Test Equipment

HP® 8640B -» $ 229 + UPS Shipping

**SOLD** **SOLD** I have a working Hewlett Packard® Model 8640B Signal Generator that incorporates a mechanically tuned high-Q cavity oscillator. The Signal Generator covers the frequency range of 500 kHz to 512 MHz with published stability of better than 10ppm/10 min. and exceptionally low noise characteristics. This equipment is serial number 2007A13990 with Option 003 which provides reverse power protection; a feature that is invaluable when performing testing on Transceivers. This unit is not mechanically pretty since it is slightly mechanically damaged even though the unit is quite functional electrically. This instrument is used but I have verified that it produces a clean RF output all the way up to 550 MHz and responds to front panel frequency, level and modulation controls (see pictures). I believe all frequency display digits are operational. The unit is quite usable and it provides good, spectrally pure, RF carrier and modulated waveforms. This unit is in fair physical condition for its age but has several areas that are broken such as near the meter selection faceplate and several broken knobs and left handle but the unit is still functional and produces usable output. The AM switch is broken but AM can be produced by simply advancing the level control. It would require some repair to bring it to an excellent condition. In addition, the unit can also be used as an accurate counter, via the front panel frequency counter BNC input and associated display controls and a signal modulator and an input signal level meter. The following are some features of the unit. I donít guarantee calibration but I have checked them and they are close to listed.
1. Output Amplitude - The output capability of the 8640B is up to +19 dBm (~ 2 Volts RMS). You can set output level with a front panel 10 dB step attenuator and an 18 dB vernier attenuator.
2. Modulation - The 8640B provides settable amplitude modulation percentage and frequency modulation deviation.
3. Frequency Counter - The 8640B is capable of measuring input frequencies up to 550 MHz Depending on switch settings, the resolution is 100 Hz for a 500 MHz signal and 0.1 Hz for a 500 kHz input. I have checked this function via an external frequency generator and found it to be a functional counter up to 600 MHz.
4. Meter - The meter on the generator is capable of reading output power in dBm and volts. It also reads amplitude modulation percentage and frequency modulation peak deviation. Typical accuracy of this meter is ±3 percent.

This unit would make an excellent addition to any Ham Radio Shack that needs a functional unit but doesnít require a cosmetically pretty one.

The unit weighs about 38 pounds so shipping will be based on a boxed weight of about 45 pounds. Shipping charges will be my actual cost. Email me for an estimate of the shipping charges. The unit is vintage test equipment so cannot be guaranteed but will be checked again just prior to packaging for shipment. There are no returns or refunds with this unit. If you have any questions, just ask. No international sales: available to continental USA only. Unit is also on eBay, so which ever sells first gets this gem. I have plenty of pictures of the unit I can send via email. Just Ask.
