National HRO-500 Receiver & Matching Speaker - Sold!

National HRO-500 Communications Receiver
with Matching Speaker for sale

The HRO-500 (Serial #75-1354, circa 1964)
is in very good condition, and includes a
matching speaker. The HRO-500
Communication Receiver was the first
complete solid-state receiver manufactured
by National (5 KHz – 30 MHz). It is a real
transition unit as it is built just like a vacuum
tube radio, except that transistor sockets
replace the tube sockets. It is all point-to-
point wiring and thus straightforward to get
at the components, and uses also the famous
National PW dial, found in older HROs.

For this who are already familiar with the
famous HRO-500, words are not required to
explain the unique features, history, and
vintage radio collectors interest/value in this
receiver. For those unfamiliar with the HRO-
500, here’s a good website for additional
information:

tm

Exterior: Extremely nice condition cabinet,
clean white front panel & markings, perfect
rotary drum, clean knobs, and perfect
condition S-Meter (often tough to find on
these rigs). No scratches, dings, or other
surface faults of note.

Interior: Very clean top & bottom (some small
markings by prior owner around the
transistor sockets for easier identification).

Mechanical: Tunes extremely smoothly with
the famous HRO style tuning knob. Knobs all
function and operate smoothly. S-meter
operationally smooth. Band switch dial cord
replaced recently with replacement (ties two
internal rotary shafts).

Electrical: Very nice condition. No homebrew
modifications. Note: nearly all “black beauty”
electrolytic capacitors have been replaced
with new modern caps (highly recommended
for restoring & maintaining these rigs), done
in 2002.

Operational: Synthesizer “Locks On” solid on
most of the sixty 500khz band segments.
Reception is sensitive, selective, and with
good audio. Illuminating lights all functional.
Internal tuning & adjustments would be
recommended since it has not been adjusted
in about 10 years (all bands “locked on” at
that time, so some adjustments appear to
have drifted with time).

Note: the speaker cabinet matches the style &
paint scheme of the HRO-500; however the
grill style doesn’t appear to exactly match
some of the pictures on the web of the HRO-
500-TS speaker (it is labeled “National”).

Also included is the original manual (which
includes sections on Installation, Operations,
Theory of Operation, and Test & Alignment,
Specifications, and Parts List). Two fold-out
schematics are also included as part of the
manual. Also provided are various
compatible transistors that I acquired for
maintaining the receiver (spares).

Price is $1595 firm, plus packing, shipping
(UPS) & insurance. Payment via PayPal
preferred for immediate shipment or pickup;
other payment methods negotiable but will
require confirmed bank deposit prior to
shipment of item.

Additional pictures available upon request via
email. Please contact me for additional
information and further details about the
radio. Serious inquires only please. Thank
you.
