Dead Electrical Dudes No. 5

This Month's Stiff: Georg Simon Ohm
Entered Mortal coil: 16 March 1789
Assumed Room Temperature: 6 July 1854
One of the favorite movies of my misspent youth was National Lampoon's Animal House. In this film, we see fraternity boys carousing, drinking, womanizing, gambling, and generally not taking anything seriously. Not surprising is the fact that most of the boys have abysmal grades, and that their fraternity has been placed on “super secret” probation. Georgy would have fit right in. Ohm's father, Johann, was a self-educated working class man, i.e. blue collar, who had apparently busted his chops getting Georgy into Erlangen University. The old man was fed up with rumors of his son's excessive dancing, ice skating, and pool playing. After only three semesters, Georgy was pulled out of school and sent to Switzerland where he more or less had to grow up.
What followed after this enforced leave of absence from Erlangen was a series of unsatisfying teaching posts as young Ohm drifted through life. All he wanted was a full professorship at a prestigious institution. Ohm further educated himself and conducted independent research while holding a teacher's position at the Jesuit Gymnasium of Cologne starting in 1817. Publishing his research, Georgy realized, would get him that coveted post….and research he did! In 1827, after a considerable amount of labor, head scratching, and experimentation, he published his results in the paper Die galvanische Kette, mathematisch bearbeittet. This was quite a mouthful, even in German (read Mark Twain's essay, “The Awful German Language”, if you really want to laugh). Anyway, the end result of all that formal written Hun verboseness was
Volts = Amperes times Ohms.
This simple little formula defines all things electrical and electronic. If you don't know it, learn it, or at least do a little bit of research on your own. I can't do everything for you kids, okay?
Unfortunately, this electrical thunderbolt out of the blue went largely unnoticed, and Ohm's theory was greeted with less than rampant enthusiasm from his professional peers. In 1841, the Royal Society awarded Georgy the Copley Medal, acknowledging his contributions in electrical research. In 1852, Ohm achieved his lifelong dream and became the Chair of Physics at the University of Munich. The Reaper had the last laugh as poor Ohm only got to enjoy the fruits of his labor for two years before being mowed down by the aforementioned Reaper's scythe in 1854. Poor Georgy!!!!!
Ohm's Theory is now Ohm's Law. Learn it. Live it. Don't ever forget it!!!

While I was Chief Engineer of an FM broadcast station, we had to apply ohms law for our DJ's to monitor the transmitter power output. The Jocks had to multiply Plate Voltage by Plate Current and then an "efficiency factor". The Jocko's then had to determine if the Xmtr was outputting a legal amount of power, then log the readings every three hours.
Most of the DJ's were lucky if they could tie their shoes or order a pizza correctly over the telephone.....let alone apply Ohm's Law and read transmitter meters!
Just another application of this Dead Dude's theory in real life.

DED's is the reason I look forward to logging onto EHAM in the mornings... Not that the aren't a number of worthwhile features and resources, but it's the member contributions that make this a great place. Just decided to subscribe and send in an end of year check and this is the biggest reason... Keep'em coming!

There seems to be a lot of confusion over which is "Ohm's law", some say it's P = I x E, others say it's E = I x R.
Some call P = I x E the "Power equation" some call it "Watt's law", some call it "Ohm's law".
I wasn't around when either Mr. Watt or Mr. Ohm was doing his best work, so I can't say for sure. I am under the impression that the unit "watt" was named for James Watt, not named by him. So, I call P = I x E "the power equation", but if others choose to call it "Watt's law", I have no problem with it.
I would like to know the definitive historically correct answer, if anyone would like to post it!

KD5WIH

Those people are very confused.
> others say it's E = I x R.
Those people are less confused, but still confused.
By the way, E = I x R is *NOT* Ohm's law in DC either. But, as I said before, it's a simplification that's close enough for those who don't do real electronics.

I've noticed that if I place the probes from my VOM on the aluminum Coors can (positive on top, negative near the bottom), different levels of impedance can be obtained depending on the 'liquid-level' inside the container apparatus. Perhaps I should experiment more with the 'Coors Antenna.'

Define "real electronics" please, so we can understand your chain of thought and what exactly you are trying to say? Is this an esoteric exercise?
Let's see.....Laplace transforms for ac analysis as well as differential equations (urgh!), Norton's and Thevinin's equivalent circuits, power factors, phasors (not phasers-this ain't Star Trek)etc., ad nauseum, etc., etc. All used variations of that powerful little equation.

I don't know!
I was taught Ohm's law as V = I x R etc. It seems that the U.S. might use E instead of V for volts. Other than that it all looks 'real' to me.

You were taught a simplification. That's not Ohm's law. And no, I'm not talking about something dumb like using a different variable name for voltage.
Someone else touched on the reason, but from the way they posted it's pretty clear that it was an accident that they regretted.

I have been told, rather forcefully, that "real hams" know Morse code. In the same vein, "real electronics" is practiced by those who know what Ohm's law actually is.

