Dear Dr. Hamm II

Dear Dr. Hamm #2 (He's Back!!) . . .

As related through Gordon Hubbell, N1OU

(Copyright 2004, F. Gordon Hubbell)

Dr. Percival Maximus Hamm, LID (Doctor of Limited Information) is the only known psychiatrist devoting his practice entirely to the relationship aspects of amateur radio. He rarely communicates with the public, and then only through his long-time friend Gordon Hubbell, N1OU. You may read Dr. Hamm's previously published wisdom in a 2002 post on this site entitled “Dear Dr. Hamm”.

The reclusive Dr. Hamm resides on the little-known island of Muchas Guano and writes only on those rare occasions when he is not fully engaged in his continuing study of the multiple efficient methodologies for removal of epidermal tissue from the domestic feline. Newly selected letters and Dr. Hamm's insightful replies follow . . .

Dear Dr. Hamm,

For many years I scrimped and saved to buy a new top-of-the-line radio. I finally got about four grand accumulated and then Icom raised the bar with the IC-7800—TEN THOUSAND BUCKS! So, I robbed a bank last week and got the rest of the money. Then, my wife found it and went out and spent it on a boob job. What do you think?

Future Felon in Phoenix

Dear Fel,

I, too, am fascinated by the features of the IC-7800. It is certainly well endowed. The graceful curves of the knobs show sultry artistry. There's a curvy suppleness to the overall design and a really erotic flow in the mesmerizing display. Please send me full and detailed color photographs of the results of your wife's surgery (I already have pictures of the radio). Only then will I be able to determine if your money was well spent. Please hurry since I'm sure the law will be closing in on you quickly.

Dear Dr. Hamm,

Do you have Broadband Over Power Lines in Muchas Guano? If so, please let me know if it is causing interference.

Big Guy at ARRL

Dear Big Guy,

There is a band of broads on the island if that is what you are referring to. Since we have a clothing-optional society here, some of those broads cause a lot of interference. What power lines may have to do with it I'm not certain. Please send me a donation and I'll be happy to conduct some intense research.

Dear Dr. Hamm,

My ham boyfriend got shipped off to Iraq with his guard unit and all he left me was a lock of his hair, his picture, an Elecraft kit to put together, and his credit card. Should I use the credit card to send him stuff?

Lonely in La Jolla

Dear Lonely,

Absolutely not! First, please send me a picture of yourself. If you qualify for one of my therapy groups I'll respond immediately. Then, you should use the card to get yourself (and the card, too) to Muchas Guano. Don't bother with a return ticket—this might take some time.

Dear Dr. Hamm,

My husband got a vertical but it isn't straight. Its sort of “half mast” at best and it has a kink in it. It won't stay up and he's always playing with it. Our neighbor, who wants to work a lot of DX, has a big yagi but he can't get it up. Something about CC&R's. Is CC&R's a disease? I'm beginning to think I may be part of the problem because my husband says I talk too much about his unreliable vertical and the neighbor's big yagi. Could this be true?

Wondering in Walla Walla

Dear WinWW,

Yes, CC&R's kill some verticals and almost all yagis, small and large. Also, my studies have shown a direct correlation between the angle of a vertical and the stimulation provided by the exciter unit. I cannot provide you with a thorough answer, however, until I have had a chance to examine the situation more thoroughly. Please send me a picture of yourself (minimal clothing, please) and I'll assess your critical factors. If this shows potential, I'll send you a ticket to Muchas Guano and we'll get down to detailed analysis.

Dear Dr. Hamm,

My wife recently retired and is now home with me all the time. She was a bearded lady in a sideshow and traveled most of the year. Now, all she does is complain about the “noise” from my radio. I love her and I'm not sure how to handle the situation.

Puzzled in Pulaski

Dear Puz,

That's really too bad.

Dear Dr. Hamm,

Over a year ago, you recommended your “therapy” for my young wife. I've never been happier! Now, I don't catch any flack if I want to ragchew all night. I can spend money for radios and stuff without the usual complaints of, “I need clothes”. My life has improved by a thousand percent. Thank you for your fine work!

Old Geezer in Ohio

Dear Geezer,

Alas, young wives are a recurring problem and yours is certainly of the “trophy” variety. You didn't ask, but I should let you know she's doing quite well, never complains about needing clothes, and says she hardly remembers you. You do, however, owe me a bit of a bill. Please remit funds immediately for her food and shelter expenses. This will assure continuation of your state of married bliss.

