Dr. Lee Deforest

Father of Radio, Grandfather of Television

“How does this blamed thingy work?”

Okay kids, stop laughing! If you're not familiar with the history surrounding Dr. Deforest, then rest assured that the monikers below his mugshot were not coined by me. Lee used these very terms to describe himself in his later years as he struggled to remain in the limelight and create some sort of lasting legacy. It was only by the slimmest of margins that the above photograph, or one similar to it, does not bear a serial number on the bottom denoting the booking of someone freshly arrested. To be honest, I had a difficult time remaining objective while researching this month's Dude, as Major Armstrong is one of my personal heroes. So let's quit fooling ourselves and drop any pretense of being impartial and fair!

Lee's colorful life makes for interesting reading. From an early age, Deforest was determined to be successful at any cost, and his dream was to amass a large fortune. In the course of his life he made several fortunes. Lee lost several as well; all due to poor business sense, unwise choices for partners, and impressive legal fees accrued from defending himself from patent infringement and suing others. When Lee died in 1961, he only had $1,250 in his bank account. Here's a few of the high and low points of Lee's life:

The Spade Detector:

In 1903, Deforest learned of Reginald Fessenden's new electrolytic detector for use in radio receivers during a casual visit to the fellow inventor's laboratory. Lee copied Fessenden's circuit, modified it slightly, and renamed it the Spade Detector. Fessenden discovered this infringement, sued Deforest, and won. Fessenden was awarded damages.

Invention of the Vacuum Tube Triode:

Deforest modified the diode detector tube in 1906 by adding a third element, which was termed the grid. Amplification of signals many times was now possible. However, the triode tube, or “Audion” as he called it, did not work very well. Additionally, no one understood how it worked, especially Lee. It took the genius of Armstrong to unlock the power of this new device via the principal of the feedback circuit. Lee resented the younger inventor, and proceeded to sue Armstrong over this perceived challenge. What followed was perhaps the longest patent battle in history, from 1914 to 1934, with Deforest eventually winning the rights to regeneration. While on the stand, Deforest could not describe how the circuit worked in coherent terms. Despite the legal outcome, the scientific community did not recognize the ruling of the Supreme Court, as they believed Deforest had stolen the invention from its rightful owner. After all was said and done, the invention of the vacuum tube triode is considered to be one of the fundamental inventions making modern radio communications possible.

Accused in 1912:

Deforest and his partners Smith, Burlingame, and lawyer Samuel Darby, were accused of four counts of mail fraud and other wrongdoings by stockholders in their management of the Radio Telegraph and Telephone Company. Perspective stockholders were induced to buy into the new company via demonstrations of radio communications with Paris, France. It was later learned that the demonstrations were conducted from a hidden transmitter only blocks away. Smith and Burlingame were found guilty. Upon hearing of his acquittal on January 1, 1914, right after New Year's, Deforest collapsed in his lawyer's arms. During his life, Deforest started well over 30 companies, and helped drive each into bankruptcy.

Phonofilm:

Deforest dabbled in movie technology and came up with a method of recording sound on motion picture film in 1920. The audio information was recorded on a vertical strip on the edge. Sound was reproduced by directing a light beam through the strip, where it was detected by a photocell. The variations in the light's intensity were converted to sound energy, and amplified via the usual methods. This technology is still in use today in various forms. Lee received an honorary Oscar for his invention in 1959.

Four Marriages:

Good ole' Lee really had a way with the ladies! His first wife was Lucille Sheardown, whom he married in 1906, and newspapers reported that the inventor had won her hand by tapping out love messages to her in Morse Code. The marriage was never consummated, and the couple divorced the same year. In 1907, he married Nora Blatch, who was probably every bit as smart as Lee. Deforest refused to accept her as a partner in his research and business dealings, and she subsequently divorced him after bearing a child. In 1912, Lee wed pretty opera singer Mary Mayo, and stayed with her for 15 years, despite her being an alcoholic. They had two children together, but one died at birth. Finally, Deforest married 21 year old actress Marie Masquini in 1930. Marie stayed with the crotchety old inventor until his death. She apparently was the love of his life and a good woman, tending to Lee tenderly in his final days.