Well, at least you haven't called me a wanker here yet. Is that because you did the homework and found out where your country killed millions of people in 1946?
Don't send me money. If you're feeling charitable, the international red crescent could use money towards relief in Iran.

It's an Irish thing. Satire and parody are very constructive. If you don't think so, I've got a modest proposal for you.

"troll" doesn't mean what you think it means.

Indeed. Which, given your response, goes to show that you can prove a point without your audience getting it.

NEWS FLASH....OHMS LAW REPEALED!
Problem is that this draconian law is only repealed at absolute zero Kelvin.
So if you do like the ultra cold weather, you could draw 22 amps for your rig with 28 guage wire.
Problem is, as soon as you call CQ your lungs shatter into chunks of ice.
Aldouse Huxley wrote about S(ohm)a
Tail pipes are plated with chr(ohm)
The color portion of video is called chr(ohm)a
Now matter how you slice it, you cannot escape OHM.
Hey Philip, as much as we both hate Sarnoff, are you going to do one on this Radio Robber Barron.
You also have the 3 dudes that invented the transistor. Shockly,Bratton, and bardeen. Shockly is still alive. The 3 won the nobel prize for the transistor.
Shockly shocked the world when he offered his seed for
couples that wanted smart children. There is no scientific proof that this would work.
Another dead dude history over looked was BOOLEN.
The inventor of boolen algebra. He was laughed at how
1 and 0 =0 1 or 0 =1. We all know this is the basis of digital computers.
Keep em comin' MIKE

K5AN, to answer your quesion about the first dead dudes to "ride the lightening"(electric chair).
A few hangings got botched up. So a more humane way of execution was sought. Electricity was a new technology. It was very political to use the electric chair. Many M.D.'s were certain that it would be a horror show. Yet other scientist said it would be quicker and more humane than hanging.
Edison was trying to push his DC power distibution scheme. Which ohms law shows that high tension AC is much better.
Edison made up a fib that AC was more deadly. So guess what? At the turn of the century the first electrocution used 1100VAC.
Philip confirmed to me that a special generator had to be imported from south america.
In the past some states had to have their own generator because the power companies would not deliver
voltage specifly for execution.
It took over 30 seconds for the condemned to stop convulsing. He did not go quietly! The smell made many sick. The first electrocution was done at Ossining prison in NY. Ossining is known as SING SING.
They did an autopsy. They found his brain was hard boiled like an egg His eye balls were bulging out of his head. Needless to say the body was very dehydrated!
The reason for the hood is two fold. One is for the condemned. The second is so the witnesses do not have to see the bulging eyeballs and frothing and bleeding
from the mouth and nose.
The standard today is 2200VAC. Believe it or not, they hire an electrical engineer to test the chair before each execution. Perhaps a thevenans equivalent
model is used. The condemned being the load.
Have a nice day!

Mike:
With all due disrespect,I ain't doin' Sarnoff. He didn't invent anything, only new ways to cheat people out of their intellectual property. After what he did to Armstrong, all he is good for in my opinion, to paraphrase Shakespeare, is worm food.
Ampere is next after Volta, who is NEXT.
Future possible articles include DUDES Heiny Hertz, Faraday, Oersted, Fessenden, Galvani, Lee Deforest, the three transistor stooges as you suggested-that will be hard, one or two may still be alive....We have to cover the GIANTS first, the ones our units are named after. So, realistically, my writing order should've been done chronologically. Also, even more realistically, some of these guys lived droll or sad lives, so its REAL hard to juice 'em up, ie Armstrong who was run up the river by RCA. I do have a heart, Mike, and as one of our esteemed colleagues up the page has already noted....
Ohm is where the heart is.

How is Goodwin's Law a "LAW" in the strictest sense of the word, IP?
Einstein's Theory of Relativity is not a "LAW", but I'm sure its thought of a lot, as it released the mushroom cloud from that neat shiny piece of uranium or plutonium.
By this definition, you can put down anyone's opinion as invalid just because you don't like them, which is a tactic the far liberal left has been using for years in their doctrine of political correctness.....
Besides, TROLLBAITER was right about you anyway. Your brain is so much mush, like a hard boiled egg, as JJH described a high current's effect on the brain of the condemned. Have you come across any HV distribution primary lately? Why are you still alive?
Anyway, I fought the LAW, but I WON.
Sincerely,
DB

Pan, Didn't I see you in "A Midsummer's Night Dream"?
Troll, troll, troll the ded gently through the theme.
Merrily, merrily, merrily these puns are losing steam!
Phil, you might be able to con Edison, but I think you
cannot con TROLL! (Don't you just hate these con TROLL issues?) It is probably time to cut the OHMbilical cord on this baby. At least Mr. Ohm did
not foresee AC so he could not have been INDUCED into
this mortal coil. Since it was all DC, does this mean
that his heir coil actually did reach saturation?
Anyway, that is his teresis, not mine!
Just don't forget good old ELI the ICEman in your
Ded Dude series. They did have a capacity for dealing
with mortal coils. Be sure to deal with their permeability, also. That way we could all commune with our Mu's! :-@ The trolls could really FLUX their muscles on that, too. Especially if they were made of FERRITE stuff.

