna when it was parked to prevent others from "touching" it.

While electric fences are legal for the cattle population, this sort of behaviour will only result in injury to another person and could land you with a criminal record... Go figure.

A hidden tripwire connected to 150 pounds of C4 in the trunk will solve your problem. Although you may have trouble finding the parts to your vehicle scattered over a mile radius after the blast.(not to mention the thief) And the resulting crater can be rather annoying. Make sure you park far away from home when this is activated for obvious reasons. You can then blame the resulting explosion on Muslim terrorists and get your insurance company to buy you a new car and a new mobile rig.

FWIW, I receive excellent signal reports off of my ATAS-100. I've had it over a year with no problems at all. It's all in the setup and grounding. Is it the best mobile HF antenna? No......but it's not the piece of garbage some of you describe. If you don't want yours, send it my way. I'll put it to good use.

What is amusing is all of the subsequent posts that speak about vandalism rather than theft!

The original poster was concerned about someone "taking" is beloved ATAS antenna - as if they "valued" it.

So he went to all extremes to lock and nail it down.

So what?

Nothing he proposes will prevent some kid (or group thereof) from "trashing" it!

As I said. This is a paranoid's complaint.

Perhaps an ATAS depleted his bank account such that he feels it is the most important thing he owns.

If so, he should devise a quick-release system and remove it when not in use!

Elsewise, nothing anyone here has said will assuage his fears - because his real concern is damage and/or destruction - not theft!

Why does every ham in 4 and 5-land have to deal with such "up front" crime that they need a gun and a German Shepard (or Rotweiler equivelent) at the ready?

I live in 2-land, actually right in the heart of NYC. You guys know; it's where the BC networks "place" all those crime "dramas" to warn you all off from urban America.

Living and working here we NEVER seem to encounter the level of confrontational street crime that all these 4 and 5 landers do.

Frankly, it's a bit like living out on the prairie way back East here. Nothing much seem to happen!

Am I missing something by living in NYC?

I also have the ATAS-100, mounted on a 2002 Explorer.
I've had vandalism done to a roof-mounted dual-band antenna, but not to the ATAS.

I'm sad to say that two weekends ago I removed the ATAS and put it in the back of the car. The reason was that the car was parked at our club's annual hamfest, and there could be someone who knew what the antenna was and wanted one. We had a constable watching the lot, but I still took it down.

I like the cable idea, though.

I'm developing a custom mounting bracket for use with the Explorer, and perhaps a security feature would be a Good Thing. How about a set screw with a security head?

I've had an ATAS-120 for a year now. I've never worried about it being stolen (and I live in 5-land, thank you). Here's why I don't worry about it:

1. A thief isn't going to steal something he can't easily fence. What car stereo fence would give a theif even $5 for an ATAS-120? They won't even know what it is.

2. It won't easily fit under a jacket, and what thief wants to be seen by a cop walking through a neighborhood with a big black stick?

3. How many people know you can just unscrew it? It doesn't look that simple to unmount.

4. Most cars with antennas belong to some sort of law enforcement officer. Maybe I'm naive, (and my car isn't a white Crown Victoria) but it is my belief that a thief might shy away from cars with antennas.

Now that I've added my $0.02, it will probably get stolen next week. But after all, it is just an antenna, and if it gets stolen, it is not the end of the world. At worst, I'm out $250. At best, I get to experiment with some other type of antenna.

Why I remember one time before KT4HT dug the moat around his compound he couldn't get his dog to chase interlopers more than about 100 yards down the road from that transformer station he built for his electric fence that was the source of that pesky QRN between Miami and Orlando that he'd been so upset over that every time he'd pour the boiling oil over the southern wall at the rig snatchers down there in 4 land he'd get the ground slippery and the dog couldn't get traction and dogs like traction and they get pretty peeved without it so KT4HT built a pretty decent dog traction device that should let them get a grip on the road to chase them interlopers that are longing for is ATAS 100/20 as long as he's not using 10-40 oil or something like that, for for that matter should never be using anything on 20 meters sideband CW AM monomode QSK smokeshifter type 3 that has 10-4 in it unless asked to or volunteered by that FCC guy named Ray. Yup that explained everything to KT4HT right then and he never did it again.

Now that reminds me of another story about about KT4HT........

As the author states, the biggest fear isn't someone who WANTS the antenna (or radio or whatever). It is the dork who decides while passing by that it would be fun to screw with somebody's stuff just for the thrill of it. I had my truck broken into a few years back and they didn't take anything other than the microphone body itself. The turkey just cut the cable right at the mic body and left the cable attached to the radio and the radio attached to the underdash mount. It was a quick release mount so it would have come right out easily.

I have a ATAS-100 and FT-100D installed remotely in the trunk. I live in a relatively safe town and don't have people around much out where I live so I don't worry at the house (especially since I have an alarm system backed up by the Colt .45ACP burglar deterrent system).

However, when I go to town or down south to a large city (and don't have Mr. Colt with me - California you know), I remove all three antennas and put them in the trunk (with the trunk remote access disabled) and put the FT-100D control head, the TM-G707A control head and the SIRIUS satellite radio control unit in the LOCKED glovebox. I figure this way if someone REALLY wants my toys, they are going to EARN them.

I have been around radios since 1968 and had one 11M antennas vandalized and stolen, knew who was suspect, but you know what I just let it go. since then I moved 60 miles away to a large city one battery stolen, ane useless CB stolen, and 2 tool boxes.

I lock my doors and at the present job I have Law Enforcement patrols come by they have the K9 dog, and a few are scared of me anyway.

at my job I'd say past 6 months 10 people were arrested on State Owned Property for misc. charges.

people see my black car with the common 5/8 2M. ant they think I have Police Freqs. right away , seat belts are on before exiting and they don't want to get pulled over, and I have a 10M. ant with a twist off mount just for parking areas where a Big Antenna would break off.

At Home I lock my car and I live 200 feet or better in a Rural Farm area the Intersection is a Patrol Car spot for 4 way stop sign violators, Sheriff patrol or State troopers stop in a store nearby for whatever, also few of us neighbors would call 911 let alone my neighbors dog barks at anyone by the road.

I also managed to tell them one car If ever spotted that to call 911 anyway, besides a dozen cats some people are alergic or don't want to get near them, and they are excellent mousers, let alone once in a while they may get muddy paw prints all over their car and window was left open they may leave a heavenly smell especially the Kitty with a white stripe down its back. never know what they may even step on !

The dates on the posts prove how timeless this topic is. I have yet to have anyone mess with my trucktop antennas, but it takes a small stepladder to get up there. Another ham at work used a neon sign transformer and a remote switch at home. When his vehicle alarm paged him, he'd peek outside, identify his target, and give him a squirt. He said it was always easy to tell which way they stumbled off from the trail of drying pee and scat.

State Farm sold me a writer on my policy for $1500 worth of coverage on the ham gear. It's better than nothing I'd say!