Deforest thought of himself as the Father of Radio, and wrote an autobiography under the same moniker in 1949. As an experiment, he had a letter mailed to Hollywood, California, where he resided, with only the words “Father of Radio” on the envelope. The letter was returned to the sender with “addressee unknown” stamped on it. During an episode of “This is Your Life”, Lee was also hailed as the “Grandfather of Television”. Lee also tried unsucessfully to convince Marie to write a book about him: the prospective title would have been “I Married a Genius”. Talk about gall!

Deforest's life story is replete with tales of controversy, envy, avarice, brilliance, culture, and romance. The reader is encouraged to research further. I apologize if this particular essay ran a little on the long side.

It sounds like DeForest was a modern day politician!
I wonder why he never ran for office.
Good work, as usual Philip. I will beat K2WH and
K3ESE to the punch: HE WAS A DUDE! Eat your hearts
out, guys! :-D
I was going to write a limerick about the man, but I
just could not see DeForest for DeTrees! :-P

Thanks for the article Philip.

That was real edumacation ( sic farty, sic ) because I hadn't heard of Mr DeForest. A colourful life indeed.

HAW! HAW! Mr. Hawes! Well put! I wonder just how
many unconsummated ham licenses there are just laying
about?! I would think that they would lose interest
also in a an unconsummated affair and get a divorce
from ham radio. Time *WILL* tell!
Just another case of not seeing DeForest for DeTrees!

I've decided who the honoree for DED No. 10 will be: its Reginald Fessenden. I was reading up on him last night and he was a very interesting character, just without all the baggage that a certain inventor came with....hmmmm, who could that be?????

Philip, one thing that you neglected to mention in your outstanding, as usual, article was that DeForest
was the the very first to utter those famous words,
"Triode, you'll like it!!"

I just wonder if he ever ate any ad hominem grids for
breakfast?

There will be *NO LIMERICKS* on this post. I have no
PENT ODES with which to socket to you. Not even in
Octal format. I know that your plate is full, so I'll
just CAP it off now. I certainly don't want to push
the envelope! You might want to beam power at me and
suppress my emissions. There are those who would
secondary that motion. I am off to commune with my
Mu's.
73, and as usual, ignore that pesky little "From"
label at the top. It isn't really there!

OH RATS! I've got GRID LEAK all over the bottom of
this post! That certainly isn't very Class C!

Hello everyone .. I enjoyed reading the article about Lee DeForest, its nice to read something on the lighter side of a famous inventor, things that one never sees in a text book. Perhaps the authors who write test books should include facts about the inventors life.

One gentleman who one hardly reads about is Dr. Tesla, because of his delaings with BIG business he was banned from text books. Very few people today know about what Dr. Tesla contributed to our society.

I teach Industrial Maintenance at a local college. At the point where alternating current motors are introduced I always introduce Dr. Tesla and his contribution to society.

Finally I find it intresting where the early large companies who build communication radios such as National, Hammarlund and Grebe were located. Like Silicon valley the New England area including New York city was home of the large companies. How they contributed to the world war 2 effort and now their products have become collectors items. Being a collector of boatanchors I an amazed how well some of those OLD receivers work compared to todays solid state receivers. Its a great feeling to see the glow of the filaments of a receiver or transmitter. 54 years in ham radio and loving every day of it.

In the Empire of the Air, Lee was discribed as a "Churl" which fits him quite well.

There is one thing you leftout, however. The patent was reversed some years after 1936 with Armstrong's wife the winner. And wasn't he ugly?

I don't believe you're correct about Armstrong's regeneration patent. Marion went after all the companies that had infringed upon Armstrong's FM patents after his patents, and won every single time, sometimes merely taking a settlement (Read DED # 3), with Motorola being the last holdout. Deforest won the last ruling on regeneration at the Supreme Court level, so that was the end of that battle, for all intents and purposes.