Dear Dr. Hamm,

My husband won the lottery a few weeks ago and now he's spending all our money on ham radio equipment. We have rooms full of radios, parts, antennas, and stuff. He's always up on the roof tinkering with wires. He never sleeps with me because he's up all night “working DX” whatever that means. How can I get his attention? I'd at least like some new clothes.

Ignored in Indianapolis

Dear Ig in Indy,

Forget the clothes unless you are over forty and unattractive. Assuming you are young and attractive, go to the main breaker panel and flip the big switch to “off”. Grab the checkbook, head for the bank, and wire all remaining funds to my attention. After that, make a beeline to the airport and call me when you land in Muchas Guano. You need intensive therapy and I'm reserving a high-priority time slot for you. In the event you are over forty and unattractive please disregard this and buy yourself one of Gordon West's license manuals.

Are you a ham with a relationship problem? Married to, engaged, or involved with an amateur radio operator? Dr. Hamm is standing by to help! Donations (and pictures when requested) can be funneled through N1OU. Future columns will deal with TVI (Tilted Vertical Incidents), QRM (Quickly Routing Money to me) and how to get the most revealing pictures of your wife or girlfriend.

What is happening to eHam? Is this now a forum for sleazy/crass innuendos? I enjoy a joke or two, the same as the next person but I do not condone gender bashing. EHam...what has happened to you?

gender bashing?
by KZ1X on October 13, 2004 Mail this to a friend!
I read no gender bashing, only a bit of teasing about the Icom 7800.

What I object to, in the MOST STRENUOUS terms, is the lack of Dr. Hamm's instructions as to what the girlfriend should do with the unbuilt Elecraft!

This is UNacceptable. In certain religions, like the one I make up for myself every few weeks, having an unbuilt radio kit in the home is a sin.

She should build the unit IMMEDIATELY and if she has problems winding the toroids, they can be purchased pre-wound, inexpensively.

And, she DOES have a credit card ... Details on the Elecraft website, which also shows the $600 Elecraft K2 has a receiver as good or better than the $11,000 Icom 7800.

Dear Dr. Hamm: Ever since I got divorced a couple of years ago, I have been extremely happy, but I am beginning to think maybe there's something wrong with me. Let me tell you how I spend a typical day. In the early morning, if it's deer season, I go hunting on my property. I do the same thing at dusk. In the morning I work on my car restoration projects and in the afternoon I go for a long bicycle ride or work on more muscle definition at the gym. I talk on the ham radio very little anymore because it seems to consist of nothing except a bunch of hams bragging about their material possessions, and there has to be more to life than that, doesn't there? And every time I meet an attractive woman, within about 5 minutes I'm asking myself, "Do I really want HER telling me what I can do, and what I can't do?" The answer is always NO. As I said, I'm really enjoying my life, but I worry: Is there something wrong with me, Doctor? Thank you in advance for your reply

What a waste of literary space on an otherwise good site. I remember when you had to submit "white paper" articles for this area and only a few good ones worth reading were chosen. It seems now that there are no literary standards at all guiding this area of the site. I hope that this is not an illustration of why I should spend money to subscribe. I can find this type of crap on any porn site.

I don't mind the occasional humor on this forum, but this posting is crude and in bad taste. If you wouldn't say it over the air, you shouldn't be posting it here. And it wasn't funny, either.

If this article is the best you have we are in trouble. Humor is fine and at it's best when served without inuendo. There are children who read this site looking for information on radio. This article only serves to advance their education in other matters. Leave this stuff in the bar or locker room where it belongs please.

Yeh - I don't see anything seriously wrong with this item. It's a bit edgy, but I found it funny, and I seriously doubt any young people will be corrupted by it. There is much more horrific stuff on TV any night of the week (not counting the news, which is possibly worse).

Thanks for the amusing item, Gordon. Dr. Hamm does appear to have a one track mind, but sounds human.

From looking at some of these replies (charges of "sexism", etc.), it looks to me that many of you "males" have become so brainwashed and feminized that you've turned into pansies. I blame Oestrogen in the water supply! That and political correctness.

As some has said it is sexist. I don't mind so much. It's actually a nice break from the "permitted" sexist stuff on TV and radio ("men never ask for directions").

However, it was too repetitive to be funny.