> How is Goodwin's Law a "LAW" in the strictest sense

There is no 'strictest sense' of the word 'law'. It's a term of art. You might recall art: short guy, liked to hang out with children, used to say the darndest things
> Einstein's Theory of Relativity is not a "LAW", but
> I'm sure its thought of a lot, as it released the

Uranium is dull, like your understanding of the jargon of science, not shiny, like the paint on Enola Gay.
> By this definition, you can put down anyone's
> opinion as invalid just because you don't like them,
Alice, you forgot to give a definition, so there's no "this definition". But if you want to understand the difference between theory and law in science, I suggest the "What is Science" FAQ from talk.origins. Or, perhaps, you merely side with Humpty Dumpty.
Anyway, I just wanted to say I knew D.B. Cooper, (met him in Idaho after he landed,) and you sir are no D.B. Cooper.

By definition in Ohm's Law, 1 ohm equals 1 volt divided by 1 ampere. In other words, a device has a resistance of 1 ohm if a voltage of 1 volt will cause a current of 1 ampere to flow.
Thomas Edison admitted that he did not even understand Ohms law and overlooked this discovery.
In 1882, when one of his engineers, William Hammer, observed the "Edison Effect" during the course of experiments about the incandescent lamp, Edison, for reasons which he could not later explain, uncharacteristically did not follow up on the discovery.
The Edison effect remained an unexplained curiosity for fifteen years until the discovery of the electron.
For the first time, accurate definitions of current strength, electrical resistance, and electro-motive force were clearly stated, and the numerical relationship between them conclusively established. Ohm's findings were completely disregarded for a number of years.
Ohm spent much of his earlier time time dancing, ice skating and playing billiards rather than concentrating on his studies.
Ohm's father, angry that his son was wasting the educational opportunity that he himself had never been fortunate enough to experience, demanded that Ohm leave the university of Erlangen after three semesters.
After three semesters Ohm gave up his university post. He could not see how he could attain a better status at Erlangen as prospects there were poor while he essentially lived in poverty in the lecturing post. The Bavarian government offered him a post as a teacher of mathematics and physics at a poor quality school in Bamberg and he took up the post there in January 1813. This was not the successful career envisaged by Ohm at the time.
As he had done for so much of his life, Ohm continued his private studies reading the texts of the leading French mathematicians Lagrange, Legendre, Laplace, Biot and Poisson. In 1820 Oersted discovered electromagnetism, and shortly afterwards, Becquerel and Barlow began their researches into the conductivity of various metals. Everywhere experimenters were making new discoveries in the young science of electricity.
Yet there was also much confusion. Terms like 'tension', 'intensity', 'quantity', and 'exciting force' were used to describe various attributes of electricity, but no one was clear about the exact meanings of the terms and their relationships.
In the first, he measured the 'intensity' of electricity in a wire connected between the terminals of a voltaic pile. To measure the intensity he measured the deflection in a magnetic needle held over the wire. (He later improved the method by attaching the needle to a torsion balance.)
His decision to measure the loss in intensity rather than the intensity itself led him to a logarithmic relation which held only because of the high internal resistance of the voltaic pile. The pile was very cumbersome.
In the second of the series of experiments, Ohm determined the lengths of wires, made from different metals, that gave the same current. Ohm called these various lengths 'equivalent lengths.' Once Ohm put this experimental results together and decided to consider measuring actual intensity rather than loss in intensity, he was able to phrase his famous law in the form I = E/R.
What is now known as Ohm's law appears in this famous book "Die galvanische Kette, mathematisch bearbeitet" (The Galvanic Circuit Investigated Mathematically) (1827) in which he gave his complete theory of electricity. Despite Ohm's attempts in this introduction, he was not really successful in convincing the older German physicists that the mathematical approach was the right one.
Ohm's law was met with resistance. Many of his countrymen were used to experimenting with voltage and current, but they considered these to be entirely separate phenomena. One science 'critic' reviewed Ohm's book, claiming that its "sole effort is to detract from the dignity of nature." Ohm's feeling were hurt, he decided to remain in Berlin and, in March 1828, he formally resigned his position at Cologne. He took some temporary work teaching mathematics in schools in Berlin.
Electricity was not the only topic on which Ohm undertook research, and not the only topic in which he ended up in controversy. Ohm also experimented with optics, acoustics, and the electrical conductivity of liquids, though he didn't achieve any real progress in these fields. In 1843 he stated the fundamental principle of physiological acoustics, concerned with the way in which one hears combination tones. However the assumptions which he made in his mathematical derivation were not totally justified and this resulted in a bitter dispute with the physicist August Seebeck.
On July 7, 1854, Georg Ohm passed away in Munich, at the age of 65. It wasn't until 1881, after his death, when the Electrical Congress in Paris voted to adopt the 'ohm' as the international standard of electrical resistance.