I highly recommend the PBS special "Empire of the Air," referenced by both Phil and Alan, K0BG. It shows the "This is Your Life" TV special that honored Lee and his wife. It also gives the ugly side of the legal battles involving DeForest, Sarnoff of RCA, and Armstrong during the development of AM radio, FM radio, and television. Fascinating stuff. I show this video when I teach electronic communications. The students are fascinated by the human side of technological developments, as are we hams when Phil provides us with these nice articles! Thanks again, Phil.

I really enjoy these.

Didn't DeForest invent the messed-up shortened, helically loaded flexible VHF antenna, the Fupped Duck?

I recall him inventing an optical accessory later renamed and converted for communications use: The Fanned Eyepole.

There were many others who did succeed. one was Professor Hazeltine, founded Hazeltine Corporation (now part of BAE Systems), father of the IFF used in military applications to this day, and the early AM radio receivers, or Barney Laughlan who really invented color TV and the NTSC system. he had a workiing system in the 1930's (and was a ham), who also worked for Professor Hazeltine, or Dr. Harold Wheeler, Wheeler Laboratories, father of UHF antennas, inventor of the AGC and a million other things we take for granted today (also a ham). Neat thing was I met them all at one time of another at our radio club meetings. Dr. Wheeler thought my HT on 2 meters was about the neatest invention going. That man was sharp as a tack till the last day he lived. The Wheeler antenna charts are still in use.

DeForest was at best, a lucky tinkerer. When asked, he couldn't even explain how his triode tube worked, and I'd bet that the same would have been true for his other so-called inventions.

I really dislike him because of what he did to Armstrong. True, Armstrong probably was not the easiest person to get along with, but at least he understood electronics and made great contributions that he could explain. I'm glad that the IRE (now IEEE) recognized his as a great inventor instead of DeForest, who is widely considered to be a glory-hungry bozo.

Really enjoyed seeing this blog on dead radio guys...

My favorites are;

Tesla, Marconi, Fessenden, and Armstrong...

Agree strongly with this deForest blog... He was a bit full of himself... He really screwed over Armstrong, the true genius not to mention his grand larceny against Fessenden...

Deforest is certainly not unique among the scientific community for being a scoundrel. Cosider Edison who took credit for numerous other's ideas, RCA's Sarnoff, and even Einstein who deserted his wife and children. In the research arena, it is not uncommon at all for the discoverer of some phenomenon not to be able to fully explain it. Most complicated questions are resolved by the investigation of many folks who bring alternative perspectives to the question at hand.

I believe "Empire of the Air" may be now available on DVD. My 11 year old daughter loves this video. Check Amazon.com

This is a video every ham needs to watch each year on Major Armstrong's birthday. With a cake and candles, little radio tower on it, you get the picture...

The morse portions showing spark gap transmitters continually send out CQ de AWA (antique wireless association) or QST de W1AW. Its cool seeing it on a rotary spark gap. I believe the AWA provided the demo transmitters from their museum.

There is one thing, however, I'd pay good money to get my hands on...the book/movie cover showing a picture of Winged Mercury and the lightning in the sky from an old radio magazine - the guy at the AWA said a poster was NOT available last time I checked. Its just a way too cool image.

K6BBC, Tony, you just happened to step in to a tempest in a teapot. The byplay between KW, ESE, KOE,
HUE and myself is good natured ribbing. But then the
plot thickens, there are folks who are trolls who like
to come in and stomp out the campfires and the group
singing of "Kum-ba-ya". Some of the trolls are pitiful examples of cowardice and sign anonymously.
They sign anonymously specifically because they are
merely gutless jerks. Not all anonymous signers are
trolls. There are several who have made worthwhile
contributions to this and other forums. There are
also some very disturbed people out there who are not
anonymous but are proud of being bigots and agitators.
KE2IV is that sort of a sick, disturbed and delusional
individual who just shows up now and then to spew out
hate and disparaging remarks.
KE2IV, why don't you go back to your funny farm, take
your meds, chill out and get your story straight about
who got the threatening QSL card from you. Maybe your
fevered mind will remember that the recipient was not in four-land. If you are going to be a fountain of
vitriol, at least get your facts straight. Even Hitler's Minister of Propaganda would at least use
half truths while rabble rousing. Now go away Mr.
KE2IV. You bore us. Yawn! Do try not to get hurt
while you are playing in the traffic with your personal residue retention. Have a nice day.