HAMRADIO CLUB OF THE SILENT BROTHERS
by KB7LYM on October 13, 2004 Mail this to a friend!
It happened in the Monastery of the Silent Brothers.
All the Brothers had a hobby but most were skilled Ham radio
Operators. On this particular morning Brother Frances was standing
in front of the Head Monk who said... Brother Frances,Brother Frances
you have done it again. Lost an other key. Now here is the last Key and please
be extremely careful with it.
And Brother Frances grabbed the Key like it was the last
morsel of food on earth and with put the Key under his heavy Robe and into a fold of his loincloth
He then started to climb the spiral staircase.
He stopped in front of an old Oak door and
put his ear against it.
He was sweating a great deal and soon the swat was running over his sandals.
Yes he could hear it now.. Soft moans came from the cellar behind the door. He fished the
Key from his loincloth that was no more than a wet mop by now and with shaking finger put the
Key into the rusty lock. He opened the door just about an inch and peeked through the narrow slit
What he saw was so horrible that he dropped the key that disappeared in a crack in the floor
than he tore all the hairs out of his scalp and ripped his clothes to shreds.
He ran naked and bald up to the Bell tower where he flung
himself over the railing and to his death below on the jagged rocks.
What did he see.... what the heck did see poor soul see ???
Yes Folks to see that you have to join
the Monastery of the Silent Brothers Radio Club and you must have a key

Humor of this sort obviously comes from a liberal mind.

Conservatives would never put something like this article up for public view.

This all being said, minds with a liberal slant do tend to more creative, from a humor point of view.

Is this still a Ham Radio Website? It is now off limits to my children who asked me what a "Boobjob" was as I came home from work. Their mother and I were under the false impression that a Ham Radio Website might be family friendly. What a Laugh. The most interesting aspect of this to me is that most of those who object to negative comments on this article resort to ad-hominem arguments. So I'll try a counter ad-hominem..."If you think this trash belongs on a Ham Radio website you ARE a BOOBJOB"
That may reach them on their level.

While I agree that this type of post is better left to other sites, I just don't understand the uproar over it. It's not that darn bad! I must admit, there were a couple of times that I chuckled too. Do you watch TV and/or go to the movies? Surely you regularly see much worse there.

Can't help but wonder, though. According to your QRZ listing, you're 44 years old. Just how old are your children?

Anybody couldn've put this article on here weather they were far-left liberal, conservative,or whatever! Political standing isn't relevant here and has nothing to do with who wrote this article, take that somewhere else! The debates are on tonight, by the way.

OFF-TOPIC!

Now, maybe if this article would get deleted and we could get back to more ham-radio oriented things that would be nice. BTW theres nothing wrong with jokes; thsi is, however, a HAM RADIO website.

This website is here in addition to many other things as a source of entertainment for Radio Amateurs (and others).

Eham is not actually "HAM RADIO" nor is it conducted "on the air" on any particular frequency.

There are many forums and threads a person can choose from.

This is after all the Internet and as such I would suggest if people find the light hearted humor in this particular message thread to be somehow "offensive," to simply choose another thread.

Similarly, if you find porn to be offensive, then don't choose those particular sites either.

The beauty of the Internet is that there are many choices you can make, or sites one can participate in.

No one is forcing your computer to choose this particular message thread at this time.

A little perspective won't anyone hurt either.

Deer Dr Hamm, I have a dilema and need your help. I want to buy a new IC-7800, a US tower HDX-89 and an ACOM 2000A amp. I would have to go into debt to get it but I don't mind. The problem is that my wife wants to get a new roof because ours is very old and leaking. Well, since it doesn't leak in the radio roon and we can just fill and empy buckets when it rains, I figure that we could wait a few more years for that. It would be different if she wanted to use the money for a boob job, but for a leaky roof....why?

Please help!!

"Do you watch TV and/or go to the movies? Surely you regularly see much worse there."

Are you serious? What about our kids?

I often tune the bands and hear people using words such as those that are replacements for Hades and Darn. Do you think our kids are not influenced by what they see and hear?

Get real people! Everything they see and hear shapes their little minds and influences their behavior.

Isn't it time that we started being adults and set an example?

Isn't it time that someone stands up and says "Hey, that isn't appropriate"?

Isn't it time that we take a stand and say just because it's permitted on Talk Radio, TV or in movies, we aren't going to permit it in Ham Radio?

I read over and over how Ham Radio is dying and we need to get more youth involved. Did you ever think that perhaps some people don't want their kids listening to some of the garbage they hear over the air, or the garbage they have to read on eHam?

My kids are restricted to CW only for the time being. I never see anyone curse on CW.

