This Month's Stiff: Heinrich Rudolph Hertz
Entered Mortal coil: 22 February 1857
Assumed Room Temperature: 1 January 1894
Heinrich Rudolph Hertz
Perhaps the burning question on my mind is why did a lot of the early
electrical pioneers sport such interesting beards? Put a rifle in the
picture and I can just imagine Heiny walking out of the piney woods after
distilling a few hundred gallons of 'shine.
As you may recall, the existence of electromagnetic waves was predicted
mathematically by James Clerk Maxwell and was discussed in the first of this
series of irreverent articles. Mathematicians, physicists, and scientists
will, on occasion, develop elegant formulae that don't amount to much except
to illustrate some arcane concept with no practical application. However,
such was not the case in this particular instance. Heiny took Maxwell's
headache-inducing formulae and proved that they did, in fact, describe a
natural phenomenon.
Hertz was born in Hamburg, Germany. At an early age it became apparent that
the boy was scientifically inclined. Young Heiny enjoyed building
instruments of various types in the family workshop.
Hertz began his formal education in 1877 at the University of Munich where
he studied engineering. Only a year later, Hertz abandoned engineering
(blasphemy!) and began his study of natural sciences at the University of
Berlin, studying under Helmholtz and Kirchoff (sound familiar?) where he
earned his Ph.D, with magna cum laude honors. His mom must have been a very
proud woman! A topic of intense interest in the scientific community at the
time was determining whether or not Maxwell's equations were valid. In 1883,
the young scientist also directed his attention to this course of research.
In 1887, Hertz conducted his now famous experiment in which two antennas
were placed a few feet apart. The first part of the device consisted of
essentially a crude spark gap transmitter connected to the first antenna.
The receiving antenna was a loop with a couple of electrodes on the wire
ends placed very close together. Hertz activated the transmitter and it
generated sparks. Sparks were also seen leaping across the electrode gap at
the receiving antenna. Further experiments were conducted in which it was
determined that the invisible waves could be reflected and refracted in a
manner similar to that of light waves, and finally that light waves were
also electromagnetic in nature. Maxwell's theories were finally vindicated
eight years after his death! Hertz's findings were published in 1892 in his
book, Untersuchungen Ueber Die Ausbreitung Der Elektrischen Kraft
(Investigations on the Propagation of Electric Energy).
Mockup of Hertz's Classic Experiment
Unfortunately, Hertz died young at the age of 37 from blood poisoning.
Associates and friends remember the professor as amiable and modest, and
people seemed to be naturally attracted to him. In his honor, the unit of
frequency measurement, the Hertz, was named after him.
A young Italian boy read about Hertz's experiments and it galvanized his
attention. I'll give you three guesses who that boy was!

Another nice piece. I knew about the hertz experiment.
I guess he discovered resonance and crude radio.
He just did not put a JJ-38 in series with the HV coil.
He did think to have the secondary coil register a dit or a dah.
So will Maxwells multiple differential equations were didly to most, Maxwell perdicted electromsgnetic wave theory
I guess that is why we measure freqs. in KILO-HERTZ,
NOT KILO-MARCONIES! OR KMS.
There is a cycle to hertz converter on EHAM in a humor section. Maybe I should post a SMITH CHART for non active linear DC circuits!

This thread is in the twilight zone of the ethernet. I have seen in only twice listed on the DED #6 site. Boy did that take me back to the 60's. Anyway, great threads Phil and I look forward to more. Seems like Hz and Maxwell had a thing going and I really like the and then there was light thing with Max's forms. Keep up the irreverance. These guys deserve it!

There once was a scientist named Hertz
who once cut loose with some famous blurts
while he was still amongst us - a breather
he said tell Crawford Long
here is something else to do with the ether!
It may not be a great limerick, but it can knock you
out! Remember please, about 1/3 of limerick is ICK!