By George! I rest my case! Thank you Mike!
I guess Geo is off having another fever induced fit.
I guess the only reason that he posts here is that he discovered that his rubber walled room was also RF
tight! ;-P
At least in the part of NY State he is from, there is
more than enough pasture land for his bovine squeeze.
Just remember George, every time you squeeze out some
of your residue and every time you exhale, you are
making some wild flowers very happy! I think that is
just so nice of you!
73 Cal "one of the 25 Watt wonders in Four Land".
By the way, Mr. IV, Bill Fisher, W4AN, may be SK,
but the light from his 25 Watt bulb will still be shining brightly for a long time after the rest of us,
and you, are long forgotten. May you always remember
that fact, sir.

That was the most literate, inspired, prose-like put-down I have heard from you yet.

Its strange, though, to read something from you that doesn't rhyme or contain bad, horrible puns.

Cheers dude.

ahhhhhhh,AND WHEW! K2WH, TNX fer your....They were not dudes!!!!

Better late than never, DUDE!
I liked your artical on the proper height for antenna's.

Your non sequeter....They were not dudes, are MONTEY PYTHON like! A running joke is always good,DUDE!

for the number 9(Beatles reference), There must have been a cosmic reason for your tardyness!

You did have use hanging! That is also good for non sequeter humor....unperdictability!!!!!!

Speaking of funny...can you imagine some DUDE, sending me a threatening QSL card!

IV, I am not going to follow through with legal action. I am doing this as good faith.
With BILLS W4AN passing, I am dropping the matter.

What did you mean in the QSL card...NO FORGIVENESS?

Do you really think a P.O. box cannot be traced by a P.I. for a $250 fee. I do have that kind of money to throw around for people that make threats via the U.S. mail. That is a C feloney dude!

I can forgive you. The card is still at my uncles pct.

Next time use chlorox bleach. Bleach kills all organic matter. Thus no finger prints. The LUMINOL showed up many prints under U.V.light!

Like I will drop the matter. This is to honer BILL FISHER. A ham and human being, you coulkd never hope to be!!!!!

OK IV..the slate is clean!

You JUMP on peoples so called racial slurs, yet you insult PHILIP, an electrical engineer. MR fisher was from 4 land too! What did you say about all four landers! They were 20W bulbs.

Sending me a threat on your QSL card post marked in your town is the brightness of a neon bulb!!!!!

My FCC address on file will not find me!!!

You claim to live in Manhattan. I will be at Sothbies
auction gallary this Sunday. Lets do lunch! I will pick up the tab. I will be wearing a blue shirt that is a federal MOS shirt. Given to me as a gift from a federal agent for some consulting.

In the future, if you threaten someone....better find out WHO THEIR FRIENDS AND RESOURCES ARE!

ok SOTHBIES FOR LUNCH....THIS SUNDAY.
If you do not show up, no hard feelings. I just want to do the christian thing to do, and forgive those that tresspass. NO PRO RHE DOMINOUS.

You also called all EHAMMERS, a bunch of Yahoo's. Did you mean YOO-HOO, the drink?

Also, I am Italian. Do you hate italians too?
You have not lived until you have had fettuchinni Alfredo in Rome! YUM they cook it right sat the table.
Yes, they use two whole sticks of butter!

I am dropping the matter for two reasons. Easter, and the untimly death of Bill Fisher.
I can give you your threat QSL card back to you. No forensics!

My Uncle is very protective of me. I will have tell him, you did it as a prank. It is in a NYPD evidence bag. Good thing you did not send a second threat, then the follow up prosecution would be out of my hands.

