Dead Electrical Dudes No. 13

This Month's Stiff: Michael Faraday

Entered Mortal Coil: 22 September 1791

Assumed Room Temperature: 25 August 1867

“I've got two. How many do you have, laddie?”

Michael Faraday should be rightly remembered as one of the greatest experimental scientists of the 19th Century. As mentioned in a previous essay, in my opinion, one is truly great when a unit of measure, for instance, is given your name at some point after you slip the bonds of this mortal existence. Dearly departed Mike had not one, but two scientific units named in his honor! The Brits are rightly proud of this man.

Unlike his contemporaries, Mike had extreme trouble with mathematics. In fact, it is said he knew very little. His mind was geared towards the “hands on” approach. A sheet of formulas and arcane calculations did not presage any of his discoveries. No, Mike just went out and found out first hand whether his ideas had any merit. However, given the broad scope of his contributions, he is often listed amongst the other greats who understood the “new math”, and showed their work on paper before the final answer. Unfortunately, I am afraid a modern professor would have given Faraday an “F” in lab for that very reason! So, what did the gentle scientist discover? Here is the grocery list of the high points:

  1. Transformers: Discovered mutual-inductance, which is the basis for modern transformers.

  2. Self-Inductance: Discovered this characteristic of coils at approximately the same time as Joseph Henry. However, the unit of self-inductance is named for his American contemporary (see DED No. 11).

  3. The Dielectric Constant: Faraday described the fundamental characteristic of capacitors, and he also invented a variable capacitor. The unit of capacitance, the Farad, designated by the letter F, is named for Mike as a result of this discovery.

  4. Electric motor and dynamo: Every piece of modern electrical machinery owes its existence to these two inventions of Faraday.

  5. Faraday Rotation: Polarized light will change its rotation when influenced by an electromagnet. This phenomenon is also known as the Faraday Effect.

  6. Faraday's Constant: Mike discovered that a specific amount of electric charge is required to deposit one mole of a substance on an electrode via electrolysis. This unit of charge is referred to as a Faraday, and is denoted by the symbol Fd. A Faraday is equal to 96.4853 kilocoulombs. A coulomb is defined as the number of electrons stored when a potential difference of 1 volt is applied across a capacitor of 1 Farad. We'll talk about Mr. Coulomb later, if someone will kindly remind me to do so. Whew! Okay, that's enough difficult electronic theory for now!

  7. Terminology: Mike made up some cute electrical terms for us. These include anode, cathode, electrode, and ion.

  8. Other stuff: Faraday discovered Benzene.

Ever mindful of his obligations to his fellow man, Faraday always gave a lecture on Christmas day for children. These lectures are classics of the scientific method, and described various concepts in a way that the common person could understand. The tradition of these lectures continues to this very day.

Faraday's work in electricity and magnetism helped pave the way for his fellow countryman, James Clerk Maxwell: the reader is referred to DED No. 1 for that story. Mike was truly a hard act to follow.

Cheers.

This DUDE did quite a bit! I am impressed!
He certainly was no Faraday weather friend!
For those of you who get angry at my puns, fret not!
Because my puns are so bad that I dielectrically

Just one question Philip, "Why do you Dude us like you
dude dude dude"?
Wait! I know! It is because before you dude us this way we did not know dudely-squat!
After reading this last article the theme song from the TV show "Ponderosa" keeps running through my mind
driving me terminally sane! Dude didda dude dude dude
duuuude, dude didda dude didda dude didda dude.....
Aaaaaaargh! you are driving me stark raving normal!
Next thing ya know, the guys from Eham.net will be coming after me in their yellow and green helicopters!
I would have written a limerick, but I could only come
up with capacitive plate etudes.
I think with that last pun I went thru a Faraday shield and strained myself!

And the rest of us are eternally grateful about your
affiliation with Right Guard! This way we do not get
into any "NOSE CODE" debates!
At least this is not Kalifornia where Arnold has so
eloquently stated, "We don't need no stinking girlie-

Getting to comment on KOE's DUDE threads is really the
OLD SPICE OF LIFE. However, some comments are JUST THE PITS!
This all goes to show that not being forwarned is to be UNDER ARMED.

Y'all go and have a nice day now, or I'll post again!

With a resume like that, this guy isn't a Dead Electrical Dude, he's a Dead Electrical STUD!
I never realized that the guy did as much as he did. Also an inspiration to poor math students everywhere. Actually, a guy like this is a good example for the arguement of multiple intelligences. Wow.
Anyway, Phillip, as usual, again, bravo. Keep the dudes coming if and when you can. Your following may not be wide spread, but you sure are gaining cult status. 73 to you!