Well, I have enjoyed all these articles. It takes me back to a youth spent learning of these men which led to a formal education in electronics. I submit that as long as there are children who dare to learn and apply what these men contributed their work is still ongoing.
It is a shame that today's Schools are so Dumbed Down that many of the Children of today will never be exposed to the works of these great men. Remember when you HAD to take a Physics class to Graduate?
Todays youth in my opinion lack imagination. They are so content to be entertained and Led by others they can't think for themselves. When you try to get them interested in something that requires thought they get all glass eyed and start squirming.
Again thanks for the well written articles about the early pioneers of Electronics and Radio. I Look forward to your article on Marconi. My reading of him when I was 12 was what sparked my interest in radio.
Thanks for reading my long diatribe

The breed of shark known as PAY-A-MUS MAXIMUS, has a bad rap.
The loan shark is even tempered, under certain conditions.
Unfortunitly, one of the many certain conditions is that looking at the PAY-A-US MAXIMUS the wrong way or too long can lead to problems.
Victims of the PAY-A-US MAXIMUS, tend to vanish without a trace!
No scientist today can explain this instant vanish
persona non grata phenonenon!

K2WH is to be admired for a consistant stance!
It is a good question, what will be the new hip thing
to call a dead dude in 100 years. A phenotyicalsapisn or P.E.S.A.
If I were to be written about after I am dead electrical dude, I really do not think I would have much say in the matter!(HI-HI)
So our friend K2WH is always welcome to his opinion.
OK DUDE!!!
One nice thing about this series is that MR ED from the Newington Conn. Old boy network cannot arrow quote

They are/were well respected engineers in their fields, in their time. As an electrical engineer myself, I do not consider myself a "Dude" now or when I am dead. I know the title of this posting is supposed to be funny and to some it may be but not to me.
How about "Engineering Genius' Who Used to be Alive but are Now Dead" as a title.
Keep the word "Dude" on the slopes or while using your boogie board in the surf. And did you tell Rush Limbaugh you are stealing his line "Assumed Room Temperature".

Ed Hare is a very knowledge Amateur, engineer, and author, and is a very good public speaker. His no nonsense factual approach which avoids politics is to be admired, IMO. I'm not sure what your beef is with him, but he has done more for this service than most Hams. The League has done more for the Amateur service than any other organization and it's likely Amateur Radio wouldn't exist today without it. But what does this have to do with Mr. Hertz ?

K3NG ,Your right. Has nothing t do with Hertz.
I do find MR EDS excessive arrow quoting on eham annoying. MR ED and I have had many arguments. I just have a pet pevee with excessive arrow quoting.
The guy never says he is wrong or made a mistake.
He will arrow quote on the most frivilous.
He selectively leaves out, correct points a poster has made.He takes things out of contest and warps them to the his I am the ultimatte authority!
Lets just agree to diagree on this one O.M.
You like him. I do not! I have the same RF experience as he, as well as lab equipment.
You are right K3NG. I will leave my anger of MR ED out of humor postings. However when he does a personal attact on me, I hit back hard and do not quit!
I just find the DED series GREAT!
OK MR EDS EXCESSIVE arrow quoting on EHAM makes my head HERTZ! OK enough said!!!!!
Oh the chart on Hertz to C.P.S conversion is back up on EHAM.

They did get UHF fequencies, up about 500MHZ T band
They called that microwaves. Do they did experiment

There was a young ham from Swindon
Who put some slow CW up his windom
The answer was none
And when he was done
He wondered what all this fuss about CW is for if some of the people who really know what they are doing can't be bothered to answer a learner. I sent a perfect 12wpm and got nothing. Not for just a little while you understand but for over an hour. Propagation? No - the band condition was not great but I could hear enough to know that others had heard my 100W. So, every one on 40Mtrs in my part of the world:
Thanks very much.
Does it rhyme?

peotry does not always have to rhyme
It can a bunch of psuedointellectual slime!
when you write of the cuff, you dont have the time.
a couple of non sequeter pro's aint a literary crime.
If your not carefull your poem aint worth a dime.
When your on stage and screw up a line, you pantomime.
You can always go on with a limerick from nantuaket!
watch out for you P's and Q's other wise you will lose!
Then you have to do a cheap trick and sing the blue's
hey pal when your on stage, be carefull what you choose
You will go so broke, you be wearing old bowling shoes!
ah Yes mr heiney Hertz, had his little RF spirts.
he did not follow though and marconi left him the dirts
I guess the moral of the story is to always follow thru
Other wise you will be sniffing glue and no food to chew!
another problem is if you dont know when to end your piece,
you had your vocal release, somebody called the word police!

