Does anyone use the Icom IC-7400 (IC-746 Pro) on 2m SSB and CW? How does it perform? Is the receiver good enough for DXing without a preamp? How does it stand up to strong signals in a contest? I'm not really too bothered by its HF performance.

Thanks.

Paul, G4IJE.

I have owned TWO ICOM 746 PRO rigs & I have worked all over North America,Cuba,& Puerto Rico & I never ran an external preamp.Great rig but I wanted my ICOM 7600 even more so I sold my last 746 PRO & now I use an ICOM 275A in it's place on 2 meter SSB.I WON 1st Place in the September 2003 North Florida Section ARRL VHF Low Power with my 1st 746 PRO.It's a great transceiver.I WON under my former call sign KE4KVW just FYI in case you looked it up. {:>)

Many thanks for that Clayton. It sounds like I wouldn't be disappointed with the IC-746 PRO (they called it the IC-7400 in EU). Such a shame Icom dropped 2 metres from the later models. An IC-7300 with 2 metres would be my dream rig!

Thanks again and 73, Paul G4IJE.

Well I am a Die Hard ICOM Man but NOT a fan of the 7300 due to the touch screen.I have the 7600 & find it much more to my liking.I would never own a touch screen rig at any price since they don't do anything for me.You would very much enjoy the 746 PRO I have no doubts because it's a great 100 watt on all of those bands rig with a great receiver.  Grin