Just the other day I was listening to a well known ham on 20 meters whom couldn't have a conversation without cursing no less than a dozen times in less than 10 minutes! This ham is on the same frequency almost every day. Is it necessary for him to curse repeatedly?

Would he curse if he was in my home, in front of my kids? Probably not.

NEWS FLASH: When I turn on the radio, you are in my home and you are speaking in front of my kids!

Sure, I could turn the radio off or keep my kids out of the radio room, but should my kids be excluded from ham radio so some hams can curse or talk about boob jobs?

Who needs it? And who needs this garbage on eHam?

I think it's time for a change.

Perhaps eHam needs some competition to provoke them to clean up their site. A site that has content about ham radio related subjects, not a site that permits any one to post anything they want, especially the anonymous users whom can post anything they wish without impunity.

If you think eHam needs cleaned up and you are interested in a change such as helping build a better site...email me at eham@ky1v.com.

By the way, how many of you are aware that while eHam has been complaining about hosting costs in order to get your subscription dollars, I have repeatedly offered to host this website for free. I own a fairly well known hosting company that could host eHam with more bandwidth, more server power and do it at a fraction of the cost.

I have never once received a response from eHam!

How about a completely free site that has all that eHam offers and more while elliminating the garbage eHam permits on its site?

Perhaps eHam needs some competition to provoke them to clean up their site. A site that has content about ham radio related subjects, not a site that permits any one to post anything they want, especially the anonymous users whom can post anything they wish without impunity. "

Its already been done.

As far as the eHAM.Net website is concerned, it appears that ANY posting is allowed here as it is not censored. I, for one, while not agreeing with all postings or level of language (I thnk there is way too much bickering and back-biting going on here but there is also some good info), do not agree that censorship belongs here or anywhere in a free society.

What exactly makes 'your' idea of what is correct and decent any better than 'someone' elses simply because your kids should not be exposed to it. I recommend that if your children are too young to understand YOUR explanation of what and why someone desires to speak about a subject that YOU find offensive, that you monitor their access to the source (ie eHAM.Net) and wait until they are old enough for you to 'guide' them in their life's lessons. I'll bet that you will find they experience alot more intense 'exposure' at school and the playground than what was mentioned in this post. Why should the world be sanitized for your kid's sake? What makes your kid's growing up experiences any more precious than someone elses rights and freedoms?

As far as the radio is concerned, as far as I know, each radio comes with a VFO (or some sort of frequency changing function) if you don't like what is being transmitted on the current frequency. As a last resort, they also all have an ON/OFF switch. I think it is really lame for someone to sit and listen to something they do not like simply to be able to complain about it. If someone breaks in on your QSO and starts with the poor operating methods (language, etc.), I would recommend that you report them to the FCC. Likely, however, if they didn't break any FCC regs, nothing will be done about it. The FCC doesn't enforce morality only the 1934 Communincation Act regulations and amendments. If you are engaged in a QSO with someone and they start with something your disapprove of, break off the QSO and find someone else to talk to.

Bottom line, morality and children upbringing starts at home. Censorship is the one of the first steps towards a dictatorship.

The "free site".....an interesting concept, to say the least. Exactly who will determine what is allowed and what is not? Will there be a specific printed set of rules? If I object to the content of a post on the free site, will that content be pulled immediately upon my request? Will rampant egotism still be allowed? Inquiring minds want to know.

Just want to say that I really don't have any problem with the content of this article, but, I get more laughs listening to a John Kerry speech than I do reading it. It's just not funny.

But, to each his (or her) own.

yeah, i can't even vote this year (i'm under 18, one of the 'kids' browsing this site, and i have to say i hear worse than this in school every day, but i still don't think it belongs here. ham's are supposed to be decent guys, guess not all of them are) but i do find the john kerry promises rather humerous... "i will, i will i will i won't i will i will i won't i won't" has it occured to anyone that he can't even influence half of the stuff he talks about

has anyone noticed that almost every single article has some tie to politics, some b@$.... somehow makes everything seem like the president's fault, every time. it's stupid

Dear Dr Hamm II, I am for killing babies, keeping murders alive with tax payers money, raising taxes, teaching our kids that homosexuality is good and should be expierimented with. I think that we should be at war but we should not fund our troops. I desire to create a welfare and socialist state.

Who should I vote for at this upcoming presidential election?

