Morse Code Ringtones on Cellular Phones

I always chuckle when some teeny-bopper's mobile phone sends the letters SMS in Morse when a text message arrives (though I'd bet the significance is lost on just about all of them). This got me to wondering how I can customize the ringer on my own mobile to send Morse Code ringtones for more than just SMS. I have a relatively-new LG mobile that allows customized polyphonic ringtones for either every call in general or specific to each number that caller-ID matches to a number in my phonebook.
After a little homework I found the easiest way to do this requires a data connection from my PC to the phone and three pieces of software. First was the Susteen Data Pilot software that came bundled with the phone's USB cable; this allows the phone to communicate with the PC. This is the medium through which everything is loaded, but you don't actually DO anything with it.
Next, I needed to generate sound files of the various Morse words or phrases that I wanted. I used a freeware program called WinMorse 2 to generate these WAV files, which I then converted to MP3 format (you can use any standard audio conversion program readily available on the web).
Finally, I uploaded the MP3 files to the phone using BitPim version 0.7.23 (use whichever version is the most recent), another free piece of software which happens to communicate with my phone. You need to ensure compatibility between your phone and this software, or else use software specific to your phone.
Once this was accomplished, I went into the phone's menu and associated these new Morse tones with individual numbers and a general "CQ CQ DE W2IRT" for any unknown or unmatched number. All of these were recorded at a nice 25 wpm speed at 800 Hz and are loud enough to be annoying--er--be heard in noisy environments (yeah, that's it). It's also unique enough that when it goes off a dozen people won't all be reaching for their own phones at the same time.
I don't know if there's a way to do this with Midi files or for phones that don't have so-called polyphonic ringers, but I'm sure it's possible (though maybe a little harder to do). Give it a try and see if you can spot another ham in the room!

A guy I work with has one that sends "SMS" in code whenever he gets a text message. Drove me nuts until I figured out it meant "Short Message System".

I have a neat idea for all the Nextel users...
Program it to say "I wish I had a ham radio."

I may have to check into this. Maybe my phone should say "CW forever" and "ham radio is fun" etc. ... Plus, maybe I can program my friend's callsigns into my address book so it will send their callsign in CW when they call me!

Well, that's precisely what I did. It sounds out "home" when my XYL calls, "hosarc" when the club station rings me up, SMS and Voice Mail say just that, plus three or four callsigns of ham-friends. It sure isn't the easiest thing in the world to do, but the end result I find to be very satisfying.

Thanks for that tip about WinMorse. A few years ago, I actually hooked up the sidetone of my keyer to my sound card and recorded Morse sound effects to replace annoying Windows event sounds. I assigned QRV for a program start, 73 to program close, and QNU replaced "You've got mail!" QNU is more grammatically correct than that stupid voice prompt, in additon to less annoying.
Unfortunately, the recording did not work well, so sound quality was scratchy to say the least. I just downloaded and used WinMorse to replace those files. And it sounds GRRRRRRREAT!
If you attempt it, be aware that the .wav files will be in your document file. But you can use Browse to assign the effects.
Now about cellphone ring tones: Since I don't have a cellphone, I really don't know if this is possible. How about trying to program a cellphone to ring "CQ CQ DE [TN or Name from caller ID]?"

Works great on my Treo600. I have everyone's callsign in 20wpm CW. If not licensed then I use their name. That way I can tell who's calling while the phone is still on my belt. Good opportunity to share ham radio with non-hams who recognize the ringtone as CW and ask.

Have your employer Dump Nextel for a System Mobile Radio ( SMR 2 way ) price is much lower than Nextel, and you don't get voices in occasion sound like R2D2 when the Digital signal gets goofed up.
I have a V-120 e Motorola which I plan on replacing soon but be kinda neat someone created a download site for these CW ringtones like Cell CW dot com or something.

i have a NOKIA 3310 and on this phone there is a "composer" facility. This enables you to compose certain ring tones.
When my phone rings the ring tone sends " cq cq de gm0egi k. It is quite effective, and I NEVER have to think when I hear other cell phones ringing "is that mine?"

