NTIA -- 'Interference Underestimated':

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration, an arm of the U.S. Commerce Department, released a long-awaited technical report on BPL today strongly suggesting that the FCC and current federal communications regulations underestimate the radio interference from BPL systems that push broadband data services over electrical power lines. This report reinforces the concerns expressed by a number of independent associations from ARRL to FEMA, warning the FCC that BPL will produce harmful interference to licensed communications services. Unfortunately, the NTIA report fell short of recommending changes in FCC regulations to specifically deal with BPL. However, the NTIA study does recommend tecnniques for minimizing interference.

Please reference the report in its entirety at:

Bottom line: if there is a great deal of money to be made by individuals from BPL, how much clout do the "licensed" radio services have when we essentially borrow the spectrum? I really pray that someone opens their eyes to see the potential mess this will create, but if it goes through, I sincerely hope there is a noise reduction scheme that will be employable by the masses. If not...I guess we're all satellite bound.

The satellite bound route is only good as long as Sol and the various comet debris clouds cooperate. Satellites are quite fragile with respect to space junk and large solar flares.

Thank goodness we have some time before a major flare is probable and that a flare has to be aimed just so to wreak major havoc with the satellites. Comet debris is the source of most meteor showers, so if the next Perseids or Leonids shower is a spectacular one we could lose a few satellites. A really big shower and we could have a satellite communications emergency. A grain of sand at 5 miles per second or better can cause quite a bit of damage.