And if it don't rhyme
'cause your head is in the foggerel,
you can always just write some doggerel!
DUDES, It is just OFFAL how you sometimes CARRION!
Speaking of pleasant repasts and Dead Dudes,
did you hear the one about the condor who went on
vacation? On the way to the airport he stopped along
the road and picked up a critter du jour pizza.
He took his snack with him to the airport. When he was
boarding the airplane the flight attendant stopped him
and said, "Sir, you cannot bring that disgusting
mess on board!" To which the condor replied,
"Why not? It is CARRION!"

There was a hun scientist named Hertz
Who sported a beard and pressed shirts.
He created sparks via battery and coil
Day and night he worked and toiled.
Noting a discharge at the second wire,
It duplicated the first arcs fire.
"Das gutt, Wunderbar!" He was heard to yell..
All were mesmerized by the wireless spell.
So now we hear voices and music from far away,
We can hear the world both night and day.
It all began with this first radio dude,
Surely his treatise had great verisimilitude.
So remember young Hiney when you get on the air,
And communicate with your friends here and there.
It surely is wonderful to be a wireless buff,
I love it! I love it! I can't get enough!!

I have real these thru and thru,
They must continue no matter what else you do.
The liven up the board for all of us,
And relieve us also of a lot of stress & fuss.
So keep posting these type of stories
And we can enjoy and regale in their glories.
We may even offer a few unknown kinks,
That we're really parts of their past with real links
To what we do here as loyal radio ops,
I must admit as well these stories are tops.
Is that pitiful or not.

Smoke crack all day and my body is a wreck
but ya got to see me hustle to get my welfare check
cant afford no apartment, cant afford my meals
But I got my self a beeper, to make them drug deals!
You see my gold tooth when I break out in a smile
when ever I rid the subway, I jump yhe turnstyle!
Went down in the subway, thout no one was lookin,
The next thing you know I get arrested and I am in central booking!

There was a man named hieny hurtz
such a big butt, a phart it would spirts.
he was found that he liked to wear skirtz
he would also steal and wear his sisters shirts
So picture big butted heiny hertz in womans clothing
His tranvestite attire would always bring out loathing!
Heiny Hertz had a real penchent for cabbage and beans.
Heiny would get his favorite food dish by all means!
After his meal many would feel the air around him was rank!
When he would really cut one, the whole Village stank!
one day was un lucky for heiney hertz.
Big butt in a tarten skirt, many towns-man got some certz!
Between being a tranny and his butt that would pump gas
The owns people wanted someone to kick his big ass
Excuse the pun, but heiney hertz got WIND of this plan
Heiny knew he was done for,he had to go to another land
So heiny did all this electrical one sad day
he had his usual meal, and he was feeling happy and gay!
He generated a huge spark gap, he felt like he had to crap
Add the sparks and gas,and you all know the wrap!
He was blown to bits all over the town square!
The towns people had enough rank, so they did not care!
The laughed and appluded when he was at mach.1 in the air!
All said he was poisoned by a strange evil source!
They brougth in a coroner on a very large hourse!
It was not natural causes, it was simply his wife wanted a devorce!

culturally hip title of the day?
Granny was calling guys "Dudes" on the Beverly Hillbillies TV show in the early sixties. A few more years and we’re talking a half century ago!
I am trying to envision a culturally *hip* youngster of today thinking a middle aged Amateur radio enthusiast is "hip" (Woaaa flashback to the sixties again!) because he is attempting to emulate youth by using slang from the sixties in 2004?
ha ha...he he..ho hO HO...arr har hardy Har har... laugh laugh, funny funny, giggle *giggle*
This and the poetry is a shinning example of why white people are perceived as UN-cool (and/or gay).

Great Article!
Have any other bios of interest?
A collection Ham Bios would make for a great book
as well as Scientists/engineers/geeks/who developed
our wonderful pastime in telecommunications! Having said that, mom-&-apple-pie kind of statement, what
ever happened to Captain America, the geek from Florida who took over the uplink signal of a TV broadcast station a few years ago. The unlawful activities of the inspired, are also good reading
and inspiration of their own. Famous, Pirates, Slims,
and Mad Scientist-geeks or Mad enginner-geeks are inspiring, although one wonder what they might have really developed if their apples were not rotton! So can Kilowatts and poorly tuned gear really make bed springs hum! Write on!