From STYX:
Written by tommy shaw
Lead vocals by tommy shaw
Sitting on this barstool talking like a d*** fool
Got the twelve o’clock news blues
And I’ve given up hope on the afternoon soaps
And a bottle of cold brew
Is it any wonder I’m not crazy? is it any wonder I’m sane at all
Well I’m so tired of losing- I got nothing to do and all day to do it
I go out cruisin’ but I’ve no place to go and all night to get there
Is it any wonder I’m not a criminal?
Is it any wonder I’m not in jail?
Is it any wonder I’ve got
Too much time on my hands, it’s ticking away with my sanity
I’ve got too much time on my hands, it’s hard to believe such a calamity
I’ve got too much time on my hands and it’s ticking away from me
Too much time on my hands, too much time on my hands
Too much time on my hands
Well, I’m a jet fuel genius - I can solve the world’s problems
Without even trying
I have dozens of friends and the fun never ends
That is, as long as I’m buying
Is it any wonder I’m not the president
(he’s not the president)
Is it any wonder I’m null and void?
Is it any wonder I’ve got
Too much time on my hands, it’s ticking away at my sanity
I’ve got too much time on my hands, it’s hard to believe such a calamity
I’ve got too much time on my hands and it’s ticking away from me
Too much time on my hands, too much time on my hands
Too much time on my hands

W2IRT, do you have to carry your CW code reader around with you now to determine who is calling you? Or was this excercise for code practice? Maybe you should slow it down a bit.... I just downloaded a STYX song to my cellphone ringer. I think of you everytime my XYL calls.

Hey KC2CBA.....DUH! And FYI, for all of you that definately have too much time on your hands (I can't get that song out of my head now!) like the author. The SMS protocol implemented by Nokia was influenced by a company employee Martti Laine, OH2BH. No it was not a coincedence your phones know the code.

I've got an older (non-polyphonic) phone that uses tha RTTL specification language to do little songs with its beeps...I've done this for mine, but I don't have all the nifty tones for different people (wish I did).
If anybody wants information on how to do it for the older phones (i.e., Nokia 1260), you can e-mail me.

I just did it on my LG4400. It was a pain to figure out the settings and drivers but Google found all the answers. I can not associate a ring with a particular number but now when my phone rings it says "qrz qrz? de k4ia" Now, how do I get the VU4 to call me?

Hey KY1V...lol. It is a good song, but not one of the best of Styx. I remember seeing them at the Boston Garden in 1978, Rick Derringer opened.
I would still rather hear that coming out of my cellphone than " .... --- -- . ".
That writer from Time magazine was right about embarrasing hams. Thank god music will always be here for me when ham radio is long gone. CW in public places...my XYL would hide. She likes the Styx ringer I have now though.

Here is an easier way that doesn't require the cable and it's associated software. You can download a program called "Polyphonic Wizard" that will allow you to download any midi file on your computer directly to your phone via the cellular network. The trial version only allows you to download smaller sized files while the purchased version ($19.95?) allows you to download larger files as well as pictures. I've been using the trial version as I don't need a large file ringtone; I try to answer the phone right away.
For the download go to:
http://www.polyphonicwizard.com/download.html?platform=Windows
I have no financial interest in this program.

Funny idea but, how can I make sure my cell phone will not send code faster than 5wpm? Else I could not "read" what my cell phone tries to tell me, and no calls would be answered. Terrible state of affairs, lots of missed calls that is!
Would Morse code ringtones come with background noise, as in a real HF band, or would they be pure tones, unlike anything ever found in reality? No QRM/QRN? Would that be fun at all?
Do I need a narrow filter to be able to use CW ring tones in my cell phone? Are these filters available from major manufacturers?
Do I have to test the frequency stability performance of my cell phone? I ask because I am planning to use a really narrow digital filter (50 Hz bandwidth) and if the bloody cell phone starts drifting, I may miss plenty calls.
Why stopping at ring tones? Why not building a cellular phone that encodes all incoming audio messages (5 wpm, nothing faster please)? This way, I can always be using CW rather than using this obnoxious audio communications device called the human voice?
How about a cell phone with a built-in Morse key so I can respond using CW, and a decoder so that non-hams can understand my responses? Please, cell phone manufacturers--the decoder should have a nice, natural voice, not the metallic/robotic kind that industry nerds seem to prefer.
Not that I am a nerd, I have proof that I am not (mom told me so, of course) but "nice, natural voice" means something like Captain Kirk's in Star Trek.
Hmmm, I better get back to CW at 5 wpm. This much typing is already numbing my ears.

In reference to NA4IT and Nextel: My wish? I wish I had a ham radio that worked like my Nextel! That would be awesome. Maybe someday. I still love talking around the world on HF, and communicating on VHF/UHF, but there is nothing like the coolness of my Nextel when I need to talk to family and friends in a pinch! Us hams need to catch up with the times are start getting the digital voice stuff up and running! There is no reason why we can't do it.

Now I have figured out that I can associate an MP3 file with each phone number stored in my phone. Now when someone calls me, the phone sends, for example, "k4ia k4ia de home home pse k."
When my phone rings, everyone says, "Wow, is that morse code? Can you really tell what it is saying that fast?" To which I reply, "Well, golly gosh I am a know code ham."