Have you ever said one constructive thing on anybody's post? My forensic psycologist friend had a theory about your Trolling. You have been hurt in the past real bad. You have the choice not to be a misenthropic social pathenogen.

In Honer of BILL, please try to be more tolerent!
73 MIKE

So George, no hard feelings.

PAN,
How about Bill Lear of 8 track fame and jet fame?
Also Mad Man Muntz of TV fame. Muntz could cut more
corners than a New York City Bicycle Messenger!
Art Collins and Curtis LeMay are also personal heroes
to me. Curtis LeMay basically brought SSB into the
forefront of voice communications. Other than that,
the most civilized invention to date has to be the pop-top beer can. A marvelous invention for us weaklings who pass out before finishing a keg!

With the new age thinking in our society such as politicans offering unachievable promises to get support, the 'me' generation alive & doing well or the outragous number of lawsuits as the 'modern road to riches', I believe Lee Deforest should also have written a book.

Perhaps that book would have labeled him to something akin of a folk hero well ahead of his time.

If I could get two coherent thoughts in a row, I would
write an article. But I would also probably find gainful employment and that would detract from having
two coherent thoughts in a row which would get me fired from my job and I would start writing endless sentences that made absolutely no sense at all and that
would lead to other crimes like ending long rambling and unpunctuated sentences with prepositions and nobody seems to like preppies anymore if you get my drift Philip but thank you anyway but that is something up with which I could not put!
But then on the other hand, I have thought about
writing an article. Usually, about the time I have selected a subject, done some research, made my outline and written up a good abstract, some other
sleep-robbing, thought snatching, inconsiderate
but highly literate so and so goes and writes my
article. Of course the only logical step left for me
is to write an article before I even think about a
subject. Dang, Philip! You sure know how to make
life rough an a semi-literate 25 watt bulb from Four
Land. Of course all of that is society's fault since
being a mere 25 watt bulb carries no personal responsibity. Everyone knows that it takes a village
to have an idiot!
Oh well, you passed the ball to me. I just had to
drivel it down court.

It looks like you have gone from being a personal
residue retentive to, by your own posting, a BANAL
RETENTIVE. Now go away and be a nice little jerk.
You are the ultimate bore. In fact, one of my little
fourland friends, not much brighter than a night-light, wants to know when you are going home to the
Middle East and become a full time terrorist? I have
to agree that you seem to be the type who would enjoy
blowing up a bus filled with women and children.
Now go exhale again and make some little wild flower happy that you exist.
You're not worth a 73, either, so get 86'd!

Nora was one smart cookie. An engineer in her own right, she refused to live in the house Lee built for her, Riverlure (where dreams come true) recognizing it for what it was; a hatchery for the lil hatchlings, and to get her out of the way of the old man.

What is all of this about QSL cards w/ threats? Where I come from (zero-land), we take pride in sending friendly QSL cards to whomever requests them...even to newbies who have experienced their first 2 meter tropo contact over a hundred miles away on a FM repeater pair. (Except right now I am out of cards...waiting on the printer...should be in next week!) Several of my buddies and I will even send one to a listener who just wants a confirmation of reception!

Hi, Joe,
Greetings from beautiful Downtown Bethlehem, Ga.
I guess you would have to ask George, KE2IV, about
sending poison pen QSL cards. Since I am one of what
George refers to as a "25 Watt Bulb from Four Land",
I still tend to be a bit old fashioned and only send
friendly QSL's also. I guess that is why George will never get a QSL from me. I just wonder what Geoge would put on one of QSL's to some unsuspecting SWL?
You might ask Mike, WA2JJH, what a QSL from George
would say. But I think that would fall into the realm of T.M.I. (Too Much Information)

Maybe we could get some DUCT TAPE and fix a Tropo
Duct from Ga. to Mo. I'd be happy to workmyou on
2 meters. I haven't seen any really great ducting in
this area in quite a few years.

73 and have a great day! Cal K4JSR