Excellent and a COULOMB artical!!!

Faraday also had this quote. When the inductor coil was first around, engineers of that day askes..............What is the use of a coil.

Faraday said...Well then what is the use of having a baby! You do not know what the baby will do in 70 years.

Imagine, electronics with no coils are inductors!!!!!! Needless to say no radio!!!

Bravo, Philip. This one's up to your usual standards, dude. Here's something I'll bet you didn't know. Mike Faraday’s mom, Queenie, was a bit of a celebrity in her own right. A TV show in the 1950's was named after her! No kidding! Women would tell their life stories in hopes of winning big prizes. Surely, those of you over 40 (and that’s most of us) remember the show? The host, one Jack Bailey, would open the show by asking “How would YOU like to be Queen Faraday?”

Mike K3CXG (-:

“And don’t call me Shirley!”

Two Dead Dude articles on board at once. Philip, you
are doing "DOUBLE DUDEY!"

Mike sez, "Imagine, electronics with no coils or inductors!!!!!! Needless to say no radio!!!"
His comment was "RIGHT ON 'Q'."

And K0EWS sez, "I never realized that the guy did as much as he did." It just goes to show that Faraday's
plates were not too full!
EWS also said, "Your following may not be wide spread, but you sure are gaining cult status. 73 to you!" Sir, you have never met me, but Philip can
confirm that I follow his writing and I am, indeed,
widespread! Ask anyone behind me at a hamfest!
I also shun Right Guard at hamfests so I can have plenty of room to move around freely. I just do not
see what all of these other people are complaining
about!!! ;-D

Phil you did it again, when you finish the series you need to publish them. I think they should be in every beginning electronics text book. Learning should be fun right? Your Dude series is fun but also very informative. Now Faraday might be very close to Stud status I still think Tesla was the Main Stud. Phil keep up the most excellent work and you too may reach Dudedom very very soon.

Now I’m going to be humming the Bonanza tune all freaking day and smiling, Thanks Cal.

Things Faraday Discovered

Transformers:

(Yeah, I played with these superhero figures as a kid too.)

Self-Inductance:

(Quite often I would engage in such activities all by myself all the time.)

The Dielectric Constant:

(Now here's an oxymoron if I ever heard of one. Is it electricity that is constantly turned on? or is it something electronic that dies constantly? My 1973 Chev must qualify as Dielectric then. )

Electric motor and dynamo:

(Ok.. Now I'm confused)

Faraday Rotation:

(I recently asked for one of these at Pep Boys)

Faraday's Constant:

(His ability to keep his hair in place and properly "coulombed")

Terminology:

(That's right folks - Faraday discovered this after he discovered that he had poor math skills)

Faraday discovered Benzene:

(It was later discovered that Farday was busted for running a meth lab in Atlanta and was prominently featured on a recent episode of "Cops")

- Background forum music theme suddenly changes from "Bonanza" to "Cops"

...Whatcha gonna do when they come for you!

Tnx Peter.

But I am afraid there must be some confusion. I haven't resubmitted any of the articles...they are all new when first seen on the front page. You may see an earlier version on the site que by punching in article numbers and find pages that weren't quite perfect when they were uploaded. Eham is like that. Once you upload they are there permanently unless Clinton deletes old ones to clean out files. I know that when I was a relatively newby to the quirks of uploading articles, there may have been five versions of a particular piece floating around, all in various states of disrepair, but the latest ones are the ones Clinton posted. Photos are particularly tricky when inserted into a Word document. Different versions of Word produce differing results. I am using the 2000 version and it gives the best results from this end.

Due to my writing style, I inevitably make a few mistakes and may re-upload an article after tweaking it a couple of days later. There is currently about a 2-3 week lag between when you submit an article and Clinton puts it up front, if of course, he likes it.

Anyway, just thought I'd add my 2.3439 cents worth to your question.

Hey K2WH......THERE WERE DUDES!!!!! Get over it!!!
I have imutable proof too!

How you say, with great bewilderness and dismay.

OK letza me splanza- it to you!

OK remember Montey Pathons flying circus.

Remember the one sketch where a woman was accused of being a witch.

A respected townsman said.....she turned me into a newt!

The woman was sentenced to death as a witch.

Same theory applies here!!!!
The title is dead electrical DUDES! pHILIP SAID THEY WERE DUDES!

ok THERE YOU HAVE IT! Between Philip saying so and Montey Python you have 3 sources of proof. The third source is because I said so.

Three sources of proof is good enough for most news programs. So we have yet a fourth source!

The alphabet agency guy in the black heliocopter said so too!

So there, you have no reason to say they were not dudes for the next set of dead DUDES!