Lloyd, you must be talking about Clinton, the chimp.
Wake up! His Sore Loserman team died nearly four years ago. And yes, all of the various recounts by
the press after the Sore Loserman debacle shows that
they did lose the election in Florida. Do try to get
over it and try to have a nice life. Dit Dit.
Also thank you for bringing politics into Eham.
I am certain everyone loves you for it. As far as your Christian bashing in another thread, if the same
lack of respect was shown for your faith you would
have the Anti-Defamation League on there backs in a
nano second.
You have confirmed to me that if liberals did not have
double standards, they would have no standards at all.

Flame away Lloyd. Show us what I just said about you is true.

Cal, I know that bashing Mr. Clinton soothed your tired old soul, but...that was years ago, you've got to pick up the pieces and move on, somehow!

As long as there are those who wish to trot out their blubbering piety and religious claptrap, inappropriately, here, in a public forum, I'll feel free to express my views.

The moment I begin to pontificate about MY deeply-held articles of faith, alleging they're The Truth, here, you and cowardly Old Fart and all your brain-dead buddies are welcome to pile on!

And...you're thanking me for bringing politics to eHam...? WTF? I mean...you've got cowardly, cringing WTF52 to thank for that. Look carefully, now, above...I bet you can find it.

dit-dit.

KY1V David;

Such an hysterical, emotional, overstated response! Since you chose to extract a quote from my post, out of context, I feel compelled to respond. You, obviously, chose not to quote my comment that, to paraphrase, "the topic is best posted on other sites". Furthermore, by the length of your post, it seems likely that you seem to like the sound of your own voice far more that the rationale of your premise. As a young person posted, this type of discussion is prevalent in schools. How do you propose to control that? It is sad that such poorly thought out, hysterical comments distract me from my basic attitude that topics such as this are overused and, generally of limited interest. David, you make some good points, but they are obscured by the emotional tone of your comments to the point that I just turn your argumets off. This whole post is a "tempest in a teapot" and has occupied far more space than it deserves. Next time you feel the need to be "angry" about something, try to make it a worthy topic!

Jump to conclusion eh. No religious views here at all. I don't support killing inocent babies. What is religous about that? I know that some of you want to have a president whose view changes with the latest polls. Hey Kerry/Hienz payed 12.5% tax bracket....nice huh since they have over a billion dollars they should pay a lower tax bracket then mine. They have also sent most of their business overseas where they can get cheap labor. They don't care about American jobs. They only want to line their pockets with more money....like over a billion isn't enough.

Did anyone watch CNN after the debate last night and see the spectator in the background with the sign that read "KERRY EATS BABIES?"

Dear Doctor Hamm

I have a problem.

The other day I surfed over to eHam to see what the latest Ham Radio news of the day was. Funny thing, there and some 14 year old boys were telling jokes that they thought were funny, but weren’t really, well at least to most people who aren’t 13 or 14 years old.

Now Doctor, I have been known to be a bit of raconteur at times, but through years of practice my double entrées are better not to mention a few F bombs thrown in here or there, but I’m concerned. With the passing of the great master of the double entrée, Bob Hope, I fear for the youth of this country of the country are adrift when it comes to the art of telling a decent joke, not to even mention the art of crafting a joke that you can tell in front of the women folks and not end at HR.

Should I agitate for a compulsory Lenny Bruce class in our high schools, or just have another stiff drink and relax?

The future of the Republic and the honor of Televangelists everywhere depend on your help.

This site should really have a 'moderator' when posts like Dr Hamm keep slipping through the cracks, that way the people who want to broadcast their own weird brand of sexist-humour can be deterred from invading ham sites that are striving to be a source of news and education. I'm sure there are newsgroups that would welcome Dr Hamm!

I'm no prude, but if I want pseudo-sarcastic-sexist humour I will switch on the comedy channel or watch a show. I dont need to see it on e-ham!

On the other hand 'Dead Electrical Dudes' WAS amusing while being well researched and educational at the same time, so no moderator would ban that!

Maybe Dr Hamm should concentrate on humour of the latter gendre' ?

I agree with W1BAK. I don't come to eHam for sleaze, I come here to get information on the radio hobby. Someone needs to have better discipline in monitoring what gets posted here! It's ironic that we allow one posting with suggestions about what to do about filthy language on the airwaves, and then allow a posting like this. I wonder what the YL's and XYL's out there think about this? Everytime I visit this site, I get asked to subscribe but, while I think there is good content on this site, I can't justify contributing when these types of posts are allowed.

I assume that you do not let your children go to the library and that you do not have a TV or an FM radio in your house.
I hope you never let your children hear words like 'cancer', aids, influenza, black plague, or cholesterol.
